Ligustrum Vulgare Atrovirens Privet Atrovirens Hedging Shrub

Ligustrum Vulgare Atrovirens Privet Atrovirens Hedging Shrub

Ligustrum Vulgare Atrovirens is an evergreen variety of Common Privet with soft narrow leaves and white pollinator-magnet flowers in spring. It’s an excellent hedging shrub that will grow in virtually any conditions.Ligustrum Vulgare is our native privet and the only privet that grows wild in the British Isles. Privet Atrovirens is a cultivar of Common Privet that means ‘always green’. It’s been bred to retain the tough almost indestructible aspects of common privet with a more attractive leaf. Small, narrow leaves that are soft to touch are retained all year and in spring new slightly lighter green growth emerges. New growth in spring is followed by tiny white flowers that bloom throughout the summer if it’s left unclipped. Flowers mature into small black berries that last into winter.Atrovirens tolerates harsh pruning and will grow quickly in almost any soil that isn’t waterlogged. It’s a good choice of tough evergreen in exposed, coastal, and low maintenance areas.Height And Spread of Ligustrum Vulgare AtrovirensPrivet Atrovirens is a fast-growing variety of privet that will reach a maximum height and spread of two metres. How Hardy is Ligustrum Vulgare AtrovirensThis is a very hardy evergreen that grows in almost any soil that’s well-drained. Once established it tolerates drought, pruning, and pollution too.How To Use Ligustrum Vulgare AtrovirensPrivet Atrovirens is an excellent short or tall hedging shrub and creates a dense windbreak around seating areas. It suits low maintenance wildlife areas with its nectar-rich flowers and thickly growing branches that provide plenty of cover for birds and small mammals.Privet Atrovirens will grow in coastal areas, on slopes, and in areas that other shrubs struggle in such as dry, shaded areas and windy spots. How To Care For Ligustrum Vulgare AtrovirensVery little care is needed once Atrovirens is established. It will grow in full sun to shade in exposed or sheltered areas. It is not fussy about soil and tolerates pollution. This is a fast-growing evergreen, so if you want to maintain its height and spread it will need a twice-yearly trim. Cut back new growth by 15 cms each time it grows to 30cms avoiding flowering times and late summer because frost can damage new growth. Mulch well and water until established.

Fagus Sylvatica or Common Beech Hedging for sale Online UK

Fagus Sylvatica or Common Beech Hedging for sale Online UK

Fagus Sylvatica or Common Beech TreeFagus Sylvatica (also known as the Common Beech or European Beech) is native to South Wales and the southern United Kingdom and belongs to the family of Fagaceae. This is a popular hedging variety of Fagus Sylvatica, which although deciduous, gets its new leaves early every year. In the autumn, its old leaves drop off very slowly, often remaining on the plant throughout the winter. These features make it suitable for hedging. In fact, beech is one of the most popular deciduous hedging plants in the UK. In the winter season we also have this plant available in bare root form. Fagus Sylvatica produces new foliage between March and April each year. The shape of the leaves are ovate. New leaves emerge in spring in hues of beautiful green-yellow. As the foliage matures over the summer, the leaves become a deeper green. In autumn, they turn reddish-brown. Fagus Sylvatica is monoecious, meaning it produces both male and female flowers, which it produces during late April and May. Female flowers grow in pairs and are green. Male flowers are in the form of catkins and drape elegantly from long stalks. After the flowering period, edible beech nuts are produced, which these days, are mainly used to feed livestock. Whole enriched oil-nuts start forming in autumn, around September. The leaves of common beech take some time to decay completely. Fagus Sylvatica can live for hundreds of years and is UK hardy for all regions of United Kingdom. Beech is wild-life friendly providing shelter and food for many species. It is not overly fussy about soil type but thrives in limestone or chalky soils. See also Purple Beech for Hedging. For mixed beech and hornbeam hedging, see also Hornbeam Hedging Carpinus Betulus which we have availabile in many sizes.

