Communication Skills for Surgeons - - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Communication Skills for Surgeons - - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Historically, communication was described as a secondary, or ‘soft skill’ for surgeons. Now, astute communication, both with patients and with colleagues, forms a fundamental element of holistic surgical practice and comprises a core component of the ‘Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons’ that are increasingly recognised in modern surgical practice. Good communication is required during each patient interaction: history taking, explanation, consent, breaking bad news, and managing difficult encounters such as the demanding or angry patient. Good communication with patients improves patient trust, compliance and overall satisfaction, reduces complaints and malpractice claims. High quality communication is also fundamental when interacting with colleagues: in theatre, on the ward, whilst making referrals and organising special tests. In the busy schedules of medical professionals, such communication must be succinct and relevant. Team structures must empower all members to speak up, so as to prevent harm being done. Suboptimal communication is a root cause for the majority of serious adverse events. Furthermore, good communication reduces job stress and enhances satisfaction for the surgeon. Good communication is not an inborn behaviour; it is a learned skill that is based on key principles. Studies have clearly demonstrated that education in communication improves patient outcomes and satisfaction. Several frameworks have been described, to facilitate good communication in certain scenarios: SPIKES for breaking bad news, SBAR for handover, surgical briefs and de-briefs, to name a few. This textbook will be aimed towards medical students, surgical trainees and surgical consultants internationally. It is relevant to every-day practice, examinations and OSCEs, such as medical finals, MRCS, FRCS and international equivalents, and interviews where role play is often featured.

Memory, Anniversaries and Mental Health in International Historical Perspective - - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Memory, Anniversaries and Mental Health in International Historical Perspective - - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This book is the first to explore memory, misremembering, forgetting, and anniversaries in the history of psychiatry and mental health. It challenges simplistic representations of the callous nature of mental health care in the past, while at the same time eschewing a celebratory and uncritical marking of anniversaries and individuals. Asking critical questions of the early Whiggish histories of mental health care, the book problematizes the idea of a shared professional and institutional history, and the abiding faith placed in the reform of medicine, administration, and even patients. It contends that much post-1800 legislation drafted to ensure reform, acted to preserve beliefs about the ''bad old days'' and a ''brighter future'' in the state memories of imperial powers, which in turn exported these notions around the world. Conversely, the collection demonstrates the variety of remembering and forgetting, building on recent interest in the ideological and cultural linkages between past and present in international psychiatric practice. In this way, it seeks to trace the pathways of memory, exploring the direction of travel, and the perpetuation, remodeling, and uprooting of recollection. 21st Century Media and Female Mental Health - Fredrika Thelandersson - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

21st Century Media and Female Mental Health - Fredrika Thelandersson - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This open access book examines the conversations around gendered mental health in contemporary Western media culture. While early 21st century-media was marked by a distinct focus on happiness, productivity and success, during the 2010s negative feelings and discussions around mental health have become increasingly common in that same media landscape. This book traces this turn to sadness in women''s media culture and shows that it emerged indirectly as a result of a culture overtly focused on happiness. By tracing the coverage of mental health issues in magazines, among female celebrities, and on social media this book shows how an increasingly intimate media environment has made way for a profitable vulnerability, that takes the shape of marketable and brand-friendly mental illness awareness that strengthens the authenticity of those who embrace it. But at the same time sad girl cultures are proliferating on social media platforms, creating radically honest spaces where those who suffer get support, and more capacious ways of feeling bad are formed. Using discourse analysis and digital ethnography to study contemporary representations of mental illness and sadness in Western popular media and social media, this book takes a feminist media studies approach to popular discourse, understanding the conversations happening around mental health in these sites to function as scripts for how to think about and experience mental illness and sadness

Public Net Worth - Willem Buiter - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Public Net Worth - Willem Buiter - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

