Prunus Subhirtella Autumnalis Rosea. Rosebud Cherry Buy UK

Prunus Subhirtella Autumnalis Rosea. Rosebud Cherry Buy UK

Prunus Subhirtella Autumnalis Rosea or Rosebud Cherry AutumnalisThe Prunus Subhirtella Autumnalis Rosea, also called the Rosebud Cherry Autumnalis, adds a touch of elegance to any garden or landscape. The tree has the unique distinction of flowering from autumn to spring when most trees are dormant. From October to February the tree sports a bevy of virtually non-stop dark pink buds that open into pastel pink flowers. Many people refer to the Prunus Subhirtella Autumnalis Rosea as the autumn-winter flowering cherry tree because of its distinctive autumn to spring flower habits. The slender tree begins to sprout foliage in the early spring months. The leaves first appear bronze in colour and eventually turn bright green throughout the summer months. In the autumn the foliage turns a bright yellow before falling from the tree. After the tree sheds its leaves, the smooth, chocolate coloured bark becomes visible and offers its own distinctively striking beauty to the landscape before the emergence of the tree’s first autumn flowers.During the late summer months, the tree produces a large crop of pea-sized black fruit that attract songbirds to the garden. The fruits also add eye-catching visual contrast to the tree. When fully grown, the Prunus Subhirtella Autumnalis Rosea reaches a height of 7m.  It sports a rounded growth habit. However, its slender branches and twigs makes it an ideal garden tree or border tree because it does not produce an abundance of shade. The tree’s ability to let filtered sunlight reach the ground beneath it means that many plant varieties can be planted around the tree and still receive adequate sunlight to flourish. The Prunus Subhirtella Autumnalis Rosea was first introduced to Europe at the turn of the 20th century. The lovely ornamental tree has been awarded the distinguished RHS Award of Garden Merit and also an Award of Merit for displays of its cut flowers. For best results, plant the Prunus Subhirtella Autumnalis Rosea in well-drained soil in full sunlight. It enjoys evenly moist soil that is high in organic content. The tree has no specific preference for alkaline or acidic soil conditions. It tolerates both summer heat and winter cold well. If pruning is desired to shape the tree or remove dead branches, it should be done during the mid-summer to give the tree ample time to recover before winter. The Prunus Subhirtella Autumnalis Rosea is a valued addition to any garden. Its striking year round beauty makes it a focal point that is to be admired no matter what the season.

Acer Platanoides Norway Maple Multi Stem Trees Root Balled

Acer Platanoides Norway Maple Multi Stem Trees Root Balled

Acer Platanoides, which is commonly known as the Norway Maple, is a large and fast-growing deciduous tree with striking autumnal foliage. Norway Maple’s five-lobed foliage emerges bright green in spring and turns a deeper shade over the summer months. It is a stunning autumnal tree when the leaves turn bright yellow and orange with hints of red. Because the leaves are so large, measuring 20 cm, the colours are particularly noticeable. It also holds the RHS Perfect for Pollinators title for its attractive sweet-smelling clusters of small yellow flowers that adorn its bare branches in racemes before leaf growth. During the winter months this deciduous tree holds a pleasing architectural shape that gives height to a low-growing garden. There are many varieties of Norway Maple, such as Acer Platanoides Crimson Sentry with its disctinctive red leaves throughout the growing season and Norway Maple Drummondii with variegated summer foliage. However this regular variety is a multi stem Norway Maple with golden autumnal foliage. This means it has been shaped to grow on several stems rather than one thick leader trunk. By contrast, the Crimson Sentry trees have a single clear stem full standard shape. How Hardy Is Acer PlatanoidesAcer Platanoides is native to Europe, so it is able to withstand the coldest European winters. It is frost hardy, drought hardy, and once established can tolerate temporary flooding. It is a good choice to plant near paving and is very popular for street scenes. How To Use Acer PlatanoidesOver the course of 20 -50 years this handsome tree can grow higher than 12 metres in height and eight metres in spread.  The multi stem shape is beautiful and perfect as a specimen tree for the lawn where it will provide shade in the summer months followed by spectacular autumnal colours. You can grow woodland plants beneath its canopy such as hellebores and ferns.  Norway Maple is wind-resistant, and makes an excellent windbreak in breezy gardens. It also deals well with pollution, so if you live near a busy road this is a good choice.  Children universally love Maple for its autumn colours and winged fruit, better known as helicopter seeds, which measure 3.5 – 4.5 cm long. How To Care For Acer PlatanoidesA Multi Stem Norway Maple will tolerate all soil types of any pH, and is a particularly good choice for chalky soils. It needs plenty of space, so it’s best to keep it away from walls with enough room to spread. Water Acer Platanoides regularly in the first few years as it becomes established and puts down roots. There is no need to prune this glorious tree as it maintains its own pleasing shape. If you are looking for a low maintenance architectural tree with vivid autumnal colours and plenty of shade in the summer the Norway Maple is a beautiful and practical choice. This multi-stem Norway Maple comes root-balled ready for immediate planting. See also Acer Platanoides Drummondii which is a variegated variety.

