Magnolia Sieboldii Oyama Magnolia Siebolds Summer Flowering

Magnolia Sieboldii Oyama Magnolia Siebolds Summer Flowering

Magnolia Sieboldii is also known as Oyama Magnolia or Siebold's Magnolia. Magnolia is a deciduous flowering shrub or small tree with very attractive creamy white flowers with pink and yellow centres.  The flowers are lightly fragrant with a scent of delicate spices. Magnolia Sieboldii is often used as small to medium sized ornamental tree. Magnolia Sieboldii blooms bears its striking flowers in summer rather than the more common spring flowering magnolias. Glossy deep green leaves measuring 15 centimetres in length set off Magnolia Sieboldii’s attractive creamy white flowers. These flowers have bright pink and yellow stamens at the centre with a light spicy fragrance. Egg-shaped buds appear in the summer rather than early spring when most magnolias tend to bloom.  Oyama Magnolia’s flowers measure ten centimetres in diameter. They are cup-shaped, nod in the breeze and give a lot of 3D texture to a planting arrangement. These flowers will last from summer through to the end of September attracting all manner of pollinators. How Hardy Is Magnolia Sieboldii?Magnolia Sieboldii is one of the toughest magnolias you can buy. It is hardy across the UK withstanding frosts and snow provided its roots are not waterlogged. How To Use Magnolia SieboldiiPlace Siebold's Magnolia at the back of the flower bed to create a toned down backdrop that accentuates bright summer bedding plants and the vast array of summer colours. Oyama Magnolia will grow well in a container too, but beware of over-watering as this will rot its roots. You can also use Siebold's Magnolia as a small to medium-sized ornamental statement tree. It will reach a height of three metres and spread over the same distance. How To Care for Magnolia SieboldiiBecause Magnolias have such attractive flowers many people think they are tricky to grow, but this is not the case. Siebold's Magnolia in particular is very easy to care for.Heavy rain and strong winds will damage the blooms and foliage, but if you choose a sheltered spot it will happily thrive. Siebold's Magnolia prefers moist but well-drained soil and likes full sun to partially shady spots. Oyama Magnolia will grow in most soils, preferring acid to neutral earth. If yours is very alkaline it’s simple to grow Oyama Magnolia in a container of ericaceous compost, or you can dig plenty of ericaceous compost and manure into the planting hole and top it up each year. Magnolias rarely need pruning. If yours has dead or diseased wood cut this out after flowering. Do not prune in springtime as this will remove the flower buds.Other ornamental trees include Prunus Serrulata Multistem. Our large range of magnolias are for sale in London at our garden centre and also for sale online with nationwide delivery in the UK.

Stewartia Pseudocamellia Japanese Camellia Deciduous Camellia

Stewartia Pseudocamellia Japanese Camellia Deciduous Camellia

Stewartia Pseudocamellia has many names including the Japanese Camellia, Deciduous Camellia and Japanese Stewartia. This is an attractive, deciduous, ornamental shrub or tree. Left to its own devices, it has a naturally rounded habit and grows slowly into a small, multi-stem deciduous tree. It owes its name – Pseudocamellia – to its showy white flowers. These camellia-like flowers are up to 8 cm wide, with five white petals with orange anthers at the centre. The flowers are round and flat and are produced in summer, generally from June right up until the end of August.Stewartia Pseudocamellia has highly decorative foliage. Emerging new foliage each spring is purple, maturing over the summer to rich green and then finally to fiery red or orange (depending on conditions) in autumn before dropping its leaves. The Deciduous Camellia has quite a striking bark that peels to display a mottled mixture of creams and browns, rather resembling marble. This is best observed during the winter months and early spring. The Japanese Camellia is very hardy if it is kept out of drying winds. It has survived winters as cold as -30 °C. Deciduous Camellia performs best if it is sheltered as the blooms and foliage can be damaged by cold drying winds. A sheltered partially shady spot is ideal although an aspect with morning sun will also work. Stewartia Pseudocamellia likes a well-drained but moist acidic to neutral soil. There is no need to prune as it holds its own attractive natural shape unless you want a specific shrub shape. Mulch around the base in early spring and water young trees in hot weather.Young Japanese Camellia shrubs especially will need watering, but once they are established become tough even in freezing temperatures. It will grow to a maximum height of 12 metres and spread over eight, making it a large shrub or smaller variety of tree suited to compact gardens. The Japanese Camellia is best used as a statement shrub or small ornamental tree. It has many noteworthy attributes including its eye-catching foliage colour from spring right through to autumn, showy white flowers in mid-summer and in winter months its flaking bark is an attractive textural addition.Stewartia Pseudocamellia has received the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society, a sure sign that it will perform well in most gardens.

Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland Evergreen Compact Magnolia

Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland Evergreen Compact Magnolia

Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland is a compact evergreen magnolia renowned for its large showy, fragranced flowers. Evergreen and elegant, this striking cultivar is an excellent choice for a specimen plant or mixed shrub borders. Like its deciduous cousins, Magnolia Grandiflora also produces massive showy flowers but tends to do this in summer rather than spring. The cultivar ‘Maryland’ differentiates itself by rounded, compact shrub (rather than tree) shape. With all the noteworthy qualities of its close relatives, this eye-catching cultivar has a few interesting differences. The lush foliage consists of glossy, broad, elliptic leaves, but unlike most bull bay Magnolias, Maryland doesn’t have a brown underside. Instead, the large, leathery leaves are light, olive green beneath, forming a rounded, compact shrub, rather than a tree. Although the foliage differentiates this cultivar from its evergreen cousins, the blossoms are as equally stunning as those of other Magnolia cultivars. In the summer, massive creamy white flowers grace this compact shrub. Large and goblet-shaped, the blossoms have a sweet, citrusy fragrance.Tolerant of full sun to partial shade, this flowering shrub thrives in moist but well-drained soil, rich in humus. When it comes to acidity, Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland prefers neutral to slightly acidic soils. Apart from being highly decorative, this ornamental shrub is quite robust. Fully hardy in Britain and Ireland, Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland can survive even when the temperatures drop to -20 degrees. However, to avoid potential damage from frost and biting winds, apply a layer of mulch during winter, and choose a sheltered location for planting.A cross between Magnolia Grandiflora and Magnolia Virginiana, the cultivar Maryland is quite fast growing, although it stays fairly compact even when fully mature. This evergreen shrub can grow to be 3 to 8 meters tall and 2 to 4 metres wide, which is, when compared to other Magnolia Grandiflora varieties, rather petite. With a rich, leathery foliage, elegant, compact form and clusters of aromatic blossoms, Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland is ideal as a focus or a specimen plant. Although this plant has a year-round interest, its graceful and sophisticated appearance is at its best in the summer, when this shrub is in full bloom. Consider planting this Magnolia variety in a mixed shrub border, either underplanted with low-growing flowering shrubs, or combined with medium-sized, evergreen bushes.See also our full range of Magnolia varieties we have available.

It originates from North America and is also known as the Juneberry Tree or Snowy Mespilus Tree. The terms snowflakes and snowy refer to the large star-shaped flowers that cover its branches in April and attract early pollinators. Wisteria Floribunda Caroline Wisteria Sinensis Caroline

