Modern Optical Spectroscopy - William W. Parson - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

The 3rd edition of this textbook offers clear explanations of optical spectroscopic phenomena and shows how spectroscopic techniques are used in modern chemistry, biochemistry and biophysics. Topics included are:electronic and vibrational absorptionfluorescencesymmetry operations and normal-mode calculations electron transfer from excited moleculesenergy transferexciton interactionselectronic and vibrational circular dichroismcoherence and dephasingultrafast pump-probe and photon-echo spectroscopysingle-molecule and fluorescence-correlation spectroscopyRaman scatteringmultiphoton absorptionquantum optics and non-linear opticsentropy changes during photoexcitationelectronic and vibrational Stark effects studies of fast processes in single moleculestwo-dimensional electronic and vibrational spectroscopyThis revised and updated edition provides expanded discussions of laser spectroscopy, crystal symmetry, birefringence, non-linear optics, solar cells and light-emitting diodes. The explanations are sufficiently thorough and detailed to be useful for researchers, graduate students and advanced undergraduates in chemistry, biochemistry and biophysics. They are based on time-dependent quantum mechanics, but are developed from first principles so that they can be understood by readers with little prior training in the field. Additional topics and highlights are presented in special boxes in the text. The book is richly illustrated with color figures throughout. Each chapter ends with a section of questions for self-examination.

Case-Based Lessons in the Management of Complex Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery - - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Case-Based Lessons in the Management of Complex Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery - - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This text provides a comprehensive, state-of-the art definitive “case-based” reference for the work-up, diagnosis, intraoperative management, and peri-operative care of patients with complex, difficult to manage HPB diseases. The book provides a practical, clinically useful guide that reviews select complicated HPB cases, as well as providing key information on how to manage such patients. This text provides detailed “case-based” algorithms, as well as specific guidance on the management of complicated HPB patients. In addition, it also focuses on key points on how to work-up patients pre-operatively, highlights intra-operative technical “pearls”, and defines optimal post-operative care. Chapters are rich with images, have multiple “call out” boxes to highlight key lessons learned and also include clinical management “pearls.” All chapters are written by experts in their field and include the most up-to-date clinical information from national and world leaders in their respective discipline. Case-Based Lessons in the Management of Complex Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery will serve as a very useful resource for physicians, fellows and residents dealing with complex HPB patients. In addition, It will provide a concise yet comprehensive summary of the diagnosis, work-up, and management of some of the most complex, yet common, HPB cases.

A Course in the Calculus of Variations - Filippo Santambrogio - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

A Course in the Calculus of Variations - Filippo Santambrogio - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This book provides an introduction to the broad topic of the calculus of variations. It addresses the most natural questions on variational problems and the mathematical complexities they present. Beginning with the scientific modeling that motivates the subject, the book then tackles mathematical questions such as the existence and uniqueness of solutions, their characterization in terms of partial differential equations, and their regularity. It includes both classical and recent results on one-dimensional variational problems, as well as the adaptation to the multi-dimensional case. Here, convexity plays an important role in establishing semi-continuity results and connections with techniques from optimization, and convex duality is even used to produce regularity results. This is then followed by the more classical Hölder regularity theory for elliptic PDEs and some geometric variational problems on sets, including the isoperimetric inequality andthe Steiner tree problem. The book concludes with a chapter on the limits of sequences of variational problems, expressed in terms of G-convergence. While primarily designed for master''s-level and advanced courses, this textbook, based on its author''s instructional experience, also offers original insights that may be of interest to PhD students and researchers. A foundational understanding of measure theory and functional analysis is required, but all the essential concepts are reiterated throughout the book using special memo-boxes.

History of Policing, Crime, Disorder, Punishment - Wendy Laverick - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

History of Policing, Crime, Disorder, Punishment - Wendy Laverick - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This engaging textbook provides a broad and unique coverage of the key historical events that shaped ideas in criminology, criminal justice and policing from the late seventeenth century to the early twenty-first century in England and Wales. It vividly illustrates the multi-disciplinary nature of criminology and penology by providing important insights into the social and political issues that shaped the development and operations of the criminal justice system and its responses to both crime and disorder. Using key text boxes, this book highlights key people, theorists, foundational principles and events throughout. Part One discusses the nature of crime and forms of punishment between 1689 and 1750 and the penological concerns regarding the aims of punishment. Part Two focuses on crime and disorder between 1750 and 1850, examining the impact of urbanization on criminal activity and it considers the background and state responses to key episodes of public disorder. Part Three covers the development of policing 1689-1856 and the contribution to policing made by reformers and the implementation of police reform. Part Four deals with a number of issues affecting crime and punishment between 1850 and 1920 including episodes such as Irish Home Rule within the context of ''high policing''. It evaluates changes to the nature and role of prisons that occurred in this period. This student-friendly book contains end of chapter questions which summarise and enable further discussion.

Plant Anatomy - Sheila Lyons Sobaski - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Plant Anatomy - Sheila Lyons Sobaski - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Intended as a text for upper-division undergraduates, graduate students and as a potential reference, this broad-scoped resource is extensive in its educational appeal by providing a new concept-based organization with end-of-chapter literature references, self-quizzes, and illustration interpretation. The concept-based, pedagogical approach, in contrast to the classic discipline-based approach, was specifically chosen to make the teaching and learning of plant anatomy more accessible for students. In addition, for instructors whose backgrounds may not primarily be plant anatomy, the features noted above are designed to provide sufficient reference material for organization and class presentation. This text is unique in the extensive use of over 1150 high-resolution color micrographs, color diagrams and scanning electron micrographs. Another feature is frequent side-boxes that highlight the relationship of plant anatomy to specialized investigations in plant molecular biology, classical investigations, functional activities, and research in forestry, environmental studies and genetics, as well as other fields. Each of the 19 richly-illustrated chapters has an abstract, a list of keywords, an introduction, a text body consisting of 10 to 20 concept-based sections, and a list of references and additional readings. At the end of each chapter, the instructor and student will find a section-by-section concept review, concept connections, concept assessment (10 multiple-choice questions), and concept applications. Answers to the assessment material are found in an appendix. An index and a glossary with over 700 defined terms complete the volume.
