The musical theory of tones, intervals, tetrachords, sounds and scales is in fact the exact musical image of the laws of arithmetic and its symmetries in the set of rules of playing with numbers, their proportions and their medievals. Alone the miracle of the so-called Harmonia perfecta maxima 6 - 8 - 9 - 12, whose proportions determine the fifth as well as the fourth, form the octave and have the brazen whole tone in their center, shaped the musical edifice of Pythagorean music for thousands of years. This elementary chain of proportions 6 : 8 : 9 : 12 is, moreover, completely symmetrical and built up from the arithmetic as well as from the harmonic medieta of the octave numbers 6 and 12. This book develops the theory of proportions as a mathematical science and always contrasts it with the musical motivation by means of numerous examples. The main idea is the derivation of a theory of symmetry from the Harmonia perfecta maxima to the Harmonia perfecta infinita abstracta, a process of unlimited tone generations by Babylonian mean iterations. From this, both the classical-antique diatonic is simultaneously extracted and the path "from the monochord to the organ" is re-examined. Finally, the work contains a mathematically guided introduction to the ancient tetrachordics as well as to the church tonal scales and concludes with an excursion into the sound worlds of the organ. Here the "foot-number rule of the organ" leads us by means of examples into the world of the tonal dispositions of this instrument and shows the omnipresence of the ancient theory of proportions. This book is suitable for anyone with an interest in mathematics and music. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Proportionen und ihre Musik by Karlheinz Schüffler, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2019. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. The Third Supplement includes more than 65 000 compounds sorted according to the empirical formula and characterized by a linearized structural formula. Systems, mixed crystals, solutions, glasses, isotopes, isotopomers (also highly enriched), and other compound classes are separately listed. The GFI provides fast access to any inorganic or organometallic compound and the relevant page numbers in the Handbook. It is one of the means to facilitate searching for the large amount of available information on the chemical and physical properties of compounds. The introduction on p. 1 shows the classes of complexes that have already been described in Chapters 1 through 29 in Volumes D1 to D 5. Complexes with Schiff bases and related compounds (e.g., hydrazones, semicarbazones, or thiosemicarbazones) are now described in Chapters 30 and 31 of this volume and complexes with carbazones, thiocarba­ zones and formazans in Chapter 32. Complexes with Schiff bases play a central role in the development of coordination chemistry. The publications range from synthetic aspects to modern physicochemically or biochemically relevant investigations on these compounds. The huge number of studies results from the fact that these ligands may contain various donor atoms, in addition to the azomethine group, and thus can occur with variable denticities. About 1700 compounds derived from 808 different ligands are described in the present volume. Their arrangement is by ligand type and number of azomethine groups.

The first chapter deals with sulfur imide (S=NH), N-organyl-sulfur imides (S=NR, R = or­ ganyl), and metal complexes of sulfur imides. N-Organyl-sulfur imides have not been isolated, but they can be trapped, for example, by cycloaddition and stabilized by coordination to transi­ tion metals. 11 The following chapter present a detailed survey of other 8 -N compounds with one­ coordinate sulfur, e.g., dithionitrous acid (S=N-SH) and derivatives, the salts of the dithionitryl ion (1 +) ([S=N=S]+), and N-thionitroso-diorganyl-amines (S=NNR , R = organyl). Only the reac­ 2 tions of [S=N=S]+ AsF5, among the known [S=N=S]+ salts, have been extensively studied. Cycloadditions with alkenes and triple bonded compounds produce 1 ,3,2-dithiazolium salts and their derivatives. S=NN(CH )z and S=NN(C H )z form transition metal complexes. The 3 6 5 Iigand is coordinated via the S atom in a monodentate manner.