Wisteria Floribunda Caroline Wisteria Sinensis Caroline

Wisteria Floribunda Caroline or  Wisteria Sinensis Caroline also Wisteria CarolineThe Wisteria Sinensis was first introduced to the western world from China in 1816. The cultivar Wisteria Sinensis Caroline is a relatively new variety. It was created in New Zealand and is widely coveted for its breath-taking flower display and striking foliage. Unlike other wisteria climbers, Wisteria Floribunda Caroline blooms in the mid- to late spring months. The fragrant flowers persist into the early summer. The flower racemes of the vine start to bloom simultaneously to create a stunning display. Each dangling flower cluster measures up to 30 centimetres in length. The racemes are comprised of small pea-sized lilac and purple blossoms. Bees, butterflies and birds adore the sweetly fragrant blooms. After flowering, the Wisteria Sinensis Caroline produces bean-like seedpods. As summer progresses, the pods ripen. When autumn arrives, they normally still persist on the vine for visual interest. The foliage of Wisteria Caroline is feathery and soft green in colour. The pinnate leaves are made of 11 small leaflets that emerge a grey-green in the spring and take on a brighter green shade during summer. When autumn arrives, the dense foliage turns a bright yellow. When fully grown, the Wisteria Floribunda Caroline will easily reach a height of 9 meters. It grows well against walls, a trellis, an arbour, a pergola, or a fence. It will also grow free-standing if given ample support for its heavy frame.Plant the Wisteria Sinensis Caroline in full sun for ample flower production. It will grow in partial shade, but will generally not produce as dramatic of a flower display. The vine prefers moderately fertile soil that is well-draining. During the first year of growth, keep the soil moist to encourage the vine to produce a strong root system. After the first year, the vine can tolerate short periods of drought well. The Wisteria Caroline requires regular pruning to maintain its overall size and shape. Pruning also promotes new growth and better flower production. Restricting the vine’s vegetative growth by trimming encourages the vine to produce short flower shoots. Prune Wisteria Caroline twice a year: in January-February and again in July-August. There is little doubt that the Wisteria Floribunda Caroline is a dramatic addition to any garden setting that is sure to gather great admiration. Its eye-catching beauty is awe-inspiring. Plant the vine anywhere that the blooms can be visually enjoyed and where the blossoms heavenly aroma will tantalize the senses.

Humulus Lupulus or Common Hop Native Deciduous Climber

Humulus Lupulus or Common Hop Native Deciduous Climber

Humulus Lupulus or Common HopHumulus Lupulus is our familiar Common Hop. Grown over a trellis or twined in a hedgerow it’s an unusual alternative to honeysuckle or clematis. The Common Hop is well known as the ingredient that gives beer its bitter taste and as a sleep aid to combat anxiety, but it’s also a pretty, deciduous climber for the garden.Common hops have long, twining stems that reach up to six metres and sprout large amounts of green lobed and coarsely toothed leaves in early spring. Each leaf is particularly large measuring up to 15 cms in length. During late summer female hop flowers bloom in cone-shaped yellowy-green clusters all along the thin strong stems. It's these female flowers that develop into fruits that are called ‘hops’and used for brewing. During the winter months, common hops die down to the ground and will regrow the following spring.Height And Spread of Humulus Lupulus                                                                 Common Hops is a long and thin climber that will reach up to 6 metres and spread over 1.5-2 metres. It needs support to clamber up such as a trellis or obelisk as it doesn’t have suckers or tendrils. How Hardy Is Humulus LupulusCommon hops are native to the UK and Europe so they are able to withstand our sub-zero winters if they are planted in well-drained soil. Once established, common hops are relatively pest-free and give enough twining support are hardy enough to leave to their own devices. How To Use Humulus LupulusCommon hops are a great alternative to clematis, honeysuckle and jasmine particularly if your soil is less than perfect. Hops look bright and fresh growing over an archway and scrambling their way through a hedge. Their flexible stems are perfect to twine into a fence line and give summer cover to a seating area without destroying the lawn, and because their flowers arrive in late summer pairing common hops with an early flowering clematis provides an extended flowering season.A good choice for a wildlife garden too as pollinators enjoy the hop flowers and cover provided by its large shady leaves.  How To Care For Humulus LupulusCommon hops are hardy but prefer a sheltered position and lots of sun. It will tolerate partial shade but a great flower display is achieved in a sunny spot. Ensure the ground doesn’t dry out and tie back stems to the support as hops lack suckers or tendrils – it is a ‘bine rather than a ‘vine’. In winter when the foliage has fallen, cut common hops back to root level and wait for it to re-emerge in the spring.

