The Fracking Debate - Jonathan M. Fisk - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

The disputes around fracking, and oil and gas policy, follow a long tradition of complicated intergovernmental relationships. Proponents argue that fracking supports new and well-paying jobs, revitalizes state and local economies, and that it can help replace reliance on other fossil fuels. Skeptics and opponents contend that oil and gas production via fracking contaminates air and water resources, causes earthquakes, and can ruin the character of many communities. Examining the intergovernmental politics of the first oil and natural gas boom of the 21 st century, The Fracking Debate, Second edition offers a holistic understanding of the politics that characterize oil and natural gas operations, including why local governments are challenging their state’s preemptive authority, in order to initiate a larger conversation about improving intergovernmental relationships. Author Jonathan Fisk presents a novel argument about the ways in which local, state, regional, and national approaches to governance of shale gas development can work together to reduce conflict and forward the interests of the communities exposed to development, asking important questions such as: - - What state structures govern state-local relations? What state institutions impact and shape oil and gas production? What is the policymaking context in the state? - - - What are the costs and benefits of hydraulic fracturing at the national, state, and local levels? How are risks and rewards distributed within states? - - - What local policies have challenged the state, and why would local communities challenge the state? - The result is a book that demonstrates that when stakeholders acknowledge their interdependencies and one another’s expertise, they create, design, and implement more responsive, strategic, and targeted public policies. The Fracking Debate, Second edition will be required reading for courses on oil and gas policy in the United States, environmental politics, and domestic energy politics, as well as a vital reference for practitioners and policymakers working in these fields.

Solar Powered Charging Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Paris Agreement on Climate Change adopted on December 12, 2015 is a voluntary effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In order to reach the goals of this agreement, there is a need to generate electricity without greenhouse gas emissions and to electrify transportation. An infrastructure of SPCSs can help accomplish both of these transitions. Globally, expenditures associated with the generation, transmission, and use of electricity are more than one trillion dollars per year. Annual transportation expenditures are also more than one trillion dollars per year. Almost everyone will be impacted by these changes in transportation, solar power generation, and smart grid developments. The benefits of reducing greenhouse gas emissions will differ with location, but all will be impacted. This book is about the benefits associated with adding solar panels to parking lots to generate electricity, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and provide shade and shelter from rain and snow. The electricity can flow into the power grid or be used to charge electric vehicles (EVs). Solar powered charging stations (SPCSs) are already in many parking lots in many countries of the world. The prices of solar panels have decreased recently, and about 30% of the new U.S. electrical generating capacity in 2015 was from solar energy. More than one million EVs are in service in 2016, and there are significant benefits associated with a convenient charging infrastructure of SPCSs to support transportation with electric vehicles. Solar Powered Charging Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles: A Sustainable Development aims to share information on pathways from our present situation to a world with a more sustainable transportation system with EVs, SPCSs, a modernized smart power grid with energy storage, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and better urban air quality. Covering 200 million parking spaces with solar panels can generate about 1/4 of the electricity that was generated in 2014 in the United States. Millions of EVs with 20 to 50 kWh of battery storage can help with the transition to wind and solar power generation through owners responding to time-of-use prices. Written for all audiences, high school and college teachers and students, those in industry and government, and those involved in community issues will benefit by learning more about the topics addressed in the book. Those working with electrical power and transportation, who will be in the middle of the transition, will want to learn about all of the challenges and developments that are addressed here.

Economic Analysis for Ecosystem-Based Management - Daniel Holland - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Economic Analysis for Ecosystem-Based Management - Daniel Holland - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Ocean and coastal management regimes are increasingly subject to competing demands from stakeholders. Regulations must not only address fishing, recreation, and shipping, but also sand and gravel mining, gas pipelines, harbor/port development, offshore wind and tidal energy facilities, liquefied natural gas terminals, offshore aquaculture, and desalinization plants. The growing variety and intensity of ocean and coastal uses increases the call for a more holistic, comprehensive, and coordinated management approach that recognizes the often complex relationships between natural and human systems. For both economist and non-economist audiences, this book describes ways in which economic analysis can be an important tool to inform and improve ecosystem-based management (EBM). Topics include modeling economic impacts, benefit-cost analysis, spatial considerations in EBM, incentives and human behaviors, and accounting for uncertainty in policy analysis. Throughout the book the authors elucidate the different kinds of insights which can be gained from the use of different economic tools. In this rigorous and accessible work, the authors defy the conventional stereotype that economic perspectives necessarily favor the greatest commercial development. Instead, they demonstrate how comprehensive economic analyses consider the full range of potential services offered by marine and coastal ecosystems, including the conservation of biodiversity and creation of recreational opportunities.

