General Surgery Boards Case-Based Review - Michael Honaker - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

General Surgery Boards Case-Based Review - Michael Honaker - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This book presents a set of patient case scenarios designed to help the general surgery trainee (resident physician) study for and pass the oral board certification exam. The breadth of topics included is based on the testable core procedures outlined by the Surgical Core (SCORE) curriculum and the American Board of Surgery (ABS), including trauma and critical care, intestinal and anorectal, skin and sort tissue, vascular, and more. For each case, the sequelae may dive into cross-over sections, just as real cases and real exam setting scenarios might. The answers to each question are written in active voice to help the reader practice verbalizing as if performing in an oral boards setting, and repetitive steps - such as seeking a multidisciplinary conference for all cancer cases or performing the ABC evaluation for trauma patients - are repeated to help internalize what may be secondhand in clinical practice but easy to forget in a test scenario. Where possible, multiple options for correct answers are presented, especially in controversial arenas. Otherwise, the answers are dictated by the available literature and guidelines which are provided in the Additional Reading section following each chapter. Practical, straightforward and user-friendly, General Surgery Boards Case-Based Review is an essential element in the resident''s arsenal when preparing for the oral boards.

Darcy Lange, Videography as Social Practice - Mercedes Vicente - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Darcy Lange, Videography as Social Practice - Mercedes Vicente - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

The Videography of Darcy Lange is a critical monograph of a pivotal figure in early analogue video. Trained as a sculptor at the Royal College of Art, Lange developed a socially engaged video practice with remarkable studies of people at work in industrial, farming, and teaching contexts that drew from conceptual art, social documentary and structuralist filmmaking. Lange saw in portable video a democratic tool for communication and social transformation, continuing the legacy of the revolutionary avant-garde projects that merged art with social life and turned audiences into producers. This book follows Lange's trajectory from his early observational studies to the crisis of representation and socially engaged video and activism, as it is shaped by, and resists, the artistic, cultural and political preoccupations of the 1970s and 1980s. It strikes a balance between being a monographic account providing a close analysis of Lange's oeuvre and drawing from unpublished archival materials—a sort of catalogue raisonné—whilst maintaining a breadth with theoretical discourses around the themes of labour and class, education, and indigenous struggles central to his work. The book's frameworks of Conceptual Art, structuralist and ethnographic film theory, social documentary and the critique of representation, video as social practice and the notion of 'feedback', participatory socially engaged art and postcolonial and indigenous theory,—expand our understanding of video outside the predominant structuralist tendencies. Lange's transnational and nomadic career introduces notions of alterity and challenges nationalistic accounts that excluded him in the past.

The Trouble With Sharing - Airi Lampinen - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

The Trouble With Sharing - Airi Lampinen - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Peer-to-peer exchange is a type of sharing that involves the transfer of valued resources, such as goods and services, among members of a local community and/or between parties who have not met before the exchange encounter. It involves online systems that allow strangers to exchange in ways that were previously confined to the realm of kinship and friendship. Through the examples in this book, we encounter attempts to foster the sharing of goods and services in local communities and consider the intricacies of sharing homes temporarily with strangers (also referred to as hospitality exchange or network hospitality). Some of the exchange arrangements discussed involve money while others explicitly ban participants from using it. All rely on digital technologies, but the trickiest challenges have more to do with social interaction than technical features. This book explores what makes peer-to-peer exchange challenging, with an emphasis on reciprocity, closeness, and participation: How should we reciprocate? How might we manage interactions with those we encounter to attain some closeness but not too much? What keeps people from getting involved or draws them into exchange activities that they would rather avoid? This book adds to the growing body of research on exchange platforms and the sharing economy. It provides empirical examples and conceptual grounding for thinking about interpersonal challenges in peer-to-peer exchange and the efforts that are required for exchange arrangements to flourish. It offers inspiration for how we might think and design differently to better understand and support the efforts of those involved in peer-to-peer exchange. While the issues cannot be simply "solved" by technology, it matters which digital tools an exchange arrangement relies on, and even seemingly small design decisions can have a significant impact on what it is like to participate in exchange processes. The technologies that support exchange arrangements-often platforms of some sort-can be driven by differing sets of values and commitments. This book invites students and scholars in the Human-Computer Interaction community, and beyond, to envision and design alternative exchange arrangements and future economies.

Raman Spectroscopy in Cultural Heritage Preservation - Howell G. M. Edwards - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Raman Spectroscopy in Cultural Heritage Preservation - Howell G. M. Edwards - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This book addresses the application of Raman spectroscopic techniques to a range of diverse problems which arise in the study, conservation and restoration of artefacts and sites closely related to our cultural heritage as well as in authentication. These themes are naturally wider than what at first might be considered as artworks and archaeological artefacts and the topics include pigments, paintings, ceramics, glass, sculpture and patination / corrosion, textiles, industrial archaeology, the degradation and preservation of biomaterials, mummies and human skeletal remains. An interesting feature is the inclusion of modern case studies which describe specific problems and approaches to the Raman spectral analysis of items important to our cultural heritage. The text is prefaced with an introduction to the important parameters used in nondestructive Raman measurements and also highlights some future applications based upon novel miniaturised instrumentation for in-field studies andpotential screening work which will identify specimens which would repay further studies in the laboratory. An attempt is made to give a snapshot of the state-of-the-art evolution since the beginning of the technique (1970s) and to point out potential further development. The book is co-edited by three international experts with many years' experience in the application of Raman spectroscopy to artworks, archaeological artefacts and in the investigation of materials and sites for cultural heritage preservation and each editor has undertaken to write individual chapters and different topics personally. The adopted approach is designed to convey the sort of information which has become available from the adoption of analytical Raman spectroscopy to different problems in the field of cultural heritage preservation through the spectral interrogation of artefacts and how the interpretation of the spectral data can assist museum curators, archaeologists and cultural heritage historians in the preservation and conservation of ancient materials and sites : a particular advantage in this respect is the ability of Raman spectroscopy to determine –generally in a strictly noninvasive procedure - at the laboratory or on-site with mobile instruments, the presence of both organic and inorganic components in a particular specimen together nondestructively without any chemical and mechanical pretreatment being undertaken, which is an essential requirement for rare and valuable samples . An important aside from this work is the means of spectral identification of ongoing biodeterioration and biological colonisation in specimens in storage and the effects of environmental deterioration such as humidity and temperature upon their integrity.