Prunus Lusitanica Angustifolia Myrtifolia Shrubs London UK

Prunus Lusitanica Angustifolia Myrtifolia Shrubs London UK

Prunus Lusitanica Angustifolia is a wide bushy evergreen shrub. Commonly known as the narrow leaf Portuguese Laurel or Portugal Laurel and also as Prunus Lusitanica Myrtifolia. The variety of Laurel is very similar to the Prunus Lusitanica but it has slightly narrower longer slimmer leaves which are a darker green and has a more compact growth habit. It also sports new stems that are a striking red in colour.Prunus Lusitanica Myrtifolia is a very useful plant to have as a hedge or as an ornamental shrub. These particular Portugal Laurel specimens are ideal for use as a dense evergreen hedge, having already a nice, bushy shape. Providing year round interest, the evergreen Portugal Laurel Angustifolia has beautiful white/cream, fragrant flowers in summer (around June to August) followed by cherry-like fruits that are loved by birds. Prunus Lusitanica Myrtifolia is very hardy, despite the fact that it originally came to Britain from Portugal, which is why it is known as the Portuguese Laurel. Down through the years, Angustifolia has proved itself to be very hardy indeed – in fact more hardy than its larger leafed cousin the Cherry Laurel. This is handy to know if you live in the Northern part United Kingdom. Eminently clippable, Myrtifolia sometimes called Angustifolia is fast becoming very popular as a hedging plant . As a hedge you can keep it clipped to your preferred height but it is capable of reaching lofty heights of 5 metres.  Prunus Lusitanica Angustifolia can be trimmed very easily and is often used in topiary - as half standard trees or full standard trees. View our Portuguese Laurel root ball plants - highly cost effective for hedging. The main use of Prunus Lusitanica Myrtifolia is as a formal hedge. It forms dense compact cover with the additional bonus of coloured flowers and fruits. If you have a wildlife-friendly garden Portuguese laurel creates the perfect habitat for birds, pollinators and eventually hedgehogs and other small mammals that will nest beneath it. If you have an area that needs protection from winds, for example a seating area, a vegetable garden or delicate flower border, Portuguese laurel provides an attractive yet tough form of defense from cold gusty winds. Your Prunus Lusitanica Angustifolia will need just one prune a year once it’s reached your desired height. It appreciates an annual mulch around its roots to encourage healthy growth and young plants need water in the dry spells.

Mahonia Aquifolium or Oregon Grape Low Spreading Mahonia. Low growing Mahonia.

Mahonia Aquifolium or Oregon Grape Low Spreading Mahonia. Low growing Mahonia.

Mahonia Aquifolium, otherwise known as Oregon Grape, is a hardy, attractive, evergreen plant that has considerable ornamental value, as well as producing edible fruit. It’s a versatile landscape plant for UK gardeners to include in their landscape plans. Aquifolium is a low growing, spreading variety of Mahonia and has the usual clusters of yellow flowers followed by blue-black berries. Native to the Pacific Northwest, Mahonia Aquifolium was first brought to the UK in 1823, and has been a favourite of gardeners here ever since. Its evergreen leaves, similar to those of the holly plant, are red-tinted when they emerge in the spring, changing to a glossy deep green in summer, then purple in the autumn, and finally burgundy tinged with bronze in winter. In the winter to early spring, the plants are covered with clusters of fragrant yellow flowers. The blue-black berries which follow later in the year can be made into jams, jellies or wine. To ensure a good set of fruit, plant more than one Mahonia Aquifolium bush for cross-pollination. Hardy in most regions of the UK, Mahonia Aquifolium will grow to a mature height of 1-1.5 meters and spread of 1.25 metres over a period of 10 to 20 years. Once the plant has reached close to its full size, begin an annual pruning of your Mahonia Aquifolium to maintain vigorous growth, cutting back a quarter of the older stems to within 15 cm of the central trunk once it has finished flowering in early spring. These woodland natives will do best when planted in partial to full shade, in any well-drained soil, in an exposed or sheltered location. Mahonia Aquifolium is extremely drought-resistant, making it an ideal ground cover in challenging spots in the landscape, where there is little sun and the ground is dry. Since it is mostly resistant to pests and disease, it is almost maintenance-free.Mahonia Aquifolium is a perfect fit for a wildlife or woodland garden, where plants will spread by root suckers to fill in available space. On a north or east side of a house, where there is partial to full shade, Mahonia Aquifolium will make an excellent ground cover for a dry spot along the foundation, and in a shady corner of a mixed border the attractive, glossy leaves provide a backdrop for flowering plants throughout the growing season, before blooming themselves starting in November when most plants are done for the year. Mahonia Aquifolium has many qualities to recommend it to the UK gardener, from its winter flowering habit, to its attractive evergreen foliage, and its low-maintenance vigorous growth!