Robust Control Systems with Genetic Algorithms - Mo Jamshidi - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Robust Control Systems with Genetic Algorithms - Mo Jamshidi - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

In recent years, new paradigms have emerged to replace-or augment-the traditional, mathematically based approaches to optimization. The most powerful of these are genetic algorithms (GA), inspired by natural selection, and genetic programming, an extension of GAs based on the optimization of symbolic codes. Robust Control Systems with Genetic Algorithms builds a bridge between genetic algorithms and the design of robust control systems. After laying a foundation in the basics of GAs and genetic programming, it demonstrates the power of these new tools for developing optimal robust controllers for linear control systems, optimal disturbance rejection controllers, and predictive and variable structure control. It also explores the application of hybrid approaches: how to enhance genetic algorithms and programming with fuzzy logic to design intelligent control systems. The authors consider a variety of applications, such as the optimal control of robotic manipulators, flexible links and jet engines, and illustrate a multi-objective, genetic algorithm approach to the design of robust controllers with a gasification plant case study. The authors are all masters in the field and clearly show the effectiveness of GA techniques. Their presentation is your first opportunity to fully explore this cutting-edge approach to robust optimal control system design and exploit its methods for your own applications.

Micro- and Nano-Scale Sensors and Transducers - Ezzat G. Bakhoum - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Micro- and Nano-Scale Sensors and Transducers - Ezzat G. Bakhoum - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

The rapidly emerging fields of nanotechnology and nano-fabrication have enabled the creation of new sensors with dramatic improvements in sensitivity and range, along with substantial miniaturization. And, although there are many books on nanotechnology, recent advances in micro and nano-scale sensors and transducers are not adequately represented in most books. This book fills that gap. Micro- and Nano-Scale Sensors and Transducers provides a summary of the state of the art in sensor and transducer technology. Teaching you how to make more informed selections of sensors or transducers for particular applications, it describes the differences between new sensor and transducer technologies based on nanotechnology and nano-fabrication and the older or "classical" sensor technologies. The book presents the new structures of pressure sensors being used in such applications as mechanical pressure sensing, gas pressure sensing, and atmospheric pressure sensing. It illustrates the novel structures and characteristics of new motion and acceleration sensors. Describing highly sensitive miniature gas and smoke sensors based on nano-structured electrodes, the book presents novel techniques for detecting atmospheric moisture and moisture inside small electronic components. It also covers applications of optoelectronic and photonic sensors. The book examines multi-purpose biological and chemical analysis devices where each device is fully contained in one integrated circuit (Lab on a Chip) as well as other advanced chemical and biological sensors. It describes electric, magnetic, and RF / microwave sensors and their applications and also considers integrated sensor / actuator units and special-purpose sensors. Each chapter in the book includes a set of quizzes / short questions, along with answers.

Energy And Environment In The Transition Economies - William Chandler - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Energy And Environment In The Transition Economies - William Chandler - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Energy and environmental issues in the former Soviet sphere rank as global policy priorities for three reasons. First, civilian application of military nuclear materials multiplies the threat of terrorism. Second, Russian and Caspian oil resources affect world markets, Western energy security, and regional stability. Third, climate change may become a global challenge commensurate with the Cold War, and the transition economies--the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe--offer the world''s largest and cheapest near-term opportunities for curbing greenhouse gas emissions. Yet, the region remains unprepared to deal with these issues, and Western assistance has failed to help. A "second generation" of reform efforts is needed, led from within, but supported by the West. In Energy and Environmental Policies in the Transition Economies William Chandler synthesizes disparate, specialized analyses and publications. He draws on a relatively large body of research on energy technology, oil and gas markets, geopolitics, finance, economic reform, and environmental science specific to Russia, eastern Europe, and the transition economies. In successive chapters Chandler reviews energy use, energy efficiency, nuclear safety and security, petroleum geoeconomics, coal, utility monopoly and competition, and environmental and climatic change in the former Soviet Union and Central and Eastern Europe. Chandler also considers options for a "second generation" of reform efforts. The subject matter of the book is significant not only for the energy and environmental policies themselves, important though they are, but because those policies in turn affect regional political stability and Western energy security. Energy and Environmental Policies in the Transition Economies will be of considerable interest to policymakers in government, to private-sector actors, to academic scholars, and to students of international energy and environmental politics.
