Nothofagus Antarctica Antarctic Beech Tree for Sale UK

Nothofagus Antarctica Antarctic Beech Tree for Sale UK

Nothofagus Antarctica or the Antarctic Beech tree, is an unusual and hardy tree which will add interest to your landscape. Native to southern Chile and Argentina, Nothofagus Antarctica provides year-round interest. In spring, it leafs out in small, irregularly-edged heart-shaped leaves which are a glossy, bright green, and have a pleasant scent. The flowers are small but fragrant and are followed by small nuts. By the end of the summer the leaves have changed to a bright yellow. After the leaves fall, the twisted bare branches and trunk reveal their attractive, scaly dark-brown bark with silver-white highlights. It is not surprising that a tree with the name Antarctic should be winter-hardy and indeed Nothofagus Antarctica is suitable for planting throughout the UK and northern Europe. This large tree will grow to 8 meters tall and 4 metres wide in 20 years, before reaching an ultimate height of more than 12 metres and spread of 8 metres over a period of 50 years. It will need little pruning to maintain its twisted, irregular shape.Plant your Nothofagus Antarctica in full sun in an exposed or sheltered position, but it prefers a lime-free acidic soil, whether clay, sand, or loam. It needs a moist but well-drained soil for its deep taproot, and when young will not tolerate extended dry periods. However, waterlogged soil can result in a fungal infestation, so good drainage is essential. It is not troubled by insects. The Antarctic beech needs a large space in which to grow to its full size, so it is best in a large garden or extensive property. It makes a striking specimen tree for the middle of a lawn, or if there is room, in a small grouping. An alternative use of Nothofagus Antarctica is as a decorative topiary shrub, achieved through annual pruning in late spring or early summer. A shape similar to bonsai will result, and will add considerable interest to a small garden. This unique and striking tree from the southern tip of South America has much to recommend it to a gardener in the UK through all the seasons of the year. Whether allowed to grow large, or pruned to be kept small, Nothofagus Antarctica’s attractive form and pleasant foliage will make an excellent addition to your garden.

If yours is very alkaline it’s simple to grow Oyama Magnolia in a container of ericaceous compost, or you can dig plenty of ericaceous compost and manure into the planting hole and top it up each year. Mespilus Germanica Common Medlar Fruit Tree for Sale Online

Mespilus Germanica Common Medlar Fruit Tree for Sale Online

Mespilus Germanica or Common MedlarA member of the rose family, Mespilus Germanica, also known as Common Medlar, is a deciduous, ornamental fruit tree with a long history. This trouble-free tree has been cultivated throughout Europe for over 3,000 years, but it seems that these days it’s been unjustly forgotten. However, because of its attractive features, interesting edible fruit, and incredible resilience, Common Medlar is becoming popular again. A small tree with an umbrella-shaped crown, Common Medlar blossoms in late spring to early summer. The profusion of large, pure white flowers akin to wild roses looks striking framed by attractive foliage. The leaves of Common Medlar are toothed, oblong, with a hairy underside, medium green turning to striking shades of golden yellow and brown in the autumn. The self-fertile, five-petaled flowers are followed by edible fruit. Small and brown, Medlar fruit is both decorative and tasty. Although hard and inedible if picked too early, the fruit is quite delicious when fully ripe. The creamy texture and a flavour that’s similar to applesauce are achieved by leaving the picked fruit to soften for a few weeks, a process known as bletting.  Adaptable and sturdy, Common Medlar tolerates most soils, but prefers well-drained, fertile soil. It will thrive in a sunny location, sheltered from strong winds, but it can be grown in partial shade as well. Easy to grow and to care for, Common Medlar is pest and disease free. This long-lived tree can grow to be 4 to 8 metres high and across when mature, but it takes a few decades for it to achieve its ultimate height. Most specimens, however, remain relatively small, around 2 to 3 meters tall. Native to Europe and Asia, this ancient cultivar is fully hardy in Britain and Ireland. It won’t be bothered by severe winters or need sheltering when the temperatures drop below zero. As a matter of fact, the Medlar fruit benefits if it is harvested just after the first frost, as it speeds up the softening process. Self-pollinating and compact when fully established, Common Medlar is an ideal tree for small gardens. It won’t take up much space, and it provides year-round interest to the garden, with generous summer bloom, good autumn colour and unusual fruit that adorns bare branches as winter approaches. We have many more ornamental trees on offer and an ever growing selection of fruit trees, all of which are for sale online with UK and Ireland delivery.

