The first military action at iSandlwana produces an overwhelming victory. However, in succeeding battles, inferior weaponry results in the Zulu defeat. In the power vacuum a civil war breaks out. Will Cetshwayo’s monarchy be restored? Will Mehlokazulu and Nomguqo be reunited? They plan for their future, but is their love strong enough to survive the chaos and anarchy left by war?

Odd that both murders were seventeen-year-old schoolgirls. The only difference is that one is in a private school, the other in a state school. Is this a copycat killing? Is a serial killer still on the loose? This will be the beginning of an arduous investigation that will take Wallace from Shrewsbury into Devon and then even further to Italy.

It is set in the period of the Cold War, ‘Ban the Bomb’ and lingering austerity. Yet the small pond of UK folk is about to be stirred by breezes blowing from the USA. The folk revival was more advanced over there, and the influx of US visitors, the craving for diversity generated by the Stateside Hi-Fi craze, the irresistible rise of Lonnie Donegan and skiffle, all cleared the path for the UK folk revival proper. It becomes clear with Horizons For Some that the author’s mission is to return its cultural inheritance to a nation that has somehow mislaid it, and may indeed be running the other way in hot denial. It also shows how tradition is not set in stone, but infinitely adaptable. The present volume anatomises how the folk demotic was influenced by the so-called special relationship. In his quiet way, Bill was central to these developments. Sounding the Century is rich in character studies of the remarkable people Bill (and the author) encounter, and wonderfully conveys the joy and absurdity of it all.

Henry Lilley Smith (1788-1859) was born and bred in Southam, Warwickshire. After an apprenticeship to a surgeon-apothecary, he attended Guy’s Hospital (where he was a ‘surgical dresser’ to the distinguished Guy’s surgeon Sir Astley Cooper). After a period of secondment to the Army whilst a student, treating repatriated soldiers following the disastrous battle of Corunna in the Peninsular war, he returned to Guy’s and completed his studies, becoming a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1810. He was to spend his entire professional career in Southam; initially appointed Parish Surgeon, in 1818 he established an ‘Infirmary for the Treatment of Diseases of the Eye and Ear’ in the town, where he provided his services entirely without charge, and then, in 1823, opened a Provident (or ‘self-sufficient’) Dispensary – ‘the first in the Kingdom’ – for the medical care of the local working-class population and their families. Despite sustained professional opposition during Henry Lilley Smith’s lifetime, by the end of the century many more Provident Dispensaries for the working-class had been established, ‘self-sufficiency’ being recognised as ‘best practice’; this principle (with additional financial support from the State) was adopted by Lloyd George in his National Insurance Act of 1911. A Prophet in His Own Country attempts to restore the reputation of a Victorian country surgeon, whose remarkable and innovative schemes for the provision of affordable health care for Warwickshire’s working-class families have been almost completely forgotten.
