Movements of Form - Joachim H. Mowitz - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This book offers a thought-provoking exploration of dynamic geometry and its connections to self-reference and theoretical biology. The authors explore how a self-referential boundary can be translated into remarkable relations between expanding geometrical forms, with a particular focus on triangles and circles. The essence of this work lies in revealing not only how these forms expand and interact with others but also how their interactions lead to closed loops of definitions between processes, where triangles and circles reciprocally define one another. These unique geometrical relations offer fresh perspectives on the interaction and emergence of forms. Through the introduction of time and a fixed velocity of expansions, a rich tapestry of encounters and coalescences unfolds, pushing beyond the boundaries of traditional insights on context dependence and state transitions of systems. These captivating movements elude prediction other than by numerical approximation within unpredictable durations. Unlike cellular automata, they defy stepwise progression on a predefined grid, presenting themselves as unprogrammable construction processes that leave readers in awe of their unexpected elegance. This book is essential reading for researchers and students in theoretical biology seeking to deepen their understanding of the intersections of geometry and systems theory and seeking to gain new insights into the processes that underlie the origination of complexity. "What is unique to the authors' attempt is to shed a new light on extending the notion of cohesive interaction so as to make it applicable even to biology at large without offending the established physics so far. To the best of my knowledge, their work has been the first attempt of this kind in explicating the intricate relationship between geometric topology of the network and the realizable temporal cohesion to be observed widely in biology." (Professor Koichiro Matsuno, 1st foreword to this book) "I am delighted that the authors use Robert Rosen's (M,R)-systems — impredicative networks that are inherently geometrical — to illustrate (see Chapter 4 of this book) their self-referential systems of geometrical expansions." (dr. Aloisius Louie, 2nd foreword to this book)

Pre-Project Excellence - Raphael H Cohen - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This guide complements traditional project management by focusing on the critical pre-project stage. It addresses a major challenge: only 12% of projects finish on time and within budget, often due to poor initial pre-project analysis. This leads to wasted resources. The content offers proven best practices for implementing ISO 56007 recommendations, enhancing project calibration, selection, and overall success rates. Liberating innovators from the constraints of traditional business plans, the guide suggests, along with ISO 56007, a "Concept/Opportunity Case" as an investor-friendly alternative. This template is rooted in the robust IpOp Decision Tree, an ISO 56007-recommended checklist of 11 fundamental questions to thoroughly address essential decision-makers' concerns. This rigorous method ensures reliable project selection and optimal resource allocation. The IpOp Model serves as a structured roadmap, enabling project managers and innovators to transform ideas into compelling projects. It provides clear guidance for making informed decisions, whether to pivot or abandon projects that aren’t viable. By following ISO 56007 recommendations, the IpOp Model helps navigate uncertainties and manage critical project factors effectively. Ideal for decision-makers, project managers, executives, professionals, intrapreneurs, and entrepreneurs engaged in project management and innovation, this guide is an essential tool for any pre-project analysis and for turning innovative ideas into successful projects.

Linear Models and Design - Jay H. Beder - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Linear Models and Design - Jay H. Beder - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This book is designed as a textbook for graduate students and as a resource for researchers seeking a thorough mathematical treatment of its subject. It develops the main results of regression and the analysis of variance, as well as the central results on confounded and fractional factorial experiments. Matrix theory is deemphasized; its role is taken instead by the theory of linear transformations between vector spaces. The text gives a carefully paced and unified presentation of two topics, linear models and experimental design. Students are assumed to have a solid background in linear algebra, basic knowledge of regression and analysis of variance, and some exposure to experimental design, and should be comfortable with reading and constructing mathematical proofs. The book leads students into the mathematical theory, including many examples both for motivation and for illustration. Over 130 exercises of varying difficulty are included. An extensive mathematical appendix and a detailed index make the text especially accessible. Linear Models and Design can serve as a textbook for a year-long course in the topics covered, or for a one-semester course in either linear model theory or experimental design. It prepares students for more advanced topics in the field, and assists in developing a thoughtful approach to the existing literature. It includes a guide to terminology as well as discussion of the history and development of ideas, and offers a fresh perspective on the fundamental concepts and results of the subject.

