New African Masquerades - - Bog - Yale University Press - Plusbog.dk

An exploration of contemporary African masquerade that reveals its cultural contexts, artistic innovations, and intersection with museum collection practices By placing masquerade at the forefront of contemporary African art, this volume shows how masquerade is a dynamic and urban phenomenon shaped by shifting global concerns. Essays examine the lack of institutional recognition offered to present-day masquerade artists and the methods used to curate masquerade art at the museum level. An international group of scholars and artists explore the motivations and creative decisions of masquerade artists, highlighting their stories and providing a nuanced understanding of masquerade as a contemporary expression of human experience. This lavishly illustrated study includes more than 150 images, artist’s biographies, in-depth analyses of masquerade ensembles in relation to themes of collaboration, economics, and meaning, and a discussion of the methodologies for ethically commissioning and acquiring masquerade art. The Book of Esther in the Age of Rembrandt - Abigail Rapoport - Bog - Yale University Press - Plusbog.dk

The Book of Esther in the Age of Rembrandt - Abigail Rapoport - Bog - Yale University Press - Plusbog.dk

An exploration of how the biblical heroine Queen Esther, a symbol of resilience and a figure of immense popularity, was portrayed in seventeenth-century Dutch art In the age of Rembrandt van Rijn, the biblical Book of Esther was a popular source of inspiration for diverse communities in the Netherlands, both Jewish and Christian. Traditionally, the Esther story is read annually on the Jewish holiday of Purim. For immigrant Jewish communities living with new freedom in more tolerant Amsterdam, celebrating Purim—notably through finely produced Esther scrolls and theater productions—became a meaningful expression of Jewish culture. For the Dutch, Queen Esther’s heroism came to represent their emerging nation’s identity. Rembrandt and his contemporaries depicted essential scenes of Esther’s story in paintings, prints, drawings, and decorative arts. Examining how Esther was represented in art and popular culture in Rembrandt’s time, this beautifully illustrated volume includes essays that discuss the visual culture and ceremonial art of Purim and examine the queen’s status as a heroine in seventeenth-century Netherlands. A postscript reveals Esther’s continued appeal through a close look at work by contemporary American artist Fred Wilson, who reimagines the biblical heroine as the abolitionist Harriet Tubman. Leonardo: Discoveries from Verrocchio's Studio - Laurence Kanter - Bog - Yale University Press - Plusbog.dk

Leonardo: Discoveries from Verrocchio's Studio - Laurence Kanter - Bog - Yale University Press - Plusbog.dk

Presents exciting, original conclusions about Leonardo da Vinci’s early life as an artist and amplifies his role in Andrea del Verrocchio’s studio This groundbreaking reexamination of the beginnings of Leonardo da Vinci’s (1452–1519) life as an artist suggests new candidates for his earliest surviving work and revises our understanding of his role in the studio of his teacher, Andrea del Verrocchio (1435–1488). Anchoring this analysis are important yet often overlooked considerations about Verrocchio’s studio—specifically, the collaborative nature of most works that emerged from it and the probability that Leonardo must initially have learned to paint in tempera, as his teacher did. The book searches for the young artist’s hand among the tempera works from Verrocchio’s studio and proposes new criteria for judging Verrocchio’s own painting style. Several paintings are identified here as likely the work of Leonardo, and others long considered works by Verrocchio or his assistant Lorenzo di Credi (1457/59–1536) may now be seen as collaborations with Leonardo sometime before his departure from Florence in 1482/83. In addition to Laurence Kanter’s detailed arguments, the book features three essays presenting recent scientific analysis and imaging that support the new attributions of paintings, or parts of paintings, to Leonardo. Whistler in Watercolor - Emily Jacobson - Bog - Yale University Press - Plusbog.dk

Whistler in Watercolor - Emily Jacobson - Bog - Yale University Press - Plusbog.dk

A focused investigation of Whistler’s watercolors that introduces readers to a rarely seen aspect of the artist’s creative output In the 1880s, James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) reinvented himself through the medium of watercolor. At the time, excellence in watercolor was most often associated with British artists, and most notably with the work of J. M. W. Turner (1775–1851). Whistler’s embrace of watercolor allowed the expatriate artist to present himself as an heir to the great Turner, while at the same time creating easily portable works that could supply an American market and, the artist hoped, help secure his art-historical legacy in his home country. Indeed, it was the American Gilded Age industrialist Charles Lang Freer who would amass the largest collection of Whistler’s watercolors, eventually bequeathing them to the Smithsonian in 1906. This publication is the first systematic study of Freer’s amazing treasure trove of more than 50 watercolors by Whistler and includes figures, landscapes, nocturnes, and interiors. Providing both an art-historical context that looks into the contemporary reception of the works, as well as rigorous scientific analysis of Whistler’s materials and techniques, this volume offers a groundbreaking look into an overlooked segment of the celebrated artist’s oeuvre. Gauguin - - Bog - Yale University Press - Plusbog.dk

Gauguin - - Bog - Yale University Press - Plusbog.dk

The first in-depth investigation of Gauguin’s portraits, revealing how the artist expanded the possibilities of the genre in new and exciting ways Paul Gauguin (1848–1903) broke with accepted conventions and challenged audiences to expand their understanding of visual expression. Nowhere is this phenomenon more evident than in his portraits, a genre he remained engaged with throughout all phases of his career. Bringing together more than 60 of Gauguin’s portraits in a wide variety of media that includes painting, works on paper, and sculpture, this handsomely illustrated volume is the first focused investigation of the multifaceted ways the artist approached the subject. Essays by a group of international experts consider how the artist’s conception of portraiture evolved as he moved between Brittany and Polynesia. They also examine how Gauguin infused his work with symbolic meaning by taking on different roles like the Christ figure and the savage in his self-portraits and by placing his models in suggestive settings with alluring attributes. This welcome addition to the scholarship on one of the 19th century’s most innovative and controversial artists reveals fascinating insights into the crucial role that portraiture played in Gauguin’s overall artistic practice.
