Diving Into Heavy Metal! - Philip Kerr - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Diving Into Heavy Metal! - Philip Kerr - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Everybody knows somebody who is a heavy metal fan - fact! If you are already a fan, our hats off to you. If not, let Philip Kerr be your guide as he takes you back through his life and shows how metal has shaped and enhanced every bit. Diving into Heavy Metal! is a journey of discovery, beginning with Philip as a naive child who found himself transfixed by an incredible sound. There tends to be a misrepresentation of heavy metal fans as weird misfits, and many books and films lampoon the subject. Not so in Philip''s book as he invites the reader into the story of a community of fans across the world joined by their love of this extraordinary music. Many aspects of metal are covered as Philip discovers them on his journey: heavy metal, thrash metal, glam metal and more. He''ll show you some of the more major events in music history, take you to a Sabbat gig in Derby, to see Guns N’ Roses in Manchester, to the Clash of the Titans at the Birmingham NEC, and to the artillery barrage otherwise known as Motörhead! He''ll also shed light on some of the murkier parts of the scene as he delves into the world of death metal. Whether you''re a long-time fan, a recent initiate or a complete newbie, Diving into Heavy Metal! has something for everyone. And while the narrative bursts with humour and passion, it''s also above all an honest look at this music that so many fans centre their lives around and without which, Philip says, he isn''t sure where he''d be!

Galley Halfpence - Joshua Cattermole - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Galley Halfpence documents the arrival and circulation, in the Kingdom of England, of silver Soldini of the Republic of Venice between the years 1400-1416. These small coins are very common finds in the UK, and some articles and journal entries have been written on the subject. None have been put into stand-alone print, with most being online. This will be the first. It pulls together the story of the coin’s arrival, using historical sources, but also an examination of the coins themselves, which are often overlooked, with a history of the denomination. There is also a detailed analysis of the finds data, using the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS), and maps using the Geographic Information System (GIS) to map the finds and make conclusions based on the evidence. This book is of use to the academic, economic historians, amateur historians, numismatists (coin collectors) and metal detectorists who find these coins. Thus, containing something for everyone, with many pictures to make easy reading, but not too much that it makes it too informal. There is also interest to people from different countries. The book is in English, and the history of the coins in this country is testament to that. However, the coins are of an Italian provenance. This will neatly cover two bases, so that both Italians and English people can appreciate and use this book. Even if there is a potential language barrier, the pictures, charts and maps are able to be used, even if the reader cannot read English. The image-based nature of much of the book means that an understanding of English is not essential, thus making the book somewhat universal.

Meet Earl Grey, a down-to-earth but down on his luck small-time newspaper reporter. Earl is a bit of an unreliable mess, albeit loveable, if absolutely necessary. Much to Earl''s lack of surprise, he is suddenly assigned a story far worse than his typical mundane day-to-day drudgery. Two days after the earth-shattering arrival of an alleged God in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2005, Earl is appointed as Media Liaison to this extremely ungodlike man. One who has been apparently working miracles after being found in the Arizona desert clad in Armani. With ''God'' now restricted to a hospital room, Earl suddenly finds himself with exclusive access to the Almighty. And with great access comes great demand, as our less-than-intrepid reporter quickly discovers - meeting a feast of both loveable and despicable characters - each one not entirely what they seem. But one thing''s certain, they all want something from this newly arrived God and plan to go through Earl to get it. However, Earl, a lifelong atheist and skeptic, has very different plans and sets about to uncover the true identity of this unusual man before His time on earth runs out. Thrust into global celebrity and a massive mid-life course correction, it isn''t long before Earl is overwhelmed, paranoid, and plagued with crippling self-doubt. But, as usual, he''ll have to sort out the whole mess for himself. Hopefully, before the world comes to an end.

