The Statistical System of Communist China - Choh Ming Li - Bog - University of California Press - Plusbog.dk

The Statistical System of Communist China - Choh Ming Li - Bog - University of California Press - Plusbog.dk

One of the most baffling problems in contemporary Chinese economic studies concerns the validity of official statistics. In the continuing discussion of claims and counter-claims, appeals to common sense are unconvincing. Because of the pressing need for substantial evidence on which to base a judgment, the present inquiry is an important contribution to the literature on Communist China. The book provides a quizzical but objective look at the statistical system of the country, and attempts to appraise the quality of official statistics by analyzing the development and inner working of the sytem. Its approach is broadly historical, beginning with the pre-Communist period (before 1949) and dividing the next dozen years into phases: the foundation of the state statistical system (1952 - 57), the period of decentralization (1958 - 59), and subsequent efforts at reorganization. Li's study of the development of a national statistical system in China is particularly instructive in delineating both the obstacles to such development that may be expected in a densely populated, largely agricultural country and the measure that have been adopted to overcome them. Therefore his hard-headed conclusions concerning the Chinese experience should be of lively intrest in those underdeveloped countries that are now planning or executing development programs. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1962.

A Guide to The Maximus Poems of Charles Olson - George F. Butterick - Bog - University of California Press - Plusbog.dk

A Guide to The Maximus Poems of Charles Olson - George F. Butterick - Bog - University of California Press - Plusbog.dk

A Guide to the Maximus Poems of Charles Olson offers an essential companion to Olson's monumental and intricate Maximus Poems. This scholarly guide navigates the complexities of Olson’s allusive and expansive verse, which spans themes from local Gloucester history to universal mythologies. With nearly 4,000 annotations, the guide meticulously decodes references to historical figures, literary works, geographical landmarks, and philosophical concepts. It moves line by line, offering insight into Olson’s sources and intellectual framework, including his borrowings from Algonquin legends, Arabic angelology, and Whitehead’s cosmology. Rich with unpublished material from Olson’s papers, as well as letters, interviews, and classroom notes, the guide aims to equip readers with the tools to actively engage with Olson's text, uncovering its layered meanings through his principle of ‘istorin—"to find out for oneself." Structured chronologically rather than alphabetically, the guide mirrors the progression of Olson’s three-volume epic, weaving historical scholarship with interpretive clarity. Each annotation situates Olson’s references in context, revealing the intricate interplay between history, myth, and the poet's life in Gloucester. The guide further illuminates Olson’s creative process, tracing the evolution of his ideas through drafts, personal correspondences, and published works. Designed as both a reference and an entry point into Olson’s ambitious poetic project, it not only deepens appreciation for The Maximus Poems but also serves as a model for literary scholarship, inviting readers to engage with Olson’s world on their own intellectual journey. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. A Field Guide to White Supremacy - - Bog - University of California Press - Plusbog.dk

A Field Guide to White Supremacy - - Bog - University of California Press - Plusbog.dk

Drawing explicit lines, across time and a broad spectrum of violent acts, to provide the definitive field guide for understanding and opposing white supremacy in America Hate, racial violence, exclusion, and racist laws receive breathless media coverage, but such attention focuses on distinct events that gain our attention for twenty-four hours. The events are presented as episodic one-offs, unfortunate but uncanny exceptions perpetrated by lone wolves, extremists, or individuals suffering from mental illness—and then the news cycle moves on. If we turn to scholars and historians for background and answers, we often find their knowledge siloed in distinct academic subfields, rarely connecting current events with legal histories, nativist insurgencies, or centuries of misogynist, anti-Black, anti-Latino, anti-Asian, and xenophobic violence. But recent hateful actions are deeply connected to the past—joined not only by common perpetrators, but by the vast complex of systems, histories, ideologies, and personal beliefs that comprise white supremacy in the United States. Gathering together a cohort of researchers and writers, A Field Guide to White Supremacy provides much-needed connections between violence present and past. This book illuminates the career of white supremacist and patriarchal violence in the United States, ranging across time and impacted groups in order to provide a working volume for those who wish to recognize, understand, name, and oppose that violence. The Field Guide is meant as an urgent resource for journalists, activists, policymakers, and citizens, illuminating common threads in white supremacist actions at every scale, from hate crimes and mass attacks to policy and law. Covering immigration, antisemitism, gendered violence, lynching, and organized domestic terrorism, the authors reveal white supremacy as a motivating force in manifold parts of American life. The book also offers a sampling of some of the most recent scholarship in this area in order to spark broader conversations between journalists and their readers, teachers and their students, and activists and their communities. A Field Guide to White Supremacy will be an indispensable resource in paving the way for politics of alliance in resistance and renewal.

A People's Guide to the San Francisco Bay Area - Rachel Brahinsky - Bog - University of California Press - Plusbog.dk

A People's Guide to the San Francisco Bay Area - Rachel Brahinsky - Bog - University of California Press - Plusbog.dk

An alternative history and geography of the Bay Area that highlights sites of oppression, resistance, and transformation. “Lavishly produced, with beautiful images and crystal clear prose, A People’s Guide to the San Francisco Bay Area is for readers and activists who have taken part in protests and demonstrations for decades, and from Berkeley and Oakland to San Francisco, Sonoma and beyond.”—CounterPunchA People’s Guide to the San Francisco Bay Area looks beyond the mythologized image of San Francisco to the places where collective struggle has built the region. Countering romanticized commercial narratives about the Bay Area, geographers Rachel Brahinsky and Alexander Tarr highlight the cultural and economic landscape of indigenous resistance to colonial rule, radical interracial and cross-class organizing against housing discrimination and police violence, young people demanding economically and ecologically sustainable futures, and the often-unrecognized labor of farmworkers and everyday people. The book asks who had—and who has—the power to shape the geography of one of the most watched regions in the world. As Silicon Valley's wealth dramatically transforms the look and feel of every corner of the region, like bankers' wealth did in the past, what do we need to remember about the people and places that have made the Bay Area, with its rich political legacies? A useful companion for travelers, educators, or longtime residents, this guide: Features over 100 must-visit sites to explore and learn from. Demonstrates how to read the landscape for historical clues. Connects multicultural streets, lush hills, suburban cul-de-sacs, and wetlands across the Bay Area. Covers a wide range of locations, from the North Bay to the South Bay, East Bay, and San Francisco. Includes original maps to guide readers through the region. Offers thematic tours—such as The Intertribal Bay and The Youth in Revolt tours—as starting points for creating personalized routes.
