Alnus Incana Grey Alder Multi & Single Stem Trees for Sale

Alnus Incana Grey Alder Multi & Single Stem Trees for Sale

Alnus Incana, also known as Grey Alder Tree, is an exceptionally hardy variety, noted for its attractive foliage. This small to mid-sized, deciduous tree and these specimens are mature trees which can be used for specimen planting.Sharing all the noteworthy qualities with the Common Alder Alnus Glutinosa, Alnus Incana gets its common name from the grey felted underside of its foliage. The leaves are typical for the species, dark green and leathery with doubly serrated edges. Not unlike its close relatives, this tree produces sticky young growth and a profusion of yellow catkins during March. The male catkins drop as the flowering season ends, while the female catkins harden into wood-like cones with winged seeds. The highly-decorative cones remain on the three as the seasons pass, offering particular interest throughout the following winter.Same as it is the case with the Common Alder, the Grey Alder Tree is a reliable performer in poor conditions. Not only does Alnus Incana tolerate poor soils, it will fix nitrogen from the air, resulting in the improvement of the soil it is planted in. Alnus Incana tolerates any type of soil, regardless of its fertility and drainage. Grey Alder is not bothered by overly wet soils nor drought, and it will not mind urban pollution. For best results, however, plant this cultivar in moist, but well-drained soil, in full sun to dappled shade. Introduced to the United Kingdom as far back as the 18th century, Grey Alder Tree is fully hardy in Britain and Ireland. Tough and robust, this tree will adapt and survive even in the severest European climates, where temperature drop far lower than 20 degrees below zero. Strong, cold winds and frost will not damage it, whether it is grown in an exposed or a sheltered location in the garden.Vigorous, Grey Alder will achieve a maximum size of over 12 metres in height and over 8 metres in width. However, as it is a long-lived cultivar, the expected growth is in a period of 20 to 50 years. Considered low-maintenance, the multi-stemmed habit of this deciduous tree needs very little to stay healthy and tidy. As the foliage drops to midwinter, lightly prune, removing any dead, damaged, or congested shoots from the tree.Grey Alder is a versatile, highly-decorative tree that will thrive in any conditions. Plant it en masse to reclaim land or create a stunning thicket in woodland gardens. The multi-stemmed habit of this tree makes it a good candidate for a specimen plant or a backdrop in mixed shrub borders. Suitable for coastal and city gardens, and particularly recommended for gardens with poor soil, where this tree can encourage a significant improvement in soil quality. You might be interested in our selection of deciduous trees or our collection of large and mature trees.

Cydonia Oblonga Vranja Quince Vranja Fruiting Quince Trees

Cydonia Oblonga Vranja Quince Vranja Fruiting Quince Trees

Cydonia Oblonga Vranja or Quince Vranja, is a beautiful single variety quince that produces sweet-smelling flowers and large showy fragrant fruit, golden-yellow when ripe. The RHS has given Vranja the Award of Garden Merit. A small deciduous fruit tree, Quince Vranja is a popular choice for its strong, upright habit. Its leaves are grey-green with a fluffy texture beneath, and they turn an attractive buttery yellow before falling in autumn. Beautiful pale pink flowers appear in May. They are bowl-shaped and showy measuring up to 5 cm across. These blooms turn into the pale green fruits that gradually sun-ripen into golden-yellow quince in late autumn. They are extremely fragrant and attractive fruits. How Hardy Is Cydonia Oblonga Vranja?Quince are native to south-western Asia and are particularly abundant in Iran and Serbia. This means they are used to harsh, cold winters and hot summers. Although this is a hardy shrub that will tolerate wet and cold conditions of the UK, during early spring the flowers are susceptible to late frosts. How To Use Cydonia Oblonga VranjaThis is the best variety of quince to fan train against a sunny wall, but it can also be grown as a shrub or small tree. Although most gardeners grow quince for the edible fruit, they are decorative and fragrant enough to provide a focal point from spring to late autumn. The versatile Quince Vranja looks stunning as a stand-alone shrub in an ornamental lawn, as part of a deep flower border, or trained against a wall. It will reach a maximum height of four metres and similar spread, but this will take ten to twenty years depending on growing conditions. Cydonia Oblonga Vranja is self fertile, but several quince of a different variety means chances of pollination, and therefore fruit, are even greater. How To Care For Cydonia Oblonga VranjaThis is a tough quince but warm conditions are needed to maximise fruit ripening, so choose a sunny spot for your Quince Vranja. Quince will tolerate most soils preferring moisture tentative, but not water-logged.  A thick layer of well -rotted manure in early spring will help produce fruit and keep it healthy.  Little pruning is required, but if you are fan-training tie back stems and cut out any forward growing or damaged shoots in late winter or early spring.

Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland Evergreen Compact Magnolia

Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland Evergreen Compact Magnolia

Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland is a compact evergreen magnolia renowned for its large showy, fragranced flowers. Evergreen and elegant, this striking cultivar is an excellent choice for a specimen plant or mixed shrub borders. The cultivar ‘Maryland’ differentiates itself by rounded, compact shrub (rather than tree) shape. With all the noteworthy qualities of its close relatives, this eye-catching cultivar has a few interesting differences. The lush foliage consists of glossy, broad, elliptic leaves, but unlike most bull bay Magnolias, Maryland doesn’t have a brown underside. Instead, the large, leathery leaves are light, olive green beneath, forming a rounded, compact shrub, rather than a tree. Although the foliage differentiates this cultivar from its evergreen cousins, the blossoms are as equally stunning as those of other Magnolia cultivars. In the summer, massive creamy white flowers grace this compact shrub. Large and goblet-shaped, the blossoms have a sweet, citrusy fragrance.Tolerant of full sun to partial shade, this flowering shrub thrives in moist but well-drained soil, rich in humus. When it comes to acidity, Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland prefers neutral to slightly acidic soils. Apart from being highly decorative, this ornamental shrub is quite robust. Fully hardy in Britain and Ireland, Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland can survive even when the temperatures drop to -20 degrees. However, to avoid potential damage from frost and biting winds, apply a layer of mulch during winter, and choose a sheltered location for planting.A cross between Magnolia Grandiflora and Magnolia Virginiana, the cultivar Maryland is quite fast growing, although it stays fairly compact even when fully mature. This evergreen shrub can grow to be 3 to 8 meters tall and 2 to 4 metres wide, which is, when compared to other Magnolia Grandiflora varieties, rather petite. With a rich, leathery foliage, elegant, compact form and clusters of aromatic blossoms, Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland is ideal as a focus or a specimen plant. Grown in a container, it fares well both in full sun and partial shade. When grown under optimal conditions, even if it’s in a large container, Carpinus Betulus Spirals will grace your garden for years to come. Morus Nigra Tree or Black Mulberry Tree for Sale Online UK

Morus Nigra Tree or Black Mulberry Tree for Sale Online UK

The Morus Nigra Tree or the Black Mulberry, is an attractive, deciduous tree which can also be managed as a shrub. Its origins are in South Western Asia. Originally brought to Britain by the Romans, it was soon widely imported by James I who was looking to establish a silk industry. Unfortunately, the intended silk worm only feeds on the White Mulberry, Morus Alba. Its legacy as old Black Mulberry remains in historic landscapes and gardens throughout Britain. The Morus Nigra Tree is characterised by very bright green leaves, heart shaped, with a serrated looking edge making it a unique decorative addition. The gnarly bark gives even younger trees an old and historic appearance. The fruits emerge throughout the summer time, ripening to a deep purple in colour and loganberry-like in appearance. When mature, the Black Mulberry has a spreading, rounded shape giving it wide appeal in landscape architecture. The edible fruit of this tree has a unique rich flavour.  Actual fruiting may not begin until 8-9 years after planting. Harvest season for the fruit is over a relatively short window of time between August and September. This tree or shrub will tolerate most soil conditions, preferring a lighter well drained soil.  Moisture is critical in the first few years of establishment. It is an extremely long lived plant which will spread almost as wide as it grows tall. It is a great addition to a garden, bringing not only a beautiful plant but a conversation piece that includes its deep history. The Black Mulberry Tree is also suited to vertical gardens along walls and fences if managed and trained properly.Growing to a mature height between 3-7m and as wide as 10m, Morus Nigra prefers an open and sunny area. It is very hardy across the UK and is generally easy to grow. Training is important, so as to create a well-formed tree more quickly. Leave plenty of room for it to spread, usually 5-10m in diameter for the tree to develop. They prefer good fertility and moisture in a light and well drained texture. Staking as a tree will prevent wind-rock and lead to good roots.Mulberries can be grown in containers if managed well with careful watering, the use of a good loam-based compost blend, and repotting to slightly larger containers each year.Fertilizer applied in late winter, followed by a mulch rich in organic matter in the spring will optimize growth, flower set, and fruiting. In the open garden, grow and train formative pruning as a standard or half-standard tree.  Prune when fully dormant; about a month after leaves have fallen.