No Traveller Returns - Anne Louise Mathie - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Marie is brought up as a country girl on the West coast of France, but world events catch up with her and life has more in store for her than her family ever expected. As a teenager working in a bar, the Resistance movement makes use of her local knowledge to help Jewish youngsters to escape the Nazi threat. Moving to Paris after the War, she is caught up in the aftermath of the Vel d’Hiv atrocity, and is sent on an investigation by a local Communist newspaper into the heart of Siberia. Back in Paris in the 1950s, she finds herself involved in the French/Algerian crisis and travels to North Africa. Here is the story of a young woman who is passionately interested in justice, not easily intimidated by political rhetoric of any sort, but most of all is touched by the personal relationships she forms with the people she is sent to investigate and those she meets on her travels. She is constantly discovering herself and the complexities of the world around her and, in all three countries, she is fascinated by the members of the Jewish community she meets, as well as those with conflicting political beliefs. Descriptions of the countryside around Les Landes, central Siberia and Algeria will draw you into the lives of the people who lived there in the 1940s and 50s. It will make you want to identify with a young woman, who becomes increasingly self-possessed and independent, despite the tragedies she endures

Jane Austen's Lost Novel - Jane Austen - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Jane Austen's Lost Novel - Jane Austen - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Until the appearance in 1870 of the Memoir written by her nephew J.E. Austen Leigh, very little was known about Jane Austen beyond what could be deduced from her major novels. This had been the family’s choice. Despite this lack of information Deidre Le Faye records that following the acceptance of Jane’s novel Susan for publication in 1803, “according to family tradition, she had composed the plot of another full-length novel”. This, Two Girls of Eighteen , never previously identified as Jane’s, was published in 1806 but at some point apparently suppressed. Only two copies are known to exist - one in the Deutsch Nationalbibliothek and the one from which the present text has been transcribed, which came from a house that Jane knew and is mentioned by her in A Collection of Letters . Two Girls of Eighteen has a divided structure, involving two sisters, Charlotte and Julia, each of whom is given her own story, the one a Romance partly based on Richardson’s Clarissa , the other a Gothic confection - both set in contemporary England. Jane appears to be testing in this the capabilities of such forms for expressing what she was trying to achieve. Through the character of Charlotte, who is attempting to write a novel, she deliberates at length the sort of thing that she herself might write. Her reflections on such subjects as medicine, law, the rights of women, etc take us below the glossy surface of the major novels and show us the complex web of thought that lies beneath.

Against Sacrifice - Henry P Wynn - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Against Sacrifice - Henry P Wynn - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

This book is directed at the sort of raw utilitarian approach to making hard choices in public life which uses in one form or another the idea of the cash value of a human life. This arises with the use of so-called QALYs in Health Economics and spending caps in Health and Safety at work. These are often forced choices, forced by ethical decisions taken at the centre but then outsourced to the harsh frontiers of ethics. They go hand-in-hand with pernicious attitudes which blame the victims or thinks of them simply as collateral damage. The ethics of war should not be used in peacetime, with loaded words like “proportionality”. The response should be to value life itself and the human qualities of empathy and imagination, requiring us to listen to the narratives of victims. The best option is to remove the hard choices wherever they occur but if that is impossible give generous and swift compensation. The central message is that it cannot be part of the “public good” to sacrifice someone for the public good. That happens with vaccination, but in the long run is not acceptable. We need safer vaccines, better intensive care and so on. These ideas can be captured in the terms “duty of care” and “deliberative democracy”. Every regulator and agency which has power over human life should have duty of care written into its constitution and we need new forms of democracy to debate the issues, particularly within communities. The essay draws on the community-based and experimental ideas of the great American Pragmatist, John Dewey.

