Schoolishness is not a pedagogical how-to book, but a theory-based phenomenology of institutional education. It has moral, psychological, and educational arguments against schoolishness that, as Blum notes, "rhymes with foolishness."

The main aim of this book is to salvage the historical category of Gnosticism from its present scholarly disavowal, if only because Gnosticism, when read as a cultural, and not only a religious phenomenon, presents us an ancient form of culture criticism which would be hard to parallel until (post) modernity. While Hans Jonas remarked many years ago that “something in Gnosticism knocks at the door of our Being and of our twentieth-century Being in particular,” by the 21st century global world this something has already entered and lives with us. We can thus still benefit from another perspective, even if it comes from Mediterranean people who lived almost 2,000 years ago.

But the author shows that it ceases to be true if we explore the significance of the universal ground in which all religious awareness and every social order is rooted. Using intensive interviews in Great Britain and the United States over a number of years, the author gives empirical evidence that the ethical impulse is not absent but is thwarted by the absence of bridges between the socio-economic sphere of life and people’s ethical awareness. Decisive in this connection is the confusion between what is universal and what is historically specific. This confusion, the author believes, underlies the apathy, the sense of powerlessness, the prevalence of a false consciousness, the decline of traditional religious forms. It is, he concludes, the core of the ethical corrosion of our time.

Specifically, it explores the quantitative partitioning (i.e., source-sink relationships) of benzoic and cinnamic acids in cucumber seedling-solution and cucumber seedling-microbe-soil-sand systems and how that partitioning may influence phenolic acid effects on cucumber seedlings. Regressions, correlations and conceptual and hypothetical models are used to achieve these objectives. Cucumber seedlings are used as a surrogate for phenolic acid sensitive herbaceous dicotyledonous weed seedlings. This volume was written specifically for researchers and their students interested in understanding how a range of simple phenolic acids and potentially other putative allelopathic compounds released from living plants and their litter and residues may modify soil chemistry, soil and rhizosphere microbial biology, seedling physiology and seedling growth. In addition, this volume describes the potential relationships, where they may exist, for direct transfer of organic compounds between plants, plant communication and plant-plant allelopathic interactions and addresses the following questions: Can physicochemical properties of phenolic acids be used as tools to help understand the complex behavior of phenolic acids and the ultimate effects of phenolic acids on sensitive seedlings? Every nation develops a narrative structure for thinking about history generated by its own historical experience. In this study, the German and Austrian German “historias”—the way the narratives of factual significance are structured as the “story” of the events—are shown in their sameness from the late 1600s to the present. Herodotus spoke of “historia” in our evidence of Western thought, by which he meant both “inquiry” and “story.” The “story” of how the one and the many in the society become differs in each national culture. While the interpretations of historical reality among historical thinkers in each period of modernism may differ within a national culture of a time, the narrative structure is shared by each thinker of that society, learned in their public and self-education within the society’s normative template. This “historia” shapes the emphases of how meaning is articulated among the historians of a society—in this book, Germany and Austria—regardless of their guiding ideas. The author argues that these societies can become more open to what has occurred in the historical thought that guides them if they see the constriction and oversights generated by the narrative style of their traditional historia.
