The nouveau roman and Writing in Britain After Modernism - Adam (departmental Lecturer In English Guy - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

The nouveau roman and Writing in Britain After Modernism - Adam (departmental Lecturer In English Guy - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

The nouveau roman and Writing in Britain After Modernism recovers a neglected literary history. In the late 1950s, news began to arrive in Britain of a group of French writers who were remaking the form of the novel. In the work of Michel Butor, Marguerite Duras, Robert Pinget, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Nathalie Sarraute, and Claude Simon, the hallmarks of novelistic writing--discernible characters, psychological depth, linear chronology--were discarded in favour of other aesthetic horizons. Transposed to Britain''s highly polarized literary culture, the nouveau roman became a focal point for debates about the novel. For some, the nouveau roman represented an aberration, and a pernicious turn against the humanistic values that the novel embodied. For others, it provided a route out of the stultifying conventionality and conformism that had taken root in British letters. On both sides, one question persisted: given the innovations of interwar modernism, to what extent was the nouveau roman actually new? This book begins by drawing on publishers'' archives and hitherto undocumented sources from a wide range of periodicals to show how the nouveau roman was mediated to the British public. Of central importance here is the publisher Calder & Boyars, and its belief that the nouveau roman could be enjoyed by a mass public. The book then moves onto literary responses in Britain to the nouveau roman, focusing on questions of translation, realism, the end of empire, and the writing of the project. From the translations of Maria Jolas, through to the hostile responses of the circle around C. P. Snow, and onto the literary debts expressed in novels by Brian W. Aldiss, Christine Brooke-Rose, Eva Figes, B. S. Johnson, Alan Sheridan, Muriel Spark, and Denis Williams, the nouveau roman is shown to be a central concern in the postwar British literary field.

French Art Nouveau Ceramics - Paul Arthur - Bog - Editions Norma - Plusbog.dk

French Art Nouveau Ceramics - Paul Arthur - Bog - Editions Norma - Plusbog.dk

This book is a unique and comprehensive illustrated dictionary of French Art Nouveau Ceramics.A census conducted in 1901 indicated the existence of some 209 producers of pottery in France, employing a total of around 5,800 full-time labourers. This great activity stimulated a parallel development in the arts, including the search for new expressions in art pottery, giving birth to l''art nouveau, a great and eclectic synthesis of a number of other art styles. Largely through British arts and crafts, and the work of artists like the Manxman Archibald Knox, it reached far back into the prehistory of Celtic art. To this were added later medieval elements, through the gothic revival championed by William Morris. The need for renewal, breaking away from the neo-Classical and academia, which was the realm of the upper-class culture, was largely theorised by John Ruskin, who searched elsewhere for inspiration. Thus did British art nouveau also partake of Chinese and Japanese styles, though never in so forceful a manner as did the French aesthetic. France, on the one side, looked back to the swirling and frivolous eighteenth century Rococo, primarily through the influence of the Goncourt brothers, Edmond and Jules, influential aesthetes of the mid-nineteenth century. The book focuses especially on artists working stoneware or grès, faience, and terracotta. It aims to provide a general survey of the many artists working in these areas, and includes brief accounts of the ceramics work of sculptors and painters whose wider output is already well known.

Pascal Paoli a Maria Cosway - - Bog - Liverpool University Press - Plusbog.dk

Pascal Paoli a Maria Cosway - - Bog - Liverpool University Press - Plusbog.dk

The Observations of Gilles le Bouvier - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

The Observations of Gilles le Bouvier - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Translated from the medieval French, this book is a landmark English-language version of the work of Gilles le Bouvier. As the senior herald to King Charles VII, the monarch on the French throne as they advanced to victory in the Hundred Years’ War between England, France and their allies, Gilles le Bouvier was close to the king during a decisive, formative period in France’s history, as well as being a well-known figure from the period. The Observations of Gilles le Bouvier thus delivers a rare glimpse of a singular medieval worldview, offered through the constrained voice of a skilled diplomat carefully and occasionally sharing his opinions to audiences composed of his social superiors.During his lifelong career as a messenger and a diplomat in Charles’s service, Gilles le Bouvier, known as The Berry Herald, travelled far and wide on his master’s behalf. This translated work is a compilation of his observations as he moved around Western Europe, the Mediterranean states and the Black Sea region. Throughout the text, Gilles le Bouvier:* assessed or commented on the lands encompassed by his extensive travels* discussed the peoples he claimed to have encountered, from the honourable Turks to the ‘bad Catholics’ of southern Italy* surveyed the military capabilities of France’s neighbours, allies, enemies and neutral statesExpertly introduced and contextualised by Gideon Brough and Sophie Patrick, this book provides a compelling and unique historical source for understanding life in late-medieval Europe through the eyes of someone who lived it.