Secret Lives - Ernie Savage - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Secret Lives - Ernie Savage - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

A novella and five short stories set in the middle class England of the author; even there parts of some peoples’ lives are kept from others. Many people have investigated their family history; in the early days, this meant visits to public record offices, which for some involved travel to other towns. Some were hoping, or fearing, to find skeletons in cupboards. Others have found cousins of distant kinship engaged in the same investigation. Both these themes come together in The Secret Sits a novella spanning the centuries; the details of the life of a late nineteenth century Yorkshire businessman, who was airbrushed out of family history, because of a scandal, are finally revealed when his family gains access to the censuses of the period. The scandal caused a rift in the family and one branch may have lost an inheritance. The other parts of the work are short stories. In Roy a bombastic self confident fourth former in a 1950s grammar school who disappears into obscurity. In Helena a rather lonely, late middle aged woman in a Midlands town may have found love when she meets a charming, handsome, but somewhat secretive man. In The Lost Phone a chance encounter leads a widowed man to find two sisters searching for family secrets; they become his new family. The Strange Tale of Walter Greenough is about a man who tries to create his own secret life, but is unmasked. Sue’s Caff is a busy city centre eatery with a largely working class clientele; Sue describes a notable day when secrets were shared, though one man is brought to a sort of poetic justice.

The Little (illustrated) Book of Operational Forecasting - Dr Steve Morlidge - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The Little (illustrated) Book of Operational Forecasting - Dr Steve Morlidge - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

This is a guidebook about short term Operational Forecasting – the sort that is done to determine how much product you need to source or how many people you need to draft in to meet customer demand. It is organized under 5 headings: 1.The purpose of operational forecasting 2.Understanding demand 3.Forecasting methods 4.Understanding forecast performance 5.Managing forecast performance. The first two sections and part of section three are essential reading for anyone involved in or responsible for operational forecasting. The rest of the book is most helpful for practitioners. The aim is to produce something that provides a useful introduction to operational forecasting for both practitioners and their bosses by filling in the gap that lies between a naïve common sense understanding of short term forecasting and the complex technicalities of mathematical forecasting techniques. The authors background as a self-taught business orientated forecasting nerd with limited mathematical expertise qualifies who tell it the way it is makes him well qualified to fill this gap. The book has been designed to be simple but not simplistic, using short and to the point learning points supported by clear graphics. It is technically sound but also highly practical. The hope is that it will help create a common language to help people talk intelligently about forecasting and help stop people doing dumb stuff – which is where most of the potential for improvement lies. It will also help people design good forecast processes and informed software purchasing decisions. In doing so it will help people realize that forecasting is important and that investing in people as well as software will generate enormous benefits for many businesses.

“We’ve ended up joining the EEC on French terms which involve paying out a fortune to subsidise their farmers. Now we must make the best of it. That means playing it as dirty at Brussels as the rest of them.” “Only Labour can sort out the mess the Heath Government has made, and get this country working again.” “A vote for Labour is a vote for decisions in favour of a foreign power, contrary to the national interest. Therefore, it’s a vote for treason.” “The national duty must be to replace the man who has deprived Parliament of its sole right to make the laws and impose the taxes of the country. If you want to do it, you can.” “I now have proof that the electorate was swindled on Thursday. By tomorrow night, it will all be coming out.” February 1974……political controversy rages Inflation is over 20%. Conservative Prime Minister Ted Heath is powerless in the face of strikes which have put industry onto a three-day week. The year before, Heath had finally got Britain into Europe, causing splits in both the Conservative and Labour parties. Passions run high in argument. In an attempt to get back in charge, Heath calls a snap General Election. He fails – in the new hung parliament, Labour have a few more seats. But he doesn’t resign and let Labour’s Harold Wilson take over. He looks to be toughing it out. Why? Because a committed young man is on his way back to Britain with evidence of an illegal conspiracy supporting Labour. If he returned, Labour would be discredited. Amidst a huge constitutional crisis, public opinion would move to head to head confrontation and violence. The strikes would continue. The British economy would collapse. But he doesn’t return – because of an unforeseen TRAGEDY which events earlier this year recall. See how determined young people then made a difference and built their own lives. Take the lessons for NOW, as we approach another hotly contested Election.
