An Anthropological Defense of God - Lloyd E. Sandelands - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

An Anthropological Defense of God - Lloyd E. Sandelands - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Anthropology--the study of man--is unlike every other study because humans are its subject. And because we are its subject we cannot manage the philosophic and emotional distance necessary to see clearly. Unable to stand apart from ourselves to comprehend our own truth, we are compelled to assume things about ourselves that we cannot prove. In a word, anthropology begins in faith. Lloyd Sandelands approaches the anthropological quest for God by comparing the faiths of modern social science and of the Christian church. Sandelands describes the social scientific faith articulated by Hume, Kant, Rousseau, Schopenhauer among others, as an imagined state of nature that sees the individual as solitary, self-sufficient, and contented. By contrast, the Christian faith unites us as male and female persons in one flesh before God. The challenge in the author''s view is to decide which faith to build our lives upon. Sandelands poses questions about the basic terms of human study--what is a person, and what is society?--and how do the different metaphysics of science and Church lead to different anthropologies? A worthwhile anthropology must address the questions of what constitutes human freedom, desire, and the nature of the good. Comparing the answers given by science and by the church, he finds that the one paradoxically denies freedom, denies want, and denies the good, while the other affirms freedom, affirms want, and affirms the good. Between these two anthropologies he finds there is but one true study of man. A companion to Sandelands'' Man and Nature in God , his most recent book, An Anthropological Defense of God attempts to establish that an anthropology in God succeeds where an anthropology in science fails. Such success is measured not only by its ideas and findings about man, but even more by its wisdom in teaching us how to live.

The Social Anthropology of the Nation-State - Lloyd Fallers - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Social Anthropology of the Nation-State - Lloyd Fallers - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

The contemporary nation-state is popular in that it rests upon mutual identification between rulers and ruled. Such identification is based upon common primordial qualities that are felt to be ancient, inherent, given, however new they may in fact be: language, territory, culture, race. But the nation-state has also produced far more rigorous authoritarianisms and frequently less tolerance than old empires.Anthropology, the "study of man," for all the immodesty of its name, has concerned itself almost exclusively with people in small groups: bands, tribal segments, village communities, and, recently, urban neighborhoods, schools, and work places. Social anthropology has been the science of the socio-cultural microcosm and has developed a method and style of inquiry appropriate to this task. This volume uniquely applies the techniques of social anthropology to the study of the nation-state.This discussion of states and their microcosms does not simply celebrate social anthropological research and the understanding it yields, but also illustrates its contribution, in combination with other modes of investigation, to the understanding of contemporary international issues. In particular, Fallers says it is necessary to place the microcosms historically, for those who inhabit them act within history as experienced, both directly by themselves and, at further remove, by their predecessors and contemporaries. This classic volume offers a different perspective for understanding international issues.

Smoking, Drinking, and Drug Use in Young Adulthood - Lloyd D. Johnston - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Smoking, Drinking, and Drug Use in Young Adulthood - Lloyd D. Johnston - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Why do some young adults substantially change their patterns of smoking, drinking, or illicit drug use after graduating from high school? In this book, the authors show that leaving high school and leaving home create new freedoms that are linked to increases in the use of cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine. They also show that marriage, pregnancy, and parenthood create new responsibilities that are linked to decreases in drug use. The research is based on more than 33,000 young people followed from high school through young adulthood by the nationwide Monitoring the Future project. Every two years, participants reported on their drug use, as well as their schooling, employment, military service, living arrangements, marriages, pregnancies, parenthood, and even their divorces. The unique qualities of this research--large nationally representative samples, follow-ups extending up to 14 years beyond high school, and multiple approaches to analysis and data presentation--allowed the examination of several important influences simultaneously, while retaining much of the rich detail encountered in the real world. On the whole, the results are encouraging, suggesting that the potentials for change and improvement during the transition to adulthood are as important as the detrimental effects of problem behavior in adolescence. This research is a "must" read for anyone concerned with how new freedoms and responsibilities impact adolescents, young adults, and the use of licit and illicit drugs.

