Fintech, Small Business & the American Dream - Karen G. Mills - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Fintech, Small Business & the American Dream - Karen G. Mills - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Small businesses are the backbone of the U.S. economy. They are the biggest job creators and offer a path to the American Dream. But for many, it is difficult to get the capital they need to operate and succeed. In the Great Recession, access to capital for small businesses froze, and in the aftermath, many community banks shuttered their doors and other lenders that had weathered the storm turned to more profitable avenues. For years after the financial crisis, the outlook for many small businesses was bleak. But then a new dawn of financial technology, or “fintech,” emerged. Beginning in 2010, new fintech entrepreneurs recognized the gaps in the small business lending market and revolutionized the customer experience for small business owners. Instead of xeroxing a pile of paperwork and waiting weeks for an answer, small businesses filled out applications online and heard back within hours, sometimes even minutes. Banks scrambled to catch up. Technology companies like Amazon, PayPal, and Square entered the market, and new possibilities for even more transformative products and services began to appear. In Fintech, Small Business & the American Dream , former U.S. Small Business Administrator and Senior Fellow at Harvard Business School, Karen G. Mills, focuses on the needs of small businesses for capital and how technology will transform the small business lending market. This is a market that has been plagued by frictions: it is hard for a lender to figure out which small businesses are creditworthy, and borrowers often don’t know how much money or what kind of loan they need. New streams of data have the power to illuminate the opaque nature of a small business’ finances, making it easier for them to weather bumpy cash flows and providing more transparency to potential lenders. Mills charts how fintech has changed and will continue to change small business lending, and how financial innovation and wise regulation can restore a path to the American Dream. An ambitious book grappling with the broad significance of small business to the economy, the historical role of credit markets, the dynamics of innovation cycles, and the policy implications for regulation, Fintech, Small Business & the American Dream is relevant to bankers, fintech investors, and regulators; in fact, anyone who is interested in the future of small business in America.

Viability and Sustainability of Small-Scale Fisheries in Latin America and The Caribbean - - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Viability and Sustainability of Small-Scale Fisheries in Latin America and The Caribbean - - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

One of the main goals in fisheries governance is to promote viability and sustainability in small-scale fishing communities. This is not an easy task given external and internal pressure, including environmental change and competition with other economic sectors searching for development in the coastal region. A comprehensive understanding of small-scale fisheries in their own context, and from a regional perspective, is an important step in supporting the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines on Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF Guidelines). This book contributes to the global effort by offering knowledge, insights and lessons about small-scale fisheries in Latin America and the Caribbean. The 20 case studies included in the book make explicit the various dimensions that are intrinsic to small-scale fisheries in the region, and identify conditions and situations that affect the wellbeing of fishing communities. The book offers insights regarding the challenges faced by small-scale fisheries in the region, and, aligning with the objectives of the SSF Guidelines, provides lessons and experiences about how to make small-scale fishing communities viable while maintaining sustainable fisheries. This important book illustrates the complexity, diversity, and dynamics of small-scale fisheries in the Latin American and Caribbean region and presents experiences, tools, and approaches to lead towards sustainable and viable fisheries. The reader will gain a new understanding on the range of actions, approaches, and information needed for their successful management. John F. Caddy, International Fisheries Expert This book, prepared by the Too Big To Ignore partnership, constitutes a very valuable resource for policy makers, fisheries scientists, non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, and fishing communities interested in putting in place sound management strategies, research, and actions to contribute to the sustainability of small-scale fisheries and food security in Latin America and the Caribbean region. How Small Social Systems Work - Yair Neuman - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

How Small Social Systems Work - Yair Neuman - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Most of us are intuitively familiar with small social systems, such as families and soccer teams. Surprisingly, though, most of us are unaware of how complex these systems are or of the fact that they have a unique character distinguishing them from both populations and individuals. The current manuscript, which emerged from high-level scientific publications on the subject, aims to bridge this gap in our understanding of small social systems. The book aims to explain, illustrate, and model the unique and fascinating nature of small (social) systems by relying on deep scientific foundations and by using examples from sport, movies, music, and the martial arts. To support its friendly exposition of challenging scientific ideas, the book also discusses entertaining questions such as (1) why inviting your mother-in-law to dinner might be a challenging event, for reasons you have never considered; (2) why soccer teams should be messy in order to win; (3) why Nazis are deeply wrong in their understanding of the importance of entropy; and (4) why "panda fighters" failed in the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). "How Small Systems Work is a welcome book, which sheds light on a branch of mathematics overlooked by scholars: how networks store information. Focusing on small systems, the book asks fundamental questions, providing the tools (and the examples) for answering them -with fun. Neuman analyses, with plenty of humor, the dynamics of a family of cats, the pleasure of listening to jazz, and the science behind football championships, while uncovering hidden gems in the history of cinema" Dr. Mario Alemi, author of "The Amazing Journey of Reason: from DNA to Artificial Intelligence"

Small Scale Soil-less Urban Agriculture in Europe - Silvio Caputo - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Small Scale Soil-less Urban Agriculture in Europe - Silvio Caputo - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

This Monograph focuses on the new approaches that urban agriculture offers to grow food in cities. The author paints a dynamic picture of soil-less and indoor techniques that are currently emerging. A growing number of small scale community-led and entrepreneurial initiatives are using such techniques for diverse objectives: to increase resource efficiency; to strengthen food security; to educate and inform or to exploit new market opportunities. The described studies demonstrate how technologies that are typically used in high-tech food production can also be harnessed in small projects to generate social and economic benefits at a local level. The author puts a focus on three aspects: to outline the context within which small scale soil-less urban agriculture is developing in Europe; to give an overview of the state-of-the-art of projects focusing on this area through case study analysis and to elaborate on emerging questions. Such questions include: is the use of soil-less urban agriculture changing the relationship with, and perception of, what is natural and sustainable for urban farmers and small enterprises working in this sector? What is the perceived potential of these soil-less and indoor forms of urban agriculture to meet environmental, social and economic goals? By answering these and other questions, the volume is a valuable resource for researchers in agriculture and sustainability, as well as urban farmers.

Genitourinary System Cytology and Small Biopsy Specimens - - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Genitourinary System Cytology and Small Biopsy Specimens - - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

This book covers the full spectrum of benign and malignant conditions of the genitourinary tract with emphasis on common entities encountered in daily practice. The volume is heavily illustrated and contains useful algorithms that guide the reader through the differential diagnosis and cyto-histologic correlation of common and uncommon entities with appropriate clinical correlations. This book will serve as a valuable quick reference for pathologists, cytopathologists, cytotechnologists, fellows and residents in the field. Genitourinary system cytopathology specimens and small biopsies are common specimens, with a growing number of renal fine needle aspirations and core biopsy procedures being performed each year. Genitourinary System Cytology and Small Biopsy Specimens focuses on the correlation between urinary tract cytology and surgical pathology, including the evaluation of germ cell tumor metastasis to distant sites. Aspiration and exfoliative cytology samples obtained from all areas of and related to the genitourinary tract are highlighted in individualized chapters for these entities. The growing body of information in personalized medicine and molecular discoveries in the field of genitourinary pathology demands focus as well; hence an integrated approach to molecular diagnostics is presented in each chapter. In summary, this book will provide an illustrative and algorithmic approach to every day practice of genitourinary cytopathology and small biopsy material, using appropriate cytologic-histologic correlation format and incorporating recent updates in terminology, guidelines, and ancillary studies.