Aesculus Hippocastanum Horse Chestnut Tree Multi Stemmed

Aesculus Hippocastanum Horse Chestnut Tree Multi Stemmed

Aesculus Hippocastanum Horse Chestnut TreeAesculus Hippocastanum, more commonly known as Common Horse Chestnut, is widely recognised as the conker tree. It is native to the Balkans, but has become well-established in the UK since its introduction in the late 16th century. The Horse Chestnut is named for the horse-shoe shaped scar its fallen leaves make on the twig. In turn this led to the belief that ground up conkers could relieve respiratory problems in horses. Smooth dark brown conkers are not the sole reason to choose this stunning deciduous tree because it also has beautiful spring flowers which are some of the most ornamental in late spring to early summer.  In May to June creamy-white flowers burst through in upright panicles with each individual flower containing up to five fringed petals that gradually mature into a pinky-red at the base. In September, if the flowers are pollinated, they develop into the green-spiked casings that contain its fruit – the legendary conker. Throughout the summer the Common Horse Chesnut has a broad canopy of large, easily recognisable palmate leaves that hang from a central stem. The leaves are grouped into five to seven fingered ‘palms’ which turn yellow-brown in autumn and begin to fall as the temperatures change. Autumnal leaf fall leaves behind a solid structural framework in winter.Height and Spread of Aesculus HippocastanumThis is a large tree and really only suitable for a large garden. It can reach heights of 30 metres and spread over eight metres. How Hardy Is Aesculus HippocastanumThis is a fully hardy tree in all of the UK, it can withstand sub zero temperatures, some drought and exposed locations. How To Use Aesculus HippocastanumThe Aesculus Hippocastanum needs plenty of room to grow, so it is best suited to large gardens as a specimen in the lawn. These specific trees have been trained as multi-stemmed with several upright branches rather than one main leader. This gives more a wild and natural appearance making it suitable for wildlife and informal gardens. In summer the dense foliage provides privacy and noise reduction, but it not suitable for under planting because the foliage unfurls early in the year and cuts out light. It goes without saying that the Horse Chestnut is a great tree for children who universally love collecting and playing with conkers that fall in late summer to autumn. How To Care For Aesculus HippocastanumLittle care is needed by this tough and beautiful tree, it happily tolerates all soils and does not require pruning, although you can remove the lower branches to let in light as it matures. Your Common Horse Chestnut will be delivered root-balled ready for immediate planting. New specimens will require water until they are established, and in early spring a thick layer of mulch around the base will boost its health and vitality. If you’re looking for an instantly recognisable low maintenance tree with beautiful flowers the Aesculus Hippocastanum is a great choice – it is one of the most floral and attractive trees and produces family-friendly conkers.

Acer Cappadocicum Rubrum. Red Cappadocian Maple. Blood Maple

Acer Cappadocicum RubrumThe Acer Cappadocicum Rubrum, also known as the Red Cappadocian Maple, or Blood Maple, has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit AGM for the interest it brings to the UK landscape with its three seasons of foliage colour. Native to Turkey, the Causcasus and as far east as China, the Red Cappadocian maple is named for its distinctive spring foliage. The large, 5-lobed leaves are a brilliant crimson when they emerge in the spring before turning a dark green in the summer. In the autumn they change to a deep golden shade. The leaves are not the only red thing about the Acer Cappadocicum Rubrum, as the young stems hold a red colour for the first few years, creating an attractive contrast with the green and yellow leaves. Reliably winter-hardy throughout the UK, the Acer Cappadocicum Rubrum will grow fairly quickly into a good-sized tree, but can take 20 to 50 years to reach its full height of 15 metres and spread of 10 metres. It will need little or no pruning to maintain the round shape of its dense crown.Carefully choose the planting location for your Red Cappadocian maple for best results. Musa Basjoo Banana Tree or Japanese banana plant. UK Hardy

