Linear Algebra - James R. (sweet Briar College Kirkwood - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Linear Algebra, James R. Kirkwood and Bessie H. Kirkwood, 978-1-4987-7685-1, K29751 Shelving Guide: Mathematics This text has a major focus on demonstrating facts and techniques of linear systems that will be invaluable in higher mathematics and related fields. A linear algebra course has two major audiences that it must satisfy. It provides an important theoretical and computational tool for nearly every discipline that uses mathematics. It also provides an introduction to abstract mathematics. This book has two parts. Chapters 1–7 are written as an introduction. Two primary goals of these chapters are to enable students to become adept at computations and to develop an understanding of the theory of basic topics including linear transformations. Important applications are presented. Part two, which consists of Chapters 8–14, is at a higher level. It includes topics not usually taught in a first course, such as a detailed justification of the Jordan canonical form, properties of the determinant derived from axioms, the Perron–Frobenius theorem and bilinear and quadratic forms. Though users will want to make use of technology for many of the computations, topics are explained in the text in a way that will enable students to do these computations by hand if that is desired. Key features include: - - Chapters 1–7 may be used for a first course relying on applications - - - Chapters 8–14 offer a more advanced, theoretical course - - - Definitions are highlighted throughout - - - MATLAB® and R Project tutorials in the appendices - - - Exercises span a range from simple computations to fairly direct abstract exercises - - - Historical notes motivate the presentation -

Removing the Barriers to Efficient Manufacturing - Daniel L. Ferguson - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Removing the Barriers to Efficient Manufacturing - Daniel L. Ferguson - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

W. Edwards Deming’s central premise was that improvements in product quality would increase productivity, improve competitive position, and help ensure long-term survival. Point 12 of his landmark 14 Points for Management says that management’s job is to remove the barriers that keep people from taking pride in their work. That’s exactly what this book is about. Shedding new light on Deming’s 14 Points, Removing the Barriers to Efficient Manufacturing: Real-World Applications of Lean Productivity outlines time-tested organizational structures and methods to help you reduce variability and deliver high-quality products consistently. It describes the financial losses that can occur as a result of variability and details the specific activities management must engage in to avoid these losses and ensure long-term success. Instead of taking you on a "random walk," the book supplies each manufacturing group in your organization with straightforward directions for creating a smooth-running facility with reduced variability. It includes "work assignments" in each chapter that, if completed in the order presented, will guide you through the creation of the Model Vision for your manufacturing facility. It also: - - Covers key topics on working with people, including training and retraining - Supplies pointers for working with unions - Considers Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED) - Describes how to put it all together with action plans The book includes a write up on Deming’s famous Red Bead Experiment as well as an introduction to statistical process control techniques in the appendices. Filled with real-world examples and a case study to illustrate essential concepts, the book arms you with the insight and common-sense approaches required to build on Deming’s fundamental principles and consistently deliver high-quality products that instill a sense of pride in your workforce.

Teenage Runaways - Laurie Schaffner - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Teenage Runaways - Laurie Schaffner - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Teenage Runaways: Broken Hearts and “Bad Attitudes” uncovers the perspectives of actual teenage runaways to help professionals, parents, and youths understand the widespread social problem of “last resort” behavior. You’ll learn the real reasons teenagers run away, and you’ll hear the anguished voices of the teenage runaways themselves, shattering the myth that only bad kids runaway. Teenage Runaways deflates popular misconceptions that runaways are incorrigible delinquents who want to leave home, that they make impulsive decisions to leave their families, and that they wish to never return. Reporting on a qualitative study of 26 runaways in a shelter in New England, this book reveals that many teenaged runaways leave home in search of safety and freedom from what they consider abusive treatment, whether physical, sexual, or emotional. In Teenage Runaways, you will discover valuable information about who these children are, why they are running away, and what you can do to help. Specifically, you will read about: - - why teenagers say they run away - - running away as “last resort behavior” - - what the experience of running away is like - - hope and desire for reconciliation with parents and family - - running away as a dynamic emotional experience for youths which reflects changes in their social bonds with peers, family, and adults in the educational, legal, and medical systems - - “emotional capital” from a heavily regulated authoritative environment - Teenage Runaways provides you with a new understanding of teens in trouble to assist you in providing services to this needy and vulnerable population. First-hand accounts reveal the emotional motivations behind decisions to run away, such as 14 years-old Isabel who gives a painful account of what severe physical and sexual abuse feels like to an adolescent victim. Amy, also 14, tells her story of living with a mother who was extremely strict and betrayed her.

