In Rescuing Humanity , Willem H. Vanderburg reminds us that we have relied on discipline-based approaches for human knowing, doing, and organizing for less than a century. During this brief period, these approaches have become responsible for both our spectacular successes and most of our social and environmental crises. At their roots is a cultural mutation that includes secular religious attitudes that veil the limits of these approaches, leading to their overvaluation. Because their use, especially in science and technology, is primarily built up with mathematics, living entities and systems can be dealt with only as if their "architecture" or "design" is based on the principle of non-contradiction, which is true only for non-living entities. The French masses overwhelmingly supported the Revolution in 1789. Economic hardship, hunger, and debt combined to put them solidly behind the leaders. But between the people''s expectations and the politicians'' interpretation of what was needed to construct a new state lay a vast chasm. Olwen H. Hufton explores the responses of two groups of working women – those in rural areas and those in Paris – to the revolution''s aftermath. Women were denied citizenship in the new state, but they were not apolitical. In Paris, collective female activity promoted a controlled economy as women struggled to secure an adequate supply of bread at a reasonable price. Rural women engaged in collective confrontation to undermine government religious policy which was destroying the networks of traditional Catholic charity. Hufton examines the motivations of these two groups, the strategies they used to advance their respective causes, and the bitter misogyinistic legacy of the republican tradition which persisted into the twentieth century.

Everything was symbolized according to its meaning and value: a fallen branch from a tree became a lever; a tree trunk floating in the river became a canoe. Homo logos created communities based on cultures: humanity''s first megaproject. Further symbolization of the human community and its relation to nature led to the possibility of creating societies and civilizations. Everything changed as these interposed themselves between the group and nature. Homo societas created ways of life able to give meaning, direction, and purpose to many groups by means of very different cultures: humanity''s second megaproject. What Das Kapital did for the nineteenth century and La technique did for the twentieth, Willem H. Vanderburg''s Living in the Labyrinth of Technology seeks to create for the twenty-first century: an attempt at understanding the world in a manner not shackled to overspecialized scientific knowing and technical doing. As the state comes to play a larger role in the community the question of the extent to which government is subject to the general law of the land assumes increasing importance. This book examines the limits of two related forms of state immunity: crown or governmental immunity from statue and intergovernmental immunity. The first results from the rule of statutory construction that the crown, representing the executive government, is not bound by legislation except by express words or necessary implication. The second is of a constitutional order and provides a degree of freedom to each level of authority in a federal system from the laws of the other level of authority.The author considers, in separate chapters, the effect which statues can have upon a government when it confronts the legal system in tort proceedings, in criminal actions, as a party to a contract, as a creditor, and as a potential taxpayer. Some of the particular questions that are canvassed are as follows: can the crown recover damages against a subject beyond the limit liability prescribe by statue? Is a servant of the crown, such as a member of the armed forces, liable to conviction for a traffic offence committed while in the course of his duty? Is the Commonwealth of Australia as a landlord limited in what it may charge its tenants by state rent control legislation? Can a provincial liquor board import supplies for resale free of Canadian customs duties? The author’s examination of judicial decisions on intergovernmental immunity, one of the most difficult areas of constitutional law, exposes the confusion that exists as to the precise scope of the immunity. One of the principal purposes of this book is to impose some order on his jurisprudential chaos and to suggest directions of approach for the future. This incisive analysis of a crucial area of the law will be interest to all who are concerned with governmental accountability as well as to jurists, judges, and lawyers.