Musa Basjoo Banana Tree or Japanese banana plant. UK Hardy

Musa Basjoo or Banana TreeMusa Basjoo is a hardy Japanese banana plant. It lends an exotic air of the tropics to UK gardens, but this herbaceous perennial has a degree of hardiness that makes it possible to survive the winter in milder parts of the UK. It has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Originally growing in Sichuan province of China before being introduced to the Ryukyu Islands south of Japan, Musa basjoo is noted for its rapid growth and large, spectacular leaves and unusual flowers. Its thick, paddle-shaped leaves, up to 60 cm across and more than 2 metres long, fan out from the stem in a fountain shape.  In summer it produces spikes of cream-coloured flowers, which hang downwards.  Throughout the summer it will grow in height, with new leaves unfurling almost every week. Given the right conditions and protection, the hardy Japanese banana plant can grow to 4 metres in height with a spread of 2.5 metres in 5 to 10 years. A container-grown Musa basjoo will be somewhat smaller because of the restrictions on the root system.Musa basjoo will survive outside in very mild parts of the UK without winter cover, but wherever there are freezing temperatures, it needs protection after the first autumn frost.  Build a cage out of chicken wire, or make a tube out of horticultural fleece, and stuff it with straw or leaves to insulate the plant from freezing temperatures. Mulch the ground heavily to protect the roots. Musa basjoo will grow back from the roots even if the stem is killed off in the winter, as it is root-hardy to -15C. Growing from the roots, the hardy Japanese banana plant can reach a height of 2 metres in one summer Musa basjoo needs to be carefully sited in your garden. Find a sheltered spot with a south-facing aspect, in full sun or dappled shade.  Plant in well-drained but moist sand, chalk or loam soil with a nitrogen-rich fertilize and plenty of humus. It prefers a slightly acidic ph. If it settles in happily, you will be able to remove suckers to plant elsewhere in the spring, or divide the clumps every five years. Cut the flowering spikes off after they finish blooming, as the Musa basjoo will die after setting fruit, and you will want to keep it as an ornamental plant for many years!Plant your hardy Japanese banana plant as a specimen plant in the middle of a lawn, where its dramatic, exotic appearance will create a stunning focal point. It is also an excellent candidate for container growing on a patio or in a courtyard, and can then be easily brought in to a greenhouse or conservatory for overwintering.  Musa basjoo will bring the jungle to your garden with its dramatic leaves, and is well worth the trouble that it will take to protect through a UK winter.

The insignificant flowers in May attract bees and butterflies, and are followed by winged fruits or samara up to 5 cm across in autumn, when the foliage turns to shades of red and orange for a brilliant show. The cultivar Annae has an open, spherical crown.Hardy in all parts of the UK, Acer Zoeschense Annae will slowly grow to a mature height of 20 metres and spread of 6-10 metres. Little or no pruning is required to maintain its rounded, airy crown. However, it can be happily pruned and trained into more or less any desired shape.Plant Acer Zoeschense Annae in full sun, partial shade, or shade in an exposed or sheltered position in any soil type. It will tolerate a wetter soil than many other trees, but will also tolerate periods of drought once established. Being very tolerant of pollution, it is a good choice for city gardens. It is also a good tree to use in windy locations as it has a high wind resistance.Acer Zoeschense Annae can be used on a large roof terrace, especially if pruned and trained to maintain the desired size and shape. It is also a good choice for a specimen tree in a lawn, where it will provide dappled shade in summer and then become a colourful focal point when its leaves turn red and orange in autumn. They make excellent medium-sized street trees. On a larger property, a row of Acer Zoeschense Annae can be used as a windbreak.Acer Zoeschense Annae is an excellent landscape tree for a wide variety of growing conditions. Not particular about light levels, soil type, or moisture, this low-maintenance tree will reward you with attractive foliage which ends the year with a brilliant show of autumn colour!

Ligustrum Japonicum Full Standard Tree. Evergreen Japanese Privet Standard Tree. Evergreen Screening Trees

Ligustrum Japonicum Full Standard Tree. Evergreen Japanese Privet Standard Tree. Evergreen Screening Trees

