Under the Enemy Sky - Peter D. Webb - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

My granddaughter was studying recent history at school, a year or two back and the course of her studies were embracing the events of the Second World War; Classroom activities included an exhibition of War time photos and relics, that might be gathered together and I was incumbent on relatives etc, familiar with the era, to see what they might have in the loft! I was able to contribute a Tin hat (steel helmet in modern day parlance) and a gas mask, both inherited from my Father who was a stalwart member of the A. R. P at that time. More about the A. R. P later. I was also asked to provide a brief account of my re-collections of the period, which, no doubt, would be included in any essays on the subject to complete her studies. I later realised that I was 5 years of age in 1939 and 11 years when the conflict finally ended in 1945, there was also the ''benefit'' of living in Croydon, for most of the duration, I might have a great deal more to recall than this brief summary for the classroom, on two sheets of paper.I began to realise that memories, long forgotten, buried in time, were coming to the fore and if she was writing an essay. I might be able to write a book. In those early days my home town was near enough centre stage to much of the aerial action during the Battle of Britain and the ongoing conflict, above our heads, over the years. The area endured endless overflying of enemy raiders, attacking targets near and far, night and day, and was at the receiving end of attacks from V 1 and V 2 capons during the later stages of the War; it was also an area to witness the responding hordes of Allied bombers as they over flew us, from bases far inland, reaching out to targets in the Nazi heartland. I set about writing this account in earnest.

The Folate Story: A vitamin under the microscope - Victor Hoffbrand - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The Folate Story: A vitamin under the microscope - Victor Hoffbrand - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The story of folate (vitamin B9) is one of outstanding achievements which have advanced major areas of medical practice and also of scandals of international significance. Folate was the only one of the 13 vitamins to have been discovered by a woman, Lucy Wills. She showed in1931 that the yeast extract Marmite could cure the anaemia of pregnant women in Bombay. The vitamin, first isolated from spinach, was subsequently shown not only to correct anemia but also to prevent the birth of babies with the severe defect spina bifida. The first effective anti-bacterial drugs and anti-cancer drugs were anti-folates. The scandals in the story of folate include the opposition, mainly by men, to women becoming doctors, the lack of any public recognition of Lucy Wills’s achievements, the vicious treatment the British Government gave to Waldemar Haffkine who had made for them the world’s first two anti-bacterial vaccines and saved millions of lives, and the incorrect use of folic acid to treat pernicious anaemia leading to irreversible paralysis. The most significant scandal, the failure of worldwide fortification of the diet with folic acid. This catastrophe allows thousands of babies to be born each year with the major birth defect spina bifida ,which could be prevented by this cheap, safe public health measure, already mandated for in over 80 countries, in North America since 1998.

Badger, Boomer and Bathroom Bob - John Wilson - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The befuddled and beleaguered dean of a small, struggling law school is confronted by the apparent embezzlement of financial aid funds, the murder of two students under bizarre circumstances, the rape of a young secretary, declining applications for admission (no surprise, under the circumstances) and an unhappy, mutinous faculty. Predictably, his job is in jeopardy. The institution where he works – improbably named Crabshaw School of the Law and located in a renovated brassiere factory – is populated by a quirky, engaging group of professorial misfits with student-conferred nicknames like Boomer, Junker, Mattress Head and Bathroom Bob. The dean must deal with them and also with Allison Fetherheft, a forbidding, immensely obese female Provost, who the students usually refer to as Dean Dreadnaught. The crimes and problems are interrelated, but the clues to their resolution point in different directions – if they point anywhere at all. Twisting and turning, punctuated by bouts of unexpected humor and farce, the story rollicks along to its final resolution.Badger, Boomer and Bathroom Bob is a pacy murder mystery, shot through with satire and humour, that leads to an unanticipated and startling conclusion. Author John Wilson reads widely in a number of genres. This book is a must-read for anyone who enjoyed watching Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau in The Pink Panther, as well as fans of crime and suspense fiction.