Organizational Cultures and the Management of Nuclear Technology - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Organizational Cultures and the Management of Nuclear Technology - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Nuclear technology has been an organizing premise of the international system since 1945. Eight countries have officially acknowledged the possession of nuclear weapons. Many countries have harnessed the atom for electricity generation and other civilian uses. Roughly 440 commercial nuclear reactors operate in thirty countries providing 14 percent of the world''s electricity. Volatile oil prices and concerns about climate change have led newly emerging economies in Asia to express keen interest in using nuclear energy to meet growing energy demands. Since the basic technological apparatus for both civilian and military nuclear programs is the same, there are concerns about the potential spread of dual-use technology. The future stability of the international order depends on the responsible management of their nuclear assets by nuclear powers. The relationship between civilian authorities and the military takes on special significance in states with nuclear weapons or near-weapon capability. The constitutional balance of powers, the delegation of authority during wartime and peace, influences from public opinion and bureaucratic structures on the formulation of doctrine, crisis management, and communications with the international media and the general public are influenced by civil-military relations and organizational culture. This volume will be of broad interest to scholars of civil-military relations, political science, and political sociology.

Algebraic Number Theory and Fermat's Last Theorem - David Tall - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Algebraic Number Theory and Fermat's Last Theorem - David Tall - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Updated to reflect current research, Algebraic Number Theory and Fermat’s Last Theorem, Fourth Edition introduces fundamental ideas of algebraic numbers and explores one of the most intriguing stories in the history of mathematics—the quest for a proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem. The authors use this celebrated theorem to motivate a general study of the theory of algebraic numbers from a relatively concrete point of view. Students will see how Wiles’s proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem opened many new areas for future work. New to the Fourth Edition - Provides up-to-date information on unique prime factorization for real quadratic number fields, especially Harper’s proof that Z(√14) is Euclidean - Presents an important new result: Mihăilescu’s proof of the Catalan conjecture of 1844 - Revises and expands one chapter into two, covering classical ideas about modular functions and highlighting the new ideas of Frey, Wiles, and others that led to the long-sought proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem - Improves and updates the index, figures, bibliography, further reading list, and historical remarks Written by preeminent mathematicians Ian Stewart and David Tall, this text continues to teach students how to extend properties of natural numbers to more general number structures, including algebraic number fields and their rings of algebraic integers. It also explains how basic notions from the theory of algebraic numbers can be used to solve problems in number theory.

Smoking, Drinking, and Drug Use in Young Adulthood - Lloyd D. Johnston - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Smoking, Drinking, and Drug Use in Young Adulthood - Lloyd D. Johnston - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Why do some young adults substantially change their patterns of smoking, drinking, or illicit drug use after graduating from high school? In this book, the authors show that leaving high school and leaving home create new freedoms that are linked to increases in the use of cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine. They also show that marriage, pregnancy, and parenthood create new responsibilities that are linked to decreases in drug use. The research is based on more than 33,000 young people followed from high school through young adulthood by the nationwide Monitoring the Future project. Every two years, participants reported on their drug use, as well as their schooling, employment, military service, living arrangements, marriages, pregnancies, parenthood, and even their divorces. The unique qualities of this research--large nationally representative samples, follow-ups extending up to 14 years beyond high school, and multiple approaches to analysis and data presentation--allowed the examination of several important influences simultaneously, while retaining much of the rich detail encountered in the real world. On the whole, the results are encouraging, suggesting that the potentials for change and improvement during the transition to adulthood are as important as the detrimental effects of problem behavior in adolescence. This research is a "must" read for anyone concerned with how new freedoms and responsibilities impact adolescents, young adults, and the use of licit and illicit drugs.

Communication and Aging - James D. Robinson - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Communication and Aging - James D. Robinson - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

This text employs a communication perspective to examine the aging process and the ability of individuals to adapt successfully to aging. It continues the groundbreaking work of the first edition, emphasizing a life-span approach toward understanding the social interaction that occurs during later life. The edition provides a comprehensive update on the existing and emerging research within communication and aging studies and considers such topics as notions of successful aging, positive and negative stereotypes toward older adults, and health communication issues. It raises awareness of the barriers facing elderly people in conversation and the importance such conversations have in elderly people''s lives. The impact of nonrelational processes, such as hearing loss, are considered as they impact relationships with others and affect the ability to age successfully. The book is organized into 14 chapters. Each chapter is written so that the reader is presented with an exhaustive review of the pertinent and recent literature from the social sciences. As in the first edition, when the literature is empirically based, the communicative ramifications are then discussed. Readers of this volume will gain greater understanding of the importance of their communicative relationships and how significant they remain across the life span. Developed for students in communication, psychology, nursing, social gerontology, sociology, and related areas, Communication and Aging provides important insights on communication to all who are affected by the aging process.