This is a Japanese Privet Tree (Latin Name: Ligustrum Japonicum) trained in a 'standard' tree shape - meaning it has a thick crown of foliage on a long clear stem. Ligustrum Japonicum is also known as Evergreen Privet or Wax Leafed Privet. Originating from Japan and Korea, this tall Ligustrum japonicum full standard tree has a thick covering of shiny, dark green leaves all year round, making it an excellent evergreen screening plant. The leaves are somewhat pear-shaped with a pointed end. They tend to measure 5 to 10 centimeters long and 2.5 to 5 centimeters wide. The top side of the leaf is darker than the underside and sports five or six raised veins that stand out in stark contrast to the rest of the leaf. Variegated varieties of the Ligustrum Japonicum sport lovely leaves that are a marbled mix of dark green and cream colours. Because of its tall elegant trunk, these mature evergreen trees work particularly well when used as stilted hedging for above the fence line screening. These Ligustrum Japonicum Full Standards have been shaped over time to have a crown of evergreen foliage above a clear straight stem of at least 190 cm from the pot to the base of the crown (depending on which you select). White flower panicles appear in the spring. Each panicle measures about 12 to 20 centimeters in length. The clusters of blossoms have a sweet, pleasing fragrance. After flowering, green berries appear that ripen to a shiney black colouration during late summer. The dark berries tend to persist on the tree into the winter months and add visual interest. Songbirds love dining on the berries and they are an invaluable food source during the early winter months when berries are often scarce. Handy Tips: Trim Ligustrum Japonicum to shape in late winter - if you clip during the late summer you will lose the flowers and the berries. As the tree ages, it tends to develop an open form. Many people prune the tree up to create a bonsai-like appearance. The tree's rapid growth rate makes it a favourite for creating topiary specimens. Although, the tree tolerates pruning well, it does not require it. When left to grow naturally, the Ligustrum japonicum develops a multi-stemmed form. Ligustrum Japonicum is exceptionally hardy and naturalizes well in areas with mild winters. It requires very little care to thrive. The Ligustrum japanicum grows well in full sun or partial shade. It is not overly picky about soil type. Once established, it can withstand periods of drought.  We also have mature Ligustrum Japonicum variegated in a full standard shape. Max Height 6m Approx.

Salix Caprea Pussy Willow Goat Willow Tree

Salix Caprea Pussy Willow Goat Willow Tree

Salix Caprea Kilmarnock or Kilmarnock Weeping WillowDuring the 19th century, the first Kilmarnock willow tree was discovered on the banks of the Ayr. Thomas Lang of Kilmarnock was so taken with it that he started to propagate it. By 1853 Salix Caprea Kilmarnock was introduced into commerce and became widely available for purchase by gardeners. Salix Caprea Kilmarnock is a small dwarf deciduous tree. Its diminutive size makes it ideal for any garden. It grows to a height of 2.5 meters with a compact width of 2.5 meters. It is relatively slow growing and generally takes between ten to twenty years to attain its full height. It has a Royal Horticulture Society badge declaring it perfect as a pollinator. A Kilmarnock Willow is the perfect weeping willow for small gardens. The weeping, pendulous branches of the Kilmarnock weeping willow are bare during the spring months except for furry golden catkins that create visual interest and contrast to the landscape. The catkin-laden branches are ideal for creating floral bouquets or drying for crafts. As summer approaches, the soft green leaves start to emerge on the branches. When autumn arrives, the foliage turns a bright golden hue. Plant the Kilmarnock willow in a location in the garden where it will receive full sun for optimum growth. However, it will tolerate partial shade but its growth may be significantly slowed in such a location. It prefers well-draining soil that is moderately fertile. Like most willow varieties, it will withstand waterlogged roots and brief periods of flooding. Plant it in clay, loam, or sandy soil conditions. After planting, keep the soil moderately moist to encourage the small tree to establish a strong, diverse root system. After the first year, the tree will be able to withstand short periods of drought. The Kilmarnock weeping willow tree’s dwarf size and low care requirements make it relatively maintenance free. However, if a branch becomes broken or diseased, it should be pruned away to maintain the tree’s striking appearance. A Kilmarnock Willow can also be trimmed during the winter months when the tree is dormant to maintain its shape and size. Pruning tends to stimulate the tree to produce new growth during the spring and summer monthsSalix Caprea Kilmarnock is a striking addition to any cottage or woodland garden setting. Plant it besides a small garden pond to create a focal point, or next to a patio or walkway where everyone can enjoy its eye-catching catkins during the spring time. The Kilmarnock weeping willow is also often referred to as the pussy willow or the goat’s willow tree. More varieties of weeping trees that work very well in smaller gardens include the Weeping Silver Birch tree and the Weeping Silver Pear tree.