The Crusade Against Slavery - Louis Filler - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Perhaps no other crusade in the history of the U.S. provoked so much passion and fury as the struggle over slavery. Many of the problems that were a part of that great debate are still with us. Louis Filler has brought together much information both known and new on those who organized to defeat slavery. He has also re-examined the anti-slavery movement''s ideals, heroes, and martyrs with historical perspective and precision.Contrary to popular belief, the anti-slavery movement was far from united. It included abolitionists as well as a variety of reformers whose activities place them among the anti-slavery forces. These included men as different in background and temperament as William Lloyd Garrison and John Quincy Adams. Portraits of the many protagonists, their hardships, and their quarrels with Southerners and Northerners alike, bring to life this exciting and tumultuous period.Filler also examines the many related reform movements that characterized the period: feminism, spiritualism, utopian societies, and educational reform. The volume traces the relationship of the antislavery movement to abolition and probes their connection with the several reforms that dominated the period. He brilliantly recaptures a sense of the contemporary consequences of the reformers efforts. This is an absorbing and important survey of the problems - political, social, and economic - that made this period so crucial in the history of the U.S.

Social Status in the City - Bernice Neugarten - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Social Status in the City - Bernice Neugarten - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Social Status in the City presents a scientific method for measuring social status in urban settings - the Index of Urban Status (IUS). The authors show how the index and the concepts of status on which it is based were derived by describing the procedures used in studying the social structure of a particular Midwestern city. Richard P. Coleman modified the IUS when he was employed in commerce research studies of social class phenomena in American cities.A social class is a group of people who are judged by members of the community as equal to one another in social prestige. They are believed to be either superior or inferior in prestige and acceptability to other groups who constitute the social classes that are below or above them. By this definition, Yankee City, Deep South, Jonesville, Kansas City - and presumably every community in the U.S. - can all be described as having social class systems. This book is a case study aimed at larger theoretical importance. The study should be considered in the context of sociology''s concerns with problems of urban stratification, the characteristics of various social class groups, and the ways these groups change over time. In this context, the book makes a contribution to social science methods as well as observation. The authors have followed in the tradition of W. Lloyd Warner and others who have attempted to understand the status structures of whole communities. This classic volume has brilliantly stood the test of time.

Humane Politics and Methods of Inquiry - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Humane Politics and Methods of Inquiry - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Ithiel de Sola Pool was a distinguished scholar of the political process, and one of the most original thinkers in the development of an integrated social science. This volume focuses upon his contributions to the development of research methods that deepen our understanding of human behaviour. The book is divided into five parts treating the analysis of communications, computer simulation, forecasting, network theory, and the social sciences in political contexts. The first part considers the problems and possibilities of analysis raised by the unprecedented quantity of data made available by widespread and improved communications technology; what should be counted and how should inferences be made. Part two explores computer simulation in the study of presidential election patterns and how it can provide in-depth analyses of crisis situations in history. Part three focuses on strategies for predicting the future of international politics and methods to forecast the impacts of new communications technologies, while part four offers a rigorous analysis of domestic and global contact networks and the so-called "small world" phenomenon. Part five is concerned with external challenges to the use of social science to create more humane politics, including the question of value neutrality, ideology, "deconstructive" critical theory, and threats by government to the health of universities. In a concluding essay Lloyd Etheredge draws upon Pool''s work to discuss several new ways in which the methods treated in this volume can be applied to contemporary social change.

