The Transparent Body - Jose Van Van Dijck - Bog - University of Washington Press - Plusbog.dk

From the potent properties of X rays evoked in Thomas Mann''s Magic Mountain to the miniaturized surgical team of the classic science fiction film Fantastic Voyage, the possibility of peering into the inner reaches of the body has engaged the twentieth-century popular and scientific imagination. Drawing on examples that are international in scope, The Transparent Body examines the dissemination of medical images to a popular audience, advancing the argument that medical imaging technologies are the material embodiment of collective desires and fantasies--the most pervasive of which is the ideal of transparency itself. The Transparent Body traces the cultural context and wider social impact of such medical imaging practices as X ray and endoscopy, ultrasound imaging of fetuses, the filming and broadcasting of surgical operations, the creation of plastinated corpses for display as art objects, and the use of digitized cadavers in anatomical study. In the early twenty-first century, the interior of the body has become a pervasive cultural presence - as accessible to the public eye as to the physician''s gaze. Jose van Dijck explores the multifaceted interactions between medical images and cultural ideologies that have brought about this situation. The Transparent Body unfolds the complexities involved in medical images and their making, illuminating their uses and meanings both within and outside of medicine. Van Dijck demonstrates the ways in which the ability to render the inner regions of the human body visible - and the proliferation of images of the body''s interior in popular media - affect our view of corporeality and our understanding of health and disease. Written in an engaging style that brings thought-provoking cultural intersections vividly to life, The Transparent Body will be of special interest to those in media studies, cultural studies, science and technology studies, medical humanities, and the history of medicine.

Enhancing Scientific Reproducibility in Biomedical Research Through Transparent Reporting - Health And Medicine Division - Bog - National Academies

Sharing knowledge is what drives scientific progress - each new advance or innovation in biomedical research builds on previous observations. However, for experimental findings to be broadly accepted as credible by the scientific community, they must be verified by other researchers. An essential step is for researchers to report their findings in a manner that is understandable to others in the scientific community and provide sufficient information for others to validate the original results and build on them. In recent years, concern has been growing over a number of studies that have failed to replicate previous results and evidence from larger meta-analyses, which have pointed to the lack of reproducibility in biomedical research. On September 25 and 26, 2019, the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine hosted a public workshop in Washington, DC, to discuss the current state of transparency in the reporting of preclinical biomedical research and to explore opportunities for harmonizing reporting guidelines across journals and funding agencies. Convened jointly by the Forum on Drug Discovery, Development, and Translation; the Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders; the National Cancer Policy Forum; and the Roundtable on Genomics and Precision Health, the workshop primarily focused on transparent reporting in preclinical research, but also considered lessons learned and best practices from clinical research reporting. This publication summarizes the presentation and discussion of the workshop. Transparent Design in Higher Education Teaching and Leadership - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

This book offers a comprehensive guide to the Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT) framework that has convincingly demonstrated that implementation increases retention and improved outcomes for all students. Its premise is simple: to make learning processes explicit and equitably accessible for all students. Transparent instruction involves faculty/student discussion about several important aspects of academic work before students undertake that work, making explicit the purpose of the work, the knowledge that will be gained and its utility in students’ lives beyond college; explaining the tasks involved, the expected criteria, and providing multiple examples of real-world work applications of the specific academic discipline. The simple change of making objective and methods explicit – that faculty recognize as consistent with their teaching goals – creates substantial benefits for students and demonstrably increases such predictors of college students’ success as academic confidence, sense of belonging in college, self-awareness of skill development, and persistence. This guide presents a brief history of TILT, summarizes both past and current research on its impact on learning, and describes the three-part Transparency Framework (of purposes, tasks and criteria). The three sections of the book in turn demonstrate why and how transparent instruction works suggesting strategies for instructors who wish to adopt it; describing how educational developers and teaching centers have adopted the Framework; and concluding with examples of how several institutions have used the Framework to connect the daily work of faculty with the learning goals that departments, programs and institutions aim to demonstrate.

The Transparent Sales Leader - Todd Caponi - Bog - Ideapress Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The Transparent Sales Leader - Todd Caponi - Bog - Ideapress Publishing - Plusbog.dk

It’s the age-old issue facing sales organizations. Sales training and enablement is focused on the sales team, not the leaders. The prevailing thought is if you have graduated to sales leadership, you must already know what you’re doing, otherwise you wouldn’t have been promoted into the role. For most sales leaders, their approach is borne from experiences working for and around other sales leaders. No formal training. No framework. Limited understanding of how individual salespeople are inspired to stay, do their best, and advocate to others. Hitting a revenue target is not the job, it’s the outcome . The inspiration of your team is only “coin operated” if you’re doing it wrong. But there’s good news! Sales leadership doesn’t have to be that hard. There’s a massive opportunity to stand out from the rest; to be more prepared, more effective and to maximize the revenue capacity of your teams. And in today’s environment, where the physical and emotional cost of changing sales jobs is practically non-existent, the ability to recruit, retain and optimize has never been more important. The Transparent Sales Leader challenges long-held sales leadership standards, providing a modern, cards-face-up, science-backed, easy-to-implement framework for today’s sales leaders. Todd Caponi, author of The Transparency Sale , brings the science of transparency and intrinsic inspiration to the pages of this book, in a simple-to-understand-and-implement structure to help you get the job, plan, strategize and communicate to your team, your bosses, and even your board. In the end, you’ll see the holes before they form. You’ll stop chasing, and start growing.

Greenhouse Stories - A Critical Re-examination of Transparent Microcosms - Olivier Lacrouts - Bog - Onomatopee - Plusbog.dk

Architecturally speaking, the term ‘greenhouse’ refers to buildings designed to optimally protect, cultivate and propagate plants under conditions that artificially reproduce their environments of origin. Employed successfully over centuries, these transparent microcosms have allowed some nations to improve their scientific knowledge, provide botanical education and develop horticultural innovations. Parallel to the benefits they brought with them, greenhouses have also had – and still have – harmful consequences on the way we relate to others, both humans and other-than-humans, and the environments we co-inhabit with them. Shifting away from the celebration of greenhouses as technical mastery and exceptional architectural feats, Greenhouse Stories is an invitation to critically look at greenhouses as controversial (agri)cultural production tools. Re-examining them from a social, historical, environmental and creative perspective, the essays and interviews featured in this book highlight stories of vegetal displacement, colonial appropriation and pollution. Yet they also help us to understand that greenhouses can be fertile spaces for women''s empowerment and the nurturing of socially-engaged and eco-conscious projects. At a time of great anthropocentric pressure on the planet, we believe that questioning the greenhouse as a symbol and a tool can help us re-establish more humble and meaningful connections with the Earth and its living communities.
