Poetic Acts & New Media - Tom O'connor - Bog - University Press of America - Plusbog.dk

Poetic Acts & New Media advances the fields of literary and new media studies by clarifying boundaries between competing genres and media through the creation of a new artistic genre, "media poetry." This aesthetic mode of expression/becoming seeks to transform mass culture (our codes of communication) by self-consciously acknowledging how textual, audio, and/or visual signs are constructed according to their simulation and not their representation. This study draws heavily upon literary media theories that intersect with Gilles Deleuze''s philosophy of ''Sense'' as a simulated power of sensory transformations. Media poetry becomes a complex power of ''Sense'' by blending conventional mass-media codes with poetic simulations that provide alternative forms of creating meaning. Poetic Acts & New Media specifically examines the works of several poets that exemplify this multi-sensory approach to printed-text poetry, especially: ·Langston Hughes ·Tony Medina ·David Wojahn ·John Kinsella ·David Trinidad. It also analyzes several contemporary films that embody the multi-modal logic of media poetry: ·David Lynch''s Mullholland Drive ·Cameron Crowe''s Vanilla Sky ·Spike Jonze''s Being John Malkovich. In addition, this study interprets two influential primetime TV shows as exemplars of media poetry: Twin Peaks and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. All media poetry, regardless of genre or medium, allows readers/viewers to envision "reality production" as a rewriteable and poetic enterprise that can productively remediate any transparent abstraction or common-sense realism.

The Internet and the Construction of the Immigrant Public Sphere - Kehbuma Langmia - Bog - University Press of America - Plusbog.dk

The Internet and the Construction of the Immigrant Public Sphere - Kehbuma Langmia - Bog - University Press of America - Plusbog.dk

The Internet has become a powerful medium for Africans in the Diaspora to meet for cross border dialogue. Cameroonians all over the world are using this tool for what the present study considers to be a public-sphere discourse. Cameroonians living in the United States and other nations use the Internet to discuss and debate the political, social, economic, and cultural aspects of the nationhood of Cameroon with the aim of seeking solutions to some of those pressing needs that confront the country. This study builds on Habermas and other leading feminist authors'' conceptualization of the democratic public sphere, central to Habermas'' theory of communicative action. This study''s theoretical framework incorporates elements of the African experience in order to examine the dominant, oppositional and parallel themes that arise from four Cameroonian websites just before the national presidential election in 2004. The methodology adapts Jager''s critical discourse analytical (CDA) framework, which was deemed an appropriate methodology because it sought not only to analyze the linguistic component of the discourse in the four websites, but more importantly to examine the holistic structure of the discourse that is its history and context. This study concludes that gender disparity existed in the dialogue between Cameroonian men and women. Cameroonian men were more dominant than the women in the discourse on the central themes involving the Cameroonian presidential election of 2004. The all-female website was more focused on the infrastructural development of Cameroon. Lastly, these findings suggest that future studies should focus on the ways that the Cameroonians and other Diasporic populations utilize the Internet to create alternative discursive spaces for political and social purposes.

On the Forward Edge - Robert D. Loevy - Bog - University Press of America - Plusbog.dk

On the Forward Edge - Robert D. Loevy - Bog - University Press of America - Plusbog.dk

On The Forward Edge is an American Government text-novel. It teaches the basic principles of American Government through the medium of a novelistic account of young people working for change at the time of the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Clark Schooler, a recent college graduate, begins his newspaper career by reporting on the sit-in demonstrations of the early civil rights movement. He covers the efforts of college students to use direct-action and protests to force the racial integration of a movie theater in Baltimore. His editor then sends him to the all-white University of Mississippi to witness and write about the campus riot that takes place when a black student, James Meredith, attempts to attend the University. After covering the 1963 March on Washington, Clark is given a journalistic internship in the Capitol Hill office of United States Senator Thomas H. Kuchel of California. Senator Kuchel is one of the floor leaders for the civil rights bill that will eventually be enacted as the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In his capacity as a Senate aide, Clark observes first hand the inner workings of Congress, particularly the way in which senators supporting racial segregation are using the Senate filibuster to "talk to death" the civil rights bill. Clark works with Senator Kuchel to find 67 votes to "cloture" the civil rights bill and thereby end the filibuster. Clark meets Bonnie Kanecton, a young lawyer working for Senator Everett M. Dirksen of Illinois. Bonnie shows Clark how, through carefully crafted legislative compromises, Senator Dirksen is able to fashion a final version of the bill capable of winning 67 votes for cloture. But the battle is not over until the Supreme Court, in the late fall of 1964, upholds the constitutionality of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

My Life Among the Spirits - Oshada Jagodzinski - Bog - University Press of America - Plusbog.dk

My Life Among the Spirits - Oshada Jagodzinski - Bog - University Press of America - Plusbog.dk

When Oshada Jagodzinski was a child, she had otherworldly visions and a relationship with the dead that only her grandmother, who experienced the same, could understand. Jagodzinski’s astonishing life story details not only those early visions, but also the turmoil she felt before coming to appreciate, and, ultimately, harness her remarkable powers in service of others. Overcoming battles with substance abuse and her own inner demons, she emerged, after much healing work and study, an ordained Spiritualist minister and certified medium. She went on to build a fruitful career helping clients overcome the searing pain of loss, as well as both spiritual and emotional hunger. But Oshada’s story doesn’t end there. Her quest to find spiritual enlightenment led her to the Lakota of Pine Ridge, South Dakota, and the Chipps family’s well-known tradition of Yuwipi medicine men, dating back to Woptura, mentor to Crazy Horse. During her years with the family, she developed a profound understanding of the relationship between humans, other animals, and the earth itself. Oshada Jagodzinski’s memoir takes the reader on a rare and dramatic journey of discovery. She reveals life-changing accidents, a near-fatal encounter with a raging storm, spine-tingling shamanic rituals, a Lakota vision quest, and, ultimately, the very essence of what it is to be alive. Through it all, we learn what it takes to dedicate 45 years in service to the spirit world in order to help others approach a better understanding of death and grief, without anger or fear. For anyone grappling with questions of life and death, substance abuse, spirituality and the wellspring of transformative ritual, My Life Among the Spirits offers immeasurable wisdom and sustenance. For the rest of us, it is simply fascinating.
