Melting Hadrons, Boiling Quarks - From Hagedorn Temperature to Ultra-Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions at CERN - - Bog - Springer International

This book shows how the study of multi-hadron production phenomena in the years after the founding of CERN culminated in Hagedorn's pioneering idea of limiting temperature, leading on to the discovery of the quark-gluon plasma -- announced, in February 2000 at CERN. Following the foreword by Herwig Schopper -- the Director General (1981-1988) of CERN at the key historical juncture -- the first part is a tribute to Rolf Hagedorn (1919-2003) and includes contributions by contemporary friends and colleagues, and those who were most touched by Hagedorn: Tamás Biró, Igor Dremin, Torleif Ericson, Marek Gazdzicki, Mark Gorenstein, Hans Gutbrod, Maurice Jacob, István Montvay, Berndt Müller, Grazyna Odyniec, Emanuele Quercigh, Krzysztof Redlich, Helmut Satz, Luigi Sertorio, Ludwik Turko, and Gabriele Veneziano. The second and third parts retrace 20 years of developments that after discovery of the Hagedorn temperature in 1964 led to its recognition as the melting point of hadrons into boiling quarks, and to the rise of the experimental relativistic heavy ion collision program. These parts contain previously unpublished material authored by Hagedorn and Rafelski: conference retrospectives, research notes, workshop reports, in some instances abbreviated to avoid duplication of material, and rounded off with the editor's explanatory notes. About the editor: Johann Rafelski is a theoretical physicist working at The University of Arizona in Tucson, USA. Born in 1950 in Krakow, Poland, he received his Ph.D. with Walter Greiner in Frankfurt, Germany in 1973. Rafelski arrived at CERN in 1977, where in a joint effort with Hagedorn he contributed greatly to the establishment of the relativistic heavy ion collision, and quark-gluon plasma research fields. Moving on, with stops in Frankfurt and Cape Town, to Arizona, he invented and developed the strangeness quark flavor as the signature of quark-gluon plasma.

Imperfect Duties of Management - Richard M. Robinson - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Key Duties of International Investment Arbitrators - Katia Fach Gomez - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Key Duties of International Investment Arbitrators - Katia Fach Gomez - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This book critically analyses how arbitration cases, institutional rules and emerging codes of conduct in the international arbitration sector have dealt with a series of key arbitrator duties to date. In addition, it offers a range of feasible and well-grounded proposals regarding investment arbitrators'' duties in the future. The following aspects are examined in depth: - the duty of disclosure - the duty to investigate - the duty of diligence and integrity, which in turn may be divided into temporal availability, a non-delegation of responsibilities, and adhering to appropriate behaviour - the duty of confidentiality, and - other duties such as monitoring arbitration costs, or continuous training. Investment arbitration is currently undergoing sweeping changes. The EU proposal to create a Multilateral Investment Court incorporates a number of ground-breaking developments with regard to arbitrators. Whether this new model of permanent "members of the court" will ever become a reality, or whether the classical ex-parte arbitrator system will manage to retain its dominance in the investment arbitration milieu, this book is based on the assumption that there is a current need to re-examine and rethink the main duties of investment arbitrators. Apart from being the first monograph to analyse these duties in detail, the book will spark a crucial debate among international scholars and practitioners. It is essential to identify arbitrators'' duties and find consensus on how they should be reshaped in the near future, so that these central figures in investment arbitration can reinforce the legitimacy of a system that is currently in crisis.

Chitin and Chitosan - Shameem Hasan - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Chitin and Chitosan - Shameem Hasan - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This book reviews work that covers everything from basic chemistry to advanced applications. Chitin and chitosan are used in a plethora of applications from wastewater treatment to prosthetics. After introducing the subject of polysaccharides as a whole, the authors turn to the preparation of chitin and chitosan and the characterization of the latter. The book provides information on chitin chemistry, extraction of chitin, chitosan preparation processes, and the applications of their derivatives in various fields. Among the applications that are included in detail are the adsorption of heavy metals for pollution prevention and clean-up, biosensors, cosmetics, various medical applications from anti-tumor activity to bone tissue engineering, agriculture and food production, and proton exchange membranes for fuel cells. Chitin and Chitosan features:• information on molecular structure, synthesis, properties, and latest research related to chitin and chitosan;• coverage of a wide range of topics from the properties of chitosan to its derivatives and applications;• in-depth information on biomedical applications of chitin and chitosan; and• information that can be applied to other biopolymer processing engineering areas. This book will be of interest to practitioners working in a wide variety of industries for which chitin and chitosan are useful materials, researchers in biosensors and heavy-metal adsorption, and to academic researchers investigating the properties, preparation, and uses of these materials.

Machine Design for Technology Students - Anthony D'angelo Jr. - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Machine Design for Technology Students - Anthony D'angelo Jr. - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This book is intended for students taking a Machine Design course leading to a Mechanical Engineering Technology degree. It can be adapted to a Machine Design course for Mechanical Engineering students or used as a reference for adopting systems engineering into a design course. The book introduces the fundamentals of systems engineering, the concept of synthesis, and the basics of trade-off studies. It covers the use of a functional flow block diagram to transform design requirements into the design space to identify all success modes. The book discusses fundamental stress analysis for structures under axial, torsional, or bending loads. In addition, the book discusses the development of analyzing shafts under combined loads by using Mohr''s circle and failure mode criterion. Chapter 3 provides an overview of fatigue and the process to develop the shaft-sizing equations under dynamic loading conditions. Chapter 4 discusses power equations and the nomenclature and stress analysis for spur and straight bevel gears and equations for analyzing gear trains. Other machine component topics include derivation of the disc clutch and its relationship to compression springs, derivation of the flat belt equations, roller and ball bearing life equations, roller chains, and keyways. Chapter 5 introduces the area of computational machine design and provides codes for developing simple and powerful computational methods to solve: cross product required to calculate the torques and bending moments on shafts, 1D stress analysis, reaction loads on support bearings, Mohr''s circle, shaft sizing under dynamic loading, and cone clutch. The final chapter shows how to integrate Systems Engineering into machine design for a capstone project as a project-based collaborative design methodology. The chapter shows how each design requirement is transformed through the design space to identify the proper engineering equations.
