Corylus Rode Zellernoot Red Leaved Hazel Tree for Sale Online

Corylus Rode Zellernoot Red Leaved Hazel Tree for Sale Online

Corylus Rode Zellernoot or Red Leaved HazelIf you are looking for a productive and beautiful native hedge or shrub then it’s worth considering Corylus Rode Zellernoot - the Red Leaved Hazel. This stunning hazel hybrid produces edible nuts and glorious foliage. The full botanical name is Corylus Avellana Rode Zellernoot. It is a hybrid of Corylus Maxima and the common hazel Corylus Avellana. Rode Zellernoot means ‘red nut’ which refers to its leaf colour. Red Leaved Hazel is a decorative deciduous shrub that produces new red leaves in spring each evenly spaced along its fine, whippy branches. These serrated red leaves grow larger than the common hazel and mature into a bronze-green during the summer months before falling in the autumn. In summer, after the foliage is established, Red Leaved Hazel produces catkins. The male catkins are yellow-green and the female are a much smaller red catkin. Edible oval-shaped hazelnuts begin to appear in late summer to early autumn. The nuts are hidden inside red-toned husks with only the top peeping out. The nuts are particularly tasty and attractive to wildlife. How Hardy Is Corylus Rode ZellernootThe Red Leaved Hazel is extremely hardy, its parents being native to the UK. It will survive our winters and wet conditions, although young plants may need protection from harsh, drying winds for the first few years. How To Use Corylus Rode ZellernootAll hazels provide shelter and food for wildlife, particularly when grown as part of a hedgerow. This makes it an attractive hedging option for a wildlife garden. Hazel manages well in coastal and urban areas too. Corylus Rode Zellernoot will produce lots of new growth each year, reaching a maximum height of 3-4 metres, but it can be cut back in winter to maintain its size and shape.Corylus Rode Zellernoot varies from other varieties of hazel in that its foliage is a brighter red than its cousins, and its stems run straight to form a tight hedgerow, unlike Corylus Avellana Red Majestic which is an attractive red shade but has corkscrew branches.  How to Care For Corylus Rode ZellernootHazelnuts are among the easiest nuts to grow and they take up much less space than you would think. The Hazelnut family includes Corylus Avellana which is the common hazel and closely related filberts and cobnuts. All members of the Hazel family produce showy catkins in spring (these are male) which pollinate the very small flowers (female).  If you want to create a hedge in larger spaces, place your hazels four metres apart and reduce their height to encourage bushiness. Hazelnuts are very hardy being tolerant of cold and wet conditions. It will prefer a rich, loamy soil but will grow well in chalky and clay conditions provided it’s not water-logged. To ensure a maximum supply of nuts, it is best to plant at least 2 hazel trees (of any variety) as they are wind pollinated.Corylus Rode Zellernoot is as highly valued for its decorative display of changing leaves and showy catkins as it is for the tasty hazelnuts. If you want to grow a crop of nuts for autumn, help wildlife and create a beautiful display the Red Leaved Hazel is for you.

It makes a striking specimen tree for the middle of a lawn, or if there is room, in a small grouping. An alternative use of Nothofagus Antarctica is as a decorative topiary shrub, achieved through annual pruning in late spring or early summer. However, because of its attractive features, interesting edible fruit, and incredible resilience, Common Medlar is becoming popular again. A small tree with an umbrella-shaped crown, Common Medlar blossoms in late spring to early summer. The profusion of large, pure white flowers akin to wild roses looks striking framed by attractive foliage. The leaves of Common Medlar are toothed, oblong, with a hairy underside, medium green turning to striking shades of golden yellow and brown in the autumn. The self-fertile, five-petaled flowers are followed by edible fruit. Small and brown, Medlar fruit is both decorative and tasty. Although hard and inedible if picked too early, the fruit is quite delicious when fully ripe. The creamy texture and a flavour that’s similar to applesauce are achieved by leaving the picked fruit to soften for a few weeks, a process known as bletting.  Adaptable and sturdy, Common Medlar tolerates most soils, but prefers well-drained, fertile soil. It will thrive in a sunny location, sheltered from strong winds, but it can be grown in partial shade as well. Easy to grow and to care for, Common Medlar is pest and disease free. This long-lived tree can grow to be 4 to 8 metres high and across when mature, but it takes a few decades for it to achieve its ultimate height. Most specimens, however, remain relatively small, around 2 to 3 meters tall. Native to Europe and Asia, this ancient cultivar is fully hardy in Britain and Ireland. It won’t be bothered by severe winters or need sheltering when the temperatures drop below zero. As a matter of fact, the Medlar fruit benefits if it is harvested just after the first frost, as it speeds up the softening process. Self-pollinating and compact when fully established, Common Medlar is an ideal tree for small gardens. It won’t take up much space, and it provides year-round interest to the garden, with generous summer bloom, good autumn colour and unusual fruit that adorns bare branches as winter approaches. We have many more ornamental trees on offer and an ever growing selection of fruit trees, all of which are for sale online with UK and Ireland delivery.

Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains. Vitis Vinifera Blanc Climber

Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains. Vitis Vinifera Blanc Climber

Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, or Vitis Vinifera Blanc, is one of the oldest wine grape varieties. Still grown today, this grape vine is an interesting and fruitful addition to your garden.Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains originated in the Mediterranean region in the times of the ancient Greeks and Romans. It is a popular white wine grape variety in France and Germany. This climbing vine produces an early crop of bunches of small, round, fragrant fruit which can be used as table grapes or in wine-making. At maturity they will be golden yellow or light brown. The young leaves are bronze-red and shiny when they emerge in spring, turning a medium green and then brown before falling in late autumn. Vitis Vinifera Blanc is winter hardy in most of the UK, and will grow vigorously with some support. It can extend up to a metre in its first year. Like all grape varieties it will respond to pruning with increased fruit production. In the first year restrict the growth to one main stem, pinching out side shoots at one leaf. Cut the vine back to three buds when winter comes, and in the second year let 2 shoots grow. Do not allow the vine to fruit until the third year, when you can let 2 lateral shoots produce 6 buds each, growing up into shoots which will produce fruit. In future years, do the same with the two strongest shoots, cutting away the rest, and let 8-10 buds each grow upwards and produce bunches of highly fragrant, delicious grapes. Our vines are between 5-7 years old, plant vines 1.5 metres apart. Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains grows best in full sun in moist, freely draining fertile loam or clay soil with a neutral ph. They do not do well in sandy soil. They will need a sheltered location as their early-setting buds are vulnerable to a late frost. Since all grape varieties need to be trellised, Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains is a natural choice for training on a south-facing wall where it will receive the protection it needs, as well as creating interest with its vine structure, leaves, and the decorative, fragrant fruit in late summer and early autumn. The heavy scent can be enjoyed when the vines are planted near a seating area. Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains has been cultivated for thousands of years, and with good reason. Its fragrant, delicious grapes are still prized today both for wine-making and fresh eating, and its vigorous vines will add interest to your garden.

Prunus Domestica Opal Plum Tree Self Pollinating Plum Tree

Prunus Domestica Opal, more commonly known as the Opal Plum Tree, is a dependable fruiting edible plum tree, compact in size. Although prized for the dessert fruit it produces, this cultivar is also highly decorative, especially during the flowering season. Prunus Domestica Opal is self-fertile and as such does not require a pollination partner, another reason why this is a good choice of fruit tree where space is limited. In the early spring, this small tree is enveloped by clusters of small, white blossoms that adorn the bare branches. The flowers are followed by glossy, green foliage and fruit. The fruit appears green in early August, maturing to yellow and purple shades in time for the plum harvest. A cross between a gage and plum, the Opal variety produces abundant crops of sweet and juicy fruit. The plums of this variety are delicious when eaten plucked directly from the tree or can also be used to make preserves or plum brandy.Relatively undemanding, Opal Plum Tree thrives in full sunlight and loamy or sandy soils that are moist and well-drained. This cultivar will appreciate a sheltered position, as it is susceptible to late frosts due to its early bloom. Tough and enduring, this plum tree variety can survive winter temperatures as low as -20 degrees. Prunus Domestica Reine Claude Verte Plum Greengage Plum

Prunus Domestica Reine Claude Verte Plum Greengage Plum

Prunus Domestica Reine Claude Verte is a greengage plum variety. Greengage plums are cultivars of the common European plum (Prunus Domestica), best known for their greenish skin and rich, confectionery flavour. Although the first true greengage was bred in France, the ancestor of these particular plums was a wild specimen found in Anatolian peninsula. Its full botanical name is Prunus domestica subsp. italica Reine Claude Verte. This upright, compact tree flaunts a lush display of white blossoms in March through to April. The dainty, 5-petalled flowers are attractive to pollinators and followed by round, light green plums that can be picked from the tree in September.