Graph and Network Theory - Jan H. Van Vuuren - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Graph and Network Theory - Jan H. Van Vuuren - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This textbook covers a diversity of topics in graph and network theory, both from a theoretical standpoint, and from an applied modelling point of view. Mathematica® is used to demonstrate much of the modelling aspects. Graph theory and model building tools are developed in tandem with effective techniques for solving practical problems via computer implementation. The book is designed with three primary readerships in mind. Individual syllabi or suggested sequences for study are provided for each of three student audiences: mathematics, applied mathematics/operations research, and computer science. In addition to the visual appeal of each page, the text contains an abundance of gems. Most chapters open with real-life problem descriptions which serve as motivation for the theoretical development of the subject matter. Each chapter concludes with three different sets of exercises. The first set of exercises are standard and geared toward the more mathematically inclined reader. Many of these are routine exercises, designed to test understanding of the material in the text, but some are more challenging. The second set of exercises is earmarked for the computer technologically savvy reader and offer computer exercises using Mathematica. The final set consists of larger projects aimed at equipping those readers with backgrounds in the applied sciences to apply the necessary skills learned in the chapter in the context of real-world problem solving. Additionally, each chapter offers biographical notes as well as pictures of graph theorists and mathematicians who have contributed significantly to the development of the results documented in the chapter. These notes are meant to bring the topics covered to life, allowing the reader to associate faces with some of the important discoveries and results presented. In total, approximately 100 biographical notes are presented throughout the book. The material in this book has been organized into three distinct parts, each with a different focus. The first part is devoted to topics in network optimization, with a focus on basic notions in algorithmic complexity and the computation of optimal paths, shortest spanning trees, maximum flows and minimum-cost flows in networks, as well as the solution of network location problems. The second part is devoted to a variety of classical problems in graph theory, including problems related to matchings, edge and vertex traversal, connectivity, planarity, edge and vertex coloring, and orientations of graphs. Finally, the focus in the third part is on modern areas of study in graph theory, covering graph domination, Ramsey theory, extremal graph theory, graph enumeration, and application of the probabilistic method.

Rational Points on Elliptic Curves - Joseph H. Silverman - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Rational Points on Elliptic Curves - Joseph H. Silverman - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

The theory of elliptic curves involves a pleasing blend of algebra, geometry, analysis, and number theory. This volume stresses this interplay as it develops the basic theory, thereby providing an opportunity for advanced undergraduates to appreciate the unity of modern mathematics. At the same time, every effort has been made to use only methods and results commonly included in the undergraduate curriculum. This accessibility, the informal writing style, and a wealth of exercises make Rational Points on Elliptic Curves an ideal introduction for students at all levels who are interested in learning about Diophantine equations and arithmetic geometry. Most concretely, an elliptic curve is the set of zeroes of a cubic polynomial in two variables. If the polynomial has rational coefficients, then one can ask for a description of those zeroes whose coordinates are either integers or rational numbers. It is this number theoretic question that is the main subject of Rational Points on Elliptic Curves . Topics covered include the geometry and group structure of elliptic curves, the Nagell–Lutz theorem describing points of finite order, the Mordell–Weil theorem on the finite generation of the group of rational points, the Thue–Siegel theorem on the finiteness of the set of integer points, theorems on counting points with coordinates in finite fields, Lenstra''s elliptic curve factorization algorithm, and a discussion of complex multiplication and the Galois representations associated to torsion points. Additional topics new to the second edition include an introduction to elliptic curve cryptography and a brief discussion of the stunning proof of Fermat''s Last Theorem by Wiles et al. via the use of elliptic curves.

Regression Analysis in Medical Research - Aeilko H. Zwinderman - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Regression Analysis in Medical Research - Aeilko H. Zwinderman - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This edition is a pretty complete textbook and tutorial for medical and health care students, as well as a recollection/update bench, and help desk for professionals. Novel approaches already applied in published clinical research will be addressed: matrix analyses, alpha spending, gate keeping, kriging, interval censored regressions, causality regressions, canonical regressions, quasi-likelihood regressions, novel non-parametric regressions. Each chapter can be studied as a stand-alone, and covers one field in the fast growing world of regression analyses. The authors, as professors in statistics and machine learning at European universities, are worried, that their students find regression-analyses harder than any other methodology in statistics. This is serious, because almost all of the novel methodologies in current data mining and data analysis include elements of regression-analysis. It is the main incentive for writing this 28 chapter edition, consistent of - 28 major fields of regression analysis, - their condensed maths, - their applications in medical and health research as published so far, - step by step analyses for self-assessment, - conclusion and reference sections. Traditional regression analysis is adequate for epidemiology, but lacks the precision required for clinical investigations. However, in the past two decades modern regression methods have proven to be much more precise. And so it is time, that a book described regression analyses for clinicians. The current edition is the first to do so. It is written for a non-mathematical readership. Self-assessment data-files are provided through Springer'' s "Extras Online".