Acer Negundo Aureomarginatum Box Elder Aureomarginatum

Acer Negundo Aureomarginatum Box Elder Aureomarginatum

Acer Negundo Aureomarginatum or Box Elder AureomarginataThe Acer Negundo aureomarginatum is a variegated form of a Box Elder tree. It only reaches 7 meters in height when fully grown and its diminutive sizes makes it an ideal tree for small gardens. It can be grown either as a single stem or multi-stem tree. Box Elder Aureomarginata grows at a rapid rate. It is a long-living deciduous tree and should flourish in the garden for at least fifty or more years.Variegated leaves are the true focal point of the small tree. The pinnate leaves have a yellowish-white coloured margin and the interior is a bright green. Plant this tree beside evergreens or other darker plants to create visual contrast in the garden and to truly appreciate its lovely variegated foliage. During the autumn, the foliage typically turns yellow before falling from the tree to reveal interesting pale grey branches. During the spring and early summer, the tree does flower and bear tiny fruit but they offer no ornamental significance and are often completely overlooked. The small Box Elder grows best when planted in full sun or partial shade. It is a hardy little tree and will tolerate a wide array of soil types and pH levels. However, it does not like overly wet feet, so you should pick a well-draining planting site. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and often thrives where more delicate trees perish. After planting the tree, keep the root system moist but not overly wet for the first year to encourage strong root growth. Once the tree has established itself, it will readily tolerate periods of brief drought.Typically, the Acer negundo Aureomarginatum does not require extensive pruning, but if you wish to trim the tree to maintain its size then the pruning should be done in the summer after the leaves have fully matured. The tree should not be pruned in the winter or spring because it is prone to bleeding sap. Most variegated trees are prone to reversion which means that the tree’s dominant characteristic of growing solid green leaves can take over. If the tree grows a branch that only has solid green foliage and the leaves boast no variegation than the limb should be pruned to maintain the tree’s variegated characteristics. The tree often sprouts at the base so it can be grown as a large oval-shaped shrub. If you wish the Box Elder to remain a single stem specimen then promptly remove any shoots from the base of the tree as they appear. The Box Elder Aureomarginata is a German cultivar. Its history can be traced back to 1883. The small tree has stood the test of time and still remains a garden favourite. It is a wonderful choice for an accent tree, focal specimen, or to provide modest shade. We also sell the Acer Negundo Flamingo which is also a variety of variegated box elder.

It was introduced to the UK in 1902 and is named after the director of the St Petersburg Botanic Garden Albert Regel. Its conical habit make it useful avenue or street tree. Our specimens are shaped as standard trees on long clear stems. This is a deciduous hybrid of bird cherry that grows naturally in a conical form. Flowers bloom as the foliage appears giving off a sweet scent. As summer progresses the flowers turn into small black fruits that birds love. The leaves are narrow, pointed ovals with a serrated edging. They emerge mid-green and turn rich autumnal shades of yellow and red before falling in the winter months. Its bark is grey-brown and smells of bitter almonds if damaged. In summer its conical shape points skyward particularly when the tree is young. As it matures, the oval shape emerges. Because of this tidy, upward pointing form it is a great ornamental flowering tree for smaller spaces.Height and Width of Prunus Padus AlbertiiA mid-sized tree Bird Cherry Albertii will reach a mature height of 7-13 metres and spread over approximately four metres. However, bird cherries are tough and they will grow in most conditions. Any soil is suitable, including alkaline chalky soils, but it will grow at a slower pace on poorer soils. Boost yours with well-rotted manure in the planting hole and a thick layer of mulch each year.Prunus Padus Albertii will tolerate compacted soils and waterlogged soil within reason, making it a good choice for temporarily flooded areas, but it won’t flourish in consistently boggy grounds. This is a low maintenance tree that requires no pruning, but if you want to remove crossed or broken branches do so in the winter. If you have a restricted space but still want a flowering tree, Prunus Padus Albertii is a beautiful choice. Mulch with organic matter for nourishment and you’ll reap the benefit of jewelled foliage from spring to late autumn. Younger plants also benefit from wind protection and shade from direct sun that can cause leaf scorch. If you want to grow your young Acer Tataricum Ginnala into a tree specimen you will need to chose a central leader stem and cut away all others to form a trunk. Bush specimens can be left alone, although it’s best to cut out any dead or crossing branches in winter. Amur Maple Ginnala is a real winner for the mid-sized garden. Robinia pseudoacacia Frisia Golden Robinia False Acacia Tree

Robinia pseudoacacia Frisia Golden Robinia False Acacia Tree

Robinia Pseudoacacia Frisia or Golden RobiniaRobinia pseudoacacia Frisia (also known as False Acacia Tree or Golden Robinia) is a mid-sized tree naturally native to the South Eastern United States. Robinia is a deciduous tree with small white flowers and eye-catching golden yellow foliage, along with a strongly fissured bark with strident spines on the leaf stems which makes it easy to recognize.