As the leaves mature, they take on a mint green hue and in the autumn the tree’s foliage becomes a blazing display of orange and red. Each spring, the tree is adorned with small pink buds that quickly open to a bevy of pink flowers that rapidly fade to snow white.  As the flowers wilt and die back, the tree produces an abundance of reddish and purple fruits that often persist on the branches into autumn. The tree usually attracts a wide assortment of birds and wildlife who favour the tasty fruit as a dietary staple.  The Amelanchier arborea Robin Hill grows best in full sun or partial shade. However, for the best autumn foliage colours, the Amelanchier tree should be grown in full sunlight. It prefers a planting location that has rich, acidic soil that is well-draining. It does not tolerate wet-feet, but also cannot withstand periods of drought. Ideally, the soil should be moist but not boggy.

Cercis Canadensis Ruby Falls. Eastern Redbud Ruby Falls

Cercis Canadensis Ruby Falls. Eastern Redbud Ruby Falls

Cercis Canadensis Ruby FallsThe Cercis Canadensis Ruby Falls, also known as the Cercis Ruby Falls or the Eastern Redbud Ruby Falls, is a small ornamental deciduous flowering tree that has a weeping growth habit. It is a F2 hybrid that was cultivated from a cross between Covey redbud also known as Lavender Twist and the Cercis Canadensis Forest Pansy redbud. Ruby Falls inherited the best of both its parent trees. From the Covey redbud it gets its weeping growth habits and it features the deep, dark ruby-purple leaf colour of the Forest Pansy. The Cercis Canadensis Ruby Falls was first cultivated by U.S. breeder Dr. Dennis Werner on behalf of the North Carolina State University. Cercis Canadensis Ruby Falls grows to a height of almost 2m and has a canopy width of up to 2.5m. The tree’s canopy is pendulous with zig-zagging branch growth that gives it a cascading appearance. Often the Cercis Canadensis Ruby Falls is the first tree in the garden to start displaying flowers. The tree’s blossoms appear on the bare branches as tiny bright pink-purple pea-like flowers. As the tree matures, flowers even appear on the tree’s trunk. The dainty flowers persist on the tree for two to three weeks. They attract a wide assortment of pollinators to the garden. After the flowers start to fade, the tree begins to produce foliage. During the mid-summer months, small seed pods form which are a favourite food source for birds, squirrels and other animals. The leaves of Eastern Redbud Ruby Falls are every bit as beautiful and visually pleasing as the tree’s flowers. Each leaf is uniquely heart-shaped. In the spring, they appear in shades of ruby-purple. As the leaves unfurl they take on a deep purple hue. By mid-summer the leaves are a deep, dark green colour. When autumn arrives, the tree’s foliage takes on a brilliant yellow colouration. Cercis Ruby Falls ever-changing colours make it a wonderful focal point specimen for any garden. The compact growth habit helps it fit into even a small garden area.  It grows well in full or partial sun. The tree has a moderate growth rate. It tolerates a wide range of soil types and is fairly hardy. When first planted, it likes to be kept moist, but once established it can withstand periods of drought. It is highly disease resistant and grows well with only minimal care. The tree may benefit from staking when first planted in areas of high wind.

