Falling in Love with Nature - Amanda J. Baugh - Bog - New York University Press - Plusbog.dk

Explores the contours of Latinx Catholic environmentalism Home-based conservationist measures such as cultivating backyard gardens, avoiding consumerism, and limiting waste are widespread among Spanish-speaking Catholics across the United States. Yet these home-based conservationist practices are seldom recognized as "environmental" because they are enacted by working-class immigrant communities and do not conform to the expectations of mainstream environmentalism. In Falling in Love with Nature, Amanda J. Baugh tells the story of American environmentalism through a focus on Spanish-speaking Catholics, shedding light on environmental actors who have been hidden in plain sight. While dominant narratives about environmental activism include minorities, primarily in the realm of environmental racism and injustice, Baugh demonstrates that minority communities are not merely victims of environmental problems. They can be active agents who express love for nature based on inherited family traditions and close relationships with the land. Baugh shows that Spanish-speaking Catholics have values that have been overlooked in global discourses, grassroots movements, and the highest echelons of the US Catholic Church. By drawing attention to the environmental knowledge that is already abundant within Spanish-speaking Catholic communities, Falling in Love with Nature challenges readers to rethink their assumptions about who can be an environmental leader and what counts as environmentalism.

Love in India - Henrike Donner - Bog - Anthem Press - Plusbog.dk

This book provides a comprehensive perspective on discourses of love in contemporary India. It focuses on the multiple sites and articulations through which “love” is constructed, articulated and experienced in India. Overwhelmingly, scholarship on love, especially in India, situates and analyses it in the context of marriage, family and beyond. It reviews those frameworks but goes beyond them by drawing attention to a range of sites, analytical prisms and everyday experiences of love, including the impact of consumer society, technologies and notions of citizenship and the nation at large. The book comprises seven chapters based on ethnographies to provide a wide-ranging account of the multiplicity of discursive formations and contexts, withing which love plays a crucial role in the everyday lives of contemporary Indians from a wide range of backgrounds. The introduction presents an overview of the literatures on Love and Marriage in South Asia and the current debates in popular media that are relevant to them.Chapter 2 discusses the extensive literatures on love and marriage in South Asia with special attention to the way these debates are today revised in the light of youth cultures, love outside marriage and a broader debate on sexualities, including the literatures on LGBTQ identities in India.Chapter 3 provides an insight into those meanings of love that are often not immediately associated with notions of individual will. As such, this chapter discusses those interpretations of love that are embedded in family structures, roles and responsibilities, religion and culture.Chapter 4 presents an analysis of how love constitutes gender and gender shapes experiences and expectations of love; in this chapter, the focus will be to unpack constructions of ‘appropriate’ masculinities and femininities for an urban and modern India.Chapter 5 traces how the political economy, as it were, of love, with special attention to its practices of consumption and circulation.Chapter 6 addresses how debates on love are re-situated within the notion of the new India, gendered ideas about modern self-hood, the revision of the link between love and marriage, divorce and cohabitation, and the complex relationship between notions of ‘modern’ and globalized forms of intimacies and nationhood as based on South Asian exceptionalism, heteronormative sexuality within marriage and discourses on communal family-making, tradition and moralities.Chapter 7 brings together all major themes discussed in the book, and contextualizes contemporary public discourse on love in India, to the main arguments of the book.

Shyness & Love - Brian G. Gilmartin - Bog - University Press of America - Plusbog.dk

Shyness & Love - Brian G. Gilmartin - Bog - University Press of America - Plusbog.dk

Shyness & Love covers the only major study conducted to date on social anxiety disorder as it is manifested in informal, unstructured, male/female dating and courtship situations. It focuses on the causes—both biomedical as well as situational—of “love-shyness” and the consequences for those afflicted with it. Gilmartin also discusses promising treatment modalities and what schools and communities can do to prevent severe love-shyness from developing in the first place. Shyness & Love examines the early family life as well as the peer group interactions of love-shy men. The book provides many statistical comparisons between the sampled love-shys and a comparison group of non-love-shy males of normal (but not superior) social self-confidence levels. These statistical comparisons allow for some informed speculations regarding the numerous interacting causes that underlie social phobia in informal, unstructured, heterosexual social situations. These statistical comparisons also provide the reader with some powerful suggestions regarding ways the American social structure (e.g., schools, family life, and communities) might be rearranged so that severe and intractable forms of love-shyness would never have an opportunity to develop in growing boys and teenagers in the first place. Since the publication of the first edition of this book, it has been determined that as many as forty percent of men afflicted with love-shyness are simultaneously comorbid for Asperger’s Syndrome, also known as high-functioning autism. As many as half of all love-shy males are comorbid for the “male lesbian syndrome,” sometimes also referred to as the “passive, non-competitive male syndrome.” This second edition contains a new foreword that presents the latest findings in love-shyness research. It is more concise than the original Shyness & Love, yet retains the most significant chapters.
