Bright Mass With Canons by composer Nico Muhly was originally composed for SATB chorus and Organ Accompaniment, but this arrangement features Two Pianos and Percussion. This is the set of Parts for this unique arrangement of a wonderful composition. This work was arranged by Buck McDaniel in 2014 and features an intriguing mix of percussive instruments like the Triangle, Glockenspiel and Vibraphone, together with the Two Pianos, creating a wholly new piece that takes the original composition and transforms it with an entirely new sound and dynamic. The work is divided into four sections, Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus & Benedictus and Agnus Dei .

Nico Muhly 's Stabat Mater Dolorosa for Soprano, Baritone and Ensemble. Parts. My Stabat Mater is a very simply-constructed piece of music. I knew I wanted to write a duet, a piece of religious music, and something to go along with a bit of Birtwistle. My initial instinct was to base the piece on drones, as Birtwistle's music has so very many notes, but then I decided that an austere but ecstatic approach was the best to fill a coherent evening. I asked my friend Craig Lucas to paraphrase the Stabat Mater text - which describes the Virgin Mary weeping at the foot of the cross on which her son is crucified. The piece is organised by separating each phrase of the text with a moment of silence, with the exception of the last three, which are joined with a frenzied chorale with improvised dynamics from the Harp, Wind and Strings . - Nico Muhly Instrumentation: Soprano and Baritone voice, Flute, Clarinet in Bb, Harp, Violin, Viola and Violoncello.

Nico Muhly 's Patterns is a work in four sections for solo Organ. Patterns was commissioned by the American Guild of Organists for the 2014 Biennial National Convention in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A. ' Patterns is composed in four sections, each of which is sort of a rhythmic étude. The first (“Move Along”) is a perpetual motion machine with staggered and angular rhythms thrown between the pedals and the left hand. The second movement (“Palindromes”) is calmer and is centered around an idée fixe in the left hand while the right hand interjects and ornaments. The pedals, here, are a clumsy cousin, constantly upturning the sense of rhythmic stability. The third movement (“Similar”) is all to do with ways to divide up the bar: seven, eight, six, five, four — it’s all there. Then the finale (“Very Fast Music”) is a perpetual motion machine on its highest setting — manic and hyper, with hiccoughs offsetting the regularity of some of the rhythms. ' - Nico Muhly

Nico Muhly 's Step Team for 9 players. Full score. ' Stepping is a form of almost militaristic dancing involving the entire body as well as the voice. The routines are highly choreographed and precise but maintain an expressive freedom that comes out of the energy required to pull off the moves. In writing this piece for the Chicago Symphony MusicNOW, I wanted to avoid too much delicate, pointillistic writing and instead focused on making the nine players function as one team with a singular rhythmic agenda. Whenever the Chicago Symphony comes to New York, I am always impressed with the massive steakhouse-style proportions of the brass sound, so, this score features the Bass Trombone as a guide for the harmonic and lyrical material. At a certain point in the piece, the rhythmic unisons begin to break down, and individual players or groups of players start slowing down or speeding up against the pulse. The Bass Trombone works as a unifying element here, announcing the changes between sections. Some scattered pulses ensue, and the brass section continuously shepherds the other instruments back into line. Step Team ends with a duet between the Bass Trombone and the Piano, with a series of ornaments from the other players. Nico Muhly: Moving Parts (Score/Parts)

Composer's note:'Moving Parts is the music for Benjamin Millepied?s ballet of the same name. Scored for Violin, Clarinet and Pipe Organ, the piece is a series of rhythmic etudes. The slow movement is a very slow passacaglia, with, I hope, unexpected lyrical melodies in the violin. After an extended Organ toccata built over a drone, a brief slow movement creates a natural midpoint. The violin, aggressively plucking, builds up to form a canon with a clarinet, and after a loud outburst from the organ, the piece ends quietly. Moving Parts, written in 2012, is dedicated to Benjamin and the Los Angeles Dance Project.

A new Christmas carol composed by Oscar-winning composer Rachel Portman with text by children's author Michael Morpurgo, We Were There is arranged for SSA Chorus and Piano. The work was commissioned by Liverpool Philharmonic for their 175th anniversary, and first performed by the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth on the 18th of December 2014. Portman' s work gained a rapturous reception, with critics and audiences praising its pretty melodies and the text by the master of fiction Michael Morpurgo. This Christmas carol makes a fantastically fresh antidote to the tired old favourites, and it will definitely be a hit with audiences, who will love the new sound and the divine melodies. It'll certainly be a hit at any Christmas concert. In the September 2015 issue of Organists' Review, David Lindley wrote that We Were There  "would make an agreeable piece for a school carol service, and should be well within the abilities of a reasonably competent group." An equally good review from the September 2015 issue of Sunday by Sunday from the Royal School of Church Music states that "choirs will enjoy this attractive and effective piece."

The electronic CD supplied with the sheet music includes bluesy singing from Antony Hegarty among other sounds, and Muhly clearly relishes the ?inbetweenness? of the singing and the falsetto of the Viola.