Amelanchier Laevis Snowflakes. Juneberry Snowy Mespilus Tree

Amelanchier Laevis Snowflakes. Juneberry Snowy Mespilus Tree

Amelanchier Laevis Snowflakes is a beautiful, upright deciduous tree of the Amelanchier family prized for its large white spring flowers. It originates from North America and is also known as the Juneberry Tree or Snowy Mespilus Tree. The terms snowflakes and snowy refer to the large star-shaped flowers that cover its branches in April and attract early pollinators. This pearly spring display is the main reason gardeners choose a Snowy Mespilus Tree over others.Alongside those striking blooms Amelanchier Laevis Snowflakes produces fresh copper-coloured foliage that stands out against the white flowers. Its bushy foliage gradually turns green in the summer when its edible purple-red berries ripen. Birds will quickly eat the Juneberry Tree’s fruit. In autumn the Snowy Mespilus Tree produces dramatic orange-red foliage. It is a beautiful and practical choice for a small, wildlife-friendly garden.Juneberry Tree Hardiness LevelsThe Juneberry Tree is hardy in all UK climates and requires no specific care. Although it prefers acid or neutral ground it will grow in the majority soils and can withstand extreme cold if not waterlogged around the roots. Winds will not harm the tree but will shake the flowers loose more rapidly. How To Use Amelanchier Laevis SnowflakesIf you have a small garden the Snowy Mespilus Tree is a practical addition because it can be grown as a large ornamental shrub or as a compact, shallow-rooted specimen tree reaching an approximate height of four metres within twenty years.  A Snowy Mespilus Tree can be grown in the ground or in a large container which will limit its size. If you choose to grow one in a pot ensure you provide plenty of water in the hot summer months to ensure the best autumnal foliage display. How To Care For Your Amelanchier Laevis SnowflakesVery little pruning is required, in fact an Amelanchier Laevis Snowflakes is self-sufficient, but it’s worth cutting out any crossed stems or dead wood in winter or late spring to hold the shape. Amelanchier Laevis Snowflakes will grow best in moist free-draining soil with a yearly layer of thick organic mulch which will improve the flower display in spring. All Amelanchier appreciate sun on their foliage canopy. If you can plant yours in sunlight it will boost the rich orange autumnal colours. The tough yet beautiful Amelanchier Laevis Snowflakes is a valuable source of colour throughout the year with frothy white flowers in spring, fresh green summer foliage with purple-red berries and a stunning orange autumnal display. Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains. Vitis Vinifera Blanc Climber

Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains. Vitis Vinifera Blanc Climber

Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, or Vitis Vinifera Blanc, is one of the oldest wine grape varieties. Still grown today, this grape vine is an interesting and fruitful addition to your garden.Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains originated in the Mediterranean region in the times of the ancient Greeks and Romans. It is a popular white wine grape variety in France and Germany. This climbing vine produces an early crop of bunches of small, round, fragrant fruit which can be used as table grapes or in wine-making. At maturity they will be golden yellow or light brown. The young leaves are bronze-red and shiny when they emerge in spring, turning a medium green and then brown before falling in late autumn. Vitis Vinifera Blanc is winter hardy in most of the UK, and will grow vigorously with some support. It can extend up to a metre in its first year. Like all grape varieties it will respond to pruning with increased fruit production. In the first year restrict the growth to one main stem, pinching out side shoots at one leaf. Cut the vine back to three buds when winter comes, and in the second year let 2 shoots grow. Do not allow the vine to fruit until the third year, when you can let 2 lateral shoots produce 6 buds each, growing up into shoots which will produce fruit. In future years, do the same with the two strongest shoots, cutting away the rest, and let 8-10 buds each grow upwards and produce bunches of highly fragrant, delicious grapes. Our vines are between 5-7 years old, plant vines 1.5 metres apart. Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains grows best in full sun in moist, freely draining fertile loam or clay soil with a neutral ph. They do not do well in sandy soil. They will need a sheltered location as their early-setting buds are vulnerable to a late frost. Since all grape varieties need to be trellised, Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains is a natural choice for training on a south-facing wall where it will receive the protection it needs, as well as creating interest with its vine structure, leaves, and the decorative, fragrant fruit in late summer and early autumn. The heavy scent can be enjoyed when the vines are planted near a seating area. Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains has been cultivated for thousands of years, and with good reason. Its fragrant, delicious grapes are still prized today both for wine-making and fresh eating, and its vigorous vines will add interest to your garden.