Decorative and Innovative use of Concrete - Graham F. True - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Decorative and Innovative use of Concrete - Graham F. True - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

This is a broadly chronological account of the decorative and innovative use of Portland cement-based concrete. Contrary to the oft-held belief that concrete is a dull material that is used unimaginatively, this book demonstrates that it can be used in an exciting and inspiring way while benefiting from being a highly durable building material. After tracing the decorative use of concrete back several thousand years, its development is followed into the 20th century with the invention of Portland cement and its subsequent use in vast volumes. As concrete was used more widely, it also was used more creatively and accounts are included of some of the early exponents of the material such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Nervi, Lubetkin, and Arup. The brilliance of these and other designers and engineers has provided a legacy of economy and form that is akin to today's current vogue of minimalism. The variety of scale and form is remarkable and after considering decorative processes and techniques, the book moves into the sphere of art, demonstrating the flexibility of the material. The book contains a wealth of illustrations, and in the later chapters the author considers the work of selected designers and then presents a large number of examples from around the world. The final chapter looks ahead, taking in current developments in high strength concrete that allow thin, slender applications, also novel self-cleaning concrete and even transparent concrete!Of one thing we can be certain - concrete is not dull!

Cosmopolis - Howard Mansfield - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Cosmopolis - Howard Mansfield - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

The twentieth century saw a grand procession of promises for the city. The great modern architect Le Corbusier dictated cities of glittering white towers planted in green parks, Frank Lloyd proposed cities with no downtown, cities spread across the countryside with each family on its homestead, and skyscraper utopians of the 1920s promised paradise on the one-hundredth floor with our airplane hangared next door. One thing was sure: the city of tomorrow would put to shame the city of yesterday. Another thing was certain, too: we would be happier, more peaceful (and productive) people. Here is Le Corbusier: "Free, man tends to geometry." And if we followed the "radiant harmony" of his geometry, the world’s cities could become "irresistible forces stimulating collective enthusiasm, collective action, and general joy and pride, and inconsequence individual happiness everywhere . . . the modern world would emerge . . . and would beam around, powerful, happy, believing." There were others who promised deliverance through their brands of architecture: the right angle, the curvilinear road in the park, the tower of glass. Each fervently preached that his was the magic geometry that, like tumblers on a lock, would open the way to the good life. Cosmopolis is a pattern book of expectations, generously illustrated with a gathering of plans from the City Beautiful to the Italian Futurists, The Cité Industrielle, World’s Fair utopias, science fiction visions, and the grand plans of the Moderns. Cosmopolis is the story of the ideal city we never achieved, and the great plans that went into making-over precincts of our urban language.

Jacques Derrida - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Vladimir Mikhailovitch Bekhterev was a pioneering Russian neurologist, psychiatrist, and psychologist. A highly esteemed rival of Ivan Pavlov, his achievements in the areas of personality, clinical psychology, and political and social psychology were recognized and acclaimed throughout the world. Publication of the complete text of Collective Reflexology brings to the English-speaking world this brilliant scientist''s final theoretical statements on how reflexological principles, which he had been developing over a quarter century, can be extended far beyond analysis of the individual personality. Bekhterev''s work grows out of his interest in group psychology and suggestion. This concept of the reflex is much broader than Pavlov''s. It is applicable to every variety of life. Bekhterev compared his own analyses to those of other European thinkers such as Comte, LeBon, and Sorokin. Such analyses strained against the official Marxist-Leninist doctrines of the era. Bekhterev died in 1927, allegedly of poisoning by Stalin''s henchman. As with many scientists during the Soviet era, his legacy was suppressed. In the normal course of events his name would have been as well known as that of Freud, Pavlov or, more lately, B.F. Skinner. This first publication of Bekhterev''s great work in English fills a void in the fields of psychology, sociology, and the history of science. V.M. Bekhterev was director of the Military Medical Academy in St. Petersburg and founded there its Psychoneurological Institute. Among his many books are Suggestion: Its Role in Social Life (available from Transaction) and The Subject Matter and Goals of Social Psychology. Lloyd H. Strickland is professor of psychology at Carleton University. He is the author of numerous journal articles and editor of Directions in Soviet Social Psychology and Soviet and Western Perspectives in Social Psychology."Bekhterev (1857-
