Threatened Landscapes - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Few, if any, environments are free of human intervention. Often this generates ecosystems which are rich in biodiversity, historical interest, recreational opportunity and scenic beauty just as worthy of conservation as the more natural ecosystems on which protection programmes have been almost exclusively focussed. These ''cultural landscapes'', ranging from the farm and forest lands of Europe and Eastern North America, through to the pasture lands and savannas of the Middle East and Africa to the paddylands of the Pacific Rim, are usually the product of relatively low-level, sustainable exploitation of the environment over long periods of time. Many have survived for centuries, if not millennia, but now urban expansion, depopulation of rural areas and, most damagingly, the intensification of agricultural and sylvicultural practices, are everywhere leading to a loss of their cherished biodiversity and amenity. Whilst past changes have mostly added to the valued characteristics of these landscapes, modern farming and forestry are creating sterile monocultures on the better land whilst marginal lands are being abandoned. This book documents these changes, illustrates them through detailed case studies of a representative selection of threatened landscapes, analyses their underlying causes and explores ways by which they can continue to be maintained, or new landscapes created which maintain their desired characteristics.

Secularization in the Long 1960s - Clive D. Field - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Secularization in the Long 1960s - Clive D. Field - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Secularization in the Long 1960s: Numerating Religion in Britain provides a major empirical contribution to the literature of secularization. It moves beyond the now largely sterile and theoretical debates about the validity of the secularization thesis or paradigm. Combining historical and social scientific perspectives, Clive D. Field uses a wide range of quantitative sources to probe the extent and pace of religious change in Britain during the long 1960s. In most cases, data is presented for the years 1955-80, with particular attention to the methodological and other challenges posed by each source type.Following an introductory chapter, which reviews the historiography, introduces the sources, and defines the chronological and other parameters, Field provides evidence for all major facets of religious belonging, behaving, and believing, as well as for institutional church measures. The work engages with, and largely refutes, Callum G. Brown''s influential assertion that Britain experienced ''revolutionary'' secularization in the 1960s, which was highly gendered in nature, and with 1963 the major tipping-point. Instead, a more nuanced picture emerges with some religious indicators in crisis, others continuing on an existing downward trajectory, and yet others remaining stable. Building on previous research by the author and other scholars, and rejecting recent proponents of counter-secularization, the long 1960s are ultimately located within the context of a longstanding gradualist, and still ongoing, process of secularization in Britain.

The Waltzing Body in Victorian Literature - Sabrina Gilchrist Hadyk - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

The Waltzing Body in Victorian Literature - Sabrina Gilchrist Hadyk - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

The Waltzing Body in Victorian Literature: Narratives of Sexuality and Power traces the evolution of the waltz from a taboo dance in the early nineteenth century to a gracefully nostalgic practice that must be preserved by the century''s end. While Sabrina Gilchrist Hadyk references eighteenth-century authors to frame the waltz''s initial reception in England, the study focuses primarily on Victorian authors who shaped how and why this dance was paradoxically viewed as elegant, effeminate, and sterile. Hadyk explores female sexuality and the concept of choice in the ballroom; a shifting and sometimes contradictory understanding of masculinity through male performance; the erasure of and reclamation of queer desire in heterosexual courting spaces; and the rhetoric of new technologies that attempted to contain, shape, and memorialize a temporal art form. A brief epilogue considers how late-Victorian (and heavily sanitized and romanticized) depictions of the waltz reverberate today in popular films and reality TV, which perpetuate Victorian assumptions about class, gender, sexuality, and more. By understanding the history of the waltz, the reader is invited to examine the dizzying discomfort that many Victorians expressed about forging ahead into a modern (and modernizing) world, particularly at the turn of the century. With comparatively little scholarship around understanding dance scenes and dance semiotics in literature, this book articulates a new interpretive path for familiar and unfamiliar nineteenth-century narratives, offering new ways of understanding and engaging with the role and culture of dance.

Complications in Knee and Shoulder Surgery - - Bog - Springer London Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Complications in Knee and Shoulder Surgery - - Bog - Springer London Ltd - Plusbog.dk

“To Err is Human…” Alexander Pope Any surgical intervention has potential risks and complications. This book is designed as a reference tool and a roadmap for the sports medicine orthopedist to minimize the complications in knee and shoulder surgery. Some complications are avoidable; some are not. By understanding the functional anatomy at risk, proper surgical setup, proper equipment, and proper patient selection, a preventative approach to complications can be instituted. The authors of these chapters represent leaders in orthopedic sports medicine and have provided novel methods for dealing with intraoperative complications and si- ations that can occur in the midst of a “routine” arthroscopic reconstruction. In d- cussing these issues, we hope to raise the surgeon’s awareness of potential complications and to provide wisdom and advice to properly avoid and treat these problems should they arise. How one deals with complications truly tests the mettle of the surgeon. Keeping one’s “cool” in the midst of an intraoperative complication will be facilitated by h- ing an algorithmic approach. We hope that this book will improve your outcome should these problems occur. Some complications are unavoidable. Arthro brosis or stiffness may take place in the best of hands. Infection may surface postoperatively in the most sterile OR. We provide you with the background to confront these challenges. A list of ten “Pearls” are offered at the beginning of most chapters as a quick reference card.