This stunning hazel hybrid produces edible nuts and glorious foliage. The full botanical name is Corylus Avellana Rode Zellernoot. It is a hybrid of Corylus Maxima and the common hazel Corylus Avellana. Rode Zellernoot means ‘red nut’ which refers to its leaf colour. Red Leaved Hazel is a decorative deciduous shrub that produces new red leaves in spring each evenly spaced along its fine, whippy branches. These serrated red leaves grow larger than the common hazel and mature into a bronze-green during the summer months before falling in the autumn. In summer, after the foliage is established, Red Leaved Hazel produces catkins. The male catkins are yellow-green and the female are a much smaller red catkin. Edible oval-shaped hazelnuts begin to appear in late summer to early autumn. The nuts are hidden inside red-toned husks with only the top peeping out. The nuts are particularly tasty and attractive to wildlife. How Hardy Is Corylus Rode ZellernootThe Red Leaved Hazel is extremely hardy, its parents being native to the UK. It will survive our winters and wet conditions, although young plants may need protection from harsh, drying winds for the first few years. How To Use Corylus Rode ZellernootAll hazels provide shelter and food for wildlife, particularly when grown as part of a hedgerow. This makes it an attractive hedging option for a wildlife garden. Hazel manages well in coastal and urban areas too. Corylus Rode Zellernoot will produce lots of new growth each year, reaching a maximum height of 3-4 metres, but it can be cut back in winter to maintain its size and shape.Corylus Rode Zellernoot varies from other varieties of hazel in that its foliage is a brighter red than its cousins, and its stems run straight to form a tight hedgerow, unlike Corylus Avellana Red Majestic which is an attractive red shade but has corkscrew branches.  How to Care For Corylus Rode ZellernootHazelnuts are among the easiest nuts to grow and they take up much less space than you would think. The Hazelnut family includes Corylus Avellana which is the common hazel and closely related filberts and cobnuts. All members of the Hazel family produce showy catkins in spring (these are male) which pollinate the very small flowers (female).  If you want to create a hedge in larger spaces, place your hazels four metres apart and reduce their height to encourage bushiness. Hazelnuts are very hardy being tolerant of cold and wet conditions. It will prefer a rich, loamy soil but will grow well in chalky and clay conditions provided it’s not water-logged. To ensure a maximum supply of nuts, it is best to plant at least 2 hazel trees (of any variety) as they are wind pollinated.Corylus Rode Zellernoot is as highly valued for its decorative display of changing leaves and showy catkins as it is for the tasty hazelnuts. If you want to grow a crop of nuts for autumn, help wildlife and create a beautiful display the Red Leaved Hazel is for you.

Nothofagus Antarctica Antarctic Beech Tree for Sale UK

Nothofagus Antarctica Antarctic Beech Tree for Sale UK

Nothofagus Antarctica or the Antarctic Beech tree, is an unusual and hardy tree which will add interest to your landscape. Native to southern Chile and Argentina, Nothofagus Antarctica provides year-round interest. In spring, it leafs out in small, irregularly-edged heart-shaped leaves which are a glossy, bright green, and have a pleasant scent. The flowers are small but fragrant and are followed by small nuts. By the end of the summer the leaves have changed to a bright yellow. After the leaves fall, the twisted bare branches and trunk reveal their attractive, scaly dark-brown bark with silver-white highlights. It is not surprising that a tree with the name Antarctic should be winter-hardy and indeed Nothofagus Antarctica is suitable for planting throughout the UK and northern Europe. This large tree will grow to 8 meters tall and 4 metres wide in 20 years, before reaching an ultimate height of more than 12 metres and spread of 8 metres over a period of 50 years. It will need little pruning to maintain its twisted, irregular shape.Plant your Nothofagus Antarctica in full sun in an exposed or sheltered position, but it prefers a lime-free acidic soil, whether clay, sand, or loam. It needs a moist but well-drained soil for its deep taproot, and when young will not tolerate extended dry periods. However, waterlogged soil can result in a fungal infestation, so good drainage is essential. It is not troubled by insects. The Antarctic beech needs a large space in which to grow to its full size, so it is best in a large garden or extensive property. It makes a striking specimen tree for the middle of a lawn, or if there is room, in a small grouping. An alternative use of Nothofagus Antarctica is as a decorative topiary shrub, achieved through annual pruning in late spring or early summer. A shape similar to bonsai will result, and will add considerable interest to a small garden. This unique and striking tree from the southern tip of South America has much to recommend it to a gardener in the UK through all the seasons of the year. Whether allowed to grow large, or pruned to be kept small, Nothofagus Antarctica’s attractive form and pleasant foliage will make an excellent addition to your garden.