As individuals, we depend on the services that governments provide. Collectively, we look to them to tackle the big problems - from long-term climate and demographic change to short-term crises like pandemics or war. Funding this activity, and managing the required finances sustainably, is difficult – and getting more so. But governments don't provide – or use – basic financial information that every business is required to maintain. They ignore the value of public assets and most liabilities. This leads to inefficiency and bad decision-making and piles up problems for the future. Governments need to create balance sheets that properly reflect assets and liabilities, and to understand their future obligations and revenue prospects. Net Worth – both today and for the future – should be the measure of financial strength and success. Only if this information is put at the centre of government financial decision-making can the present challenges to public finances around the world be addressed effectively, and in a way that is fair to future generations. The good news is that there are ways to deal with these problems and make government finances more resilient and fairer to future generations. The facts, and the solutions, are non-partisan, and so is this book. Responsible leaders of any political persuasion need to understand the issues and the tools that can enable them to deliver policy within these constraints.

Why Teaching Art Is Teaching Ethics - John Rethorst - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Why Teaching Art Is Teaching Ethics - John Rethorst - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This exhaustively-researched, carefully-focused book asks whether imagination, emotion and art can enlighten our sense of right and wrong, looking at this question through the lens of moral philosophy with contributions from cognitive science, psychology and neurology. If moral thinking is simply logical reasoning or following God-given law, why did the poet Shelley say that "the great instrument of moral good is the imagination"? Why does ethical reasoning tend towards absolutes: something is either right or wrong, period, while a thoughtful minority values the "priority of the particular" - that unique aspects of a situation may come closer to the heart of the matter than any general rules could? Are emotions, as many philosophers in history have theorized, only a distraction from the clear perception of duty, or do feelings add something important, even critical, to how we judge good and bad, right and wrong? Can great works of art and literature embody imagination, the particular, and emotions to illuminate human life in ways crucial to ethical thinking? This book introduces an original idea in philosophy, "moral density," which for the first time elucidates the profound relation between art and ethics. Written for the literate layperson, an academic or technical background is not necessary, so this book will be of interest not only to philosophers and educators, but to all who are concerned with what is good , and how to see it and teach it.

Pediatric Rotations - - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Pediatric Rotations - - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Pediatric rotations are a crucial part of medical education, yet didactic curricula often do not spend much time on pediatric-specific skills. Learners often enter the pediatric clinical setting with little preparation and orientation. The care of children is nuanced and specialized and requires a different approach than adult medicine. This text serves as a valuable resource for students on pediatric clinical rotations and for advanced practitioners entering pediatric clinical practice without much prior experience. This high yield book covers the fundamental knowledge and skills required for pediatric care, including the physical, emotional, and social development of children, and the diagnosis and management of common pediatric conditions, with emphasizes on a patient-centered approach. Clinical pearls and application exercises embedded within each chapter help students prepare for real-life clinical scenarios and written examinations. The section on communication with the medical team reviews how to present pediatric patients on family-centered rounds, how to write succinct and useful notes, how to eloquently request a consult, and safely handoff a patient. The book also features practical tips on inter-professional communication, breaking bad news, and strategies to enhance learning and achieve success while working within a pediatric care team. Finally, a portion of the book is devoted to the considerations specific to the clinical settings where most learners rotate. Written by experts in the field, Pediatric Rotations provides a detailed overview of skills required to be successful on pediatric wards and in pediatric clinics while also including the most up to date scientific and clinical information.

The Next Wave of Global Anti-Money Laundering Enforcement - Sven Stumbauer - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

The Next Wave of Global Anti-Money Laundering Enforcement - Sven Stumbauer - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

The financial-services industry has been disrupted and roiled by a perfect storm of forces. Complex regulatory-compliance requirements, aging legacy systems, dated operating models, digital innovation and fintech have rapidly changed the environment for many financial institutions worldwide. To further amplify the challenges for financial institutions globally, various regulatory bodies across the globe have enacted major legislative changes, increasing the pressure on boards and C-level executives significantly. Unlike previous years, this new regulatory focus on anti-money laundering (AML) can be seen globally as various regulatory regimes converge closer to a global standard as promulgated by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). Increasing regulatory enforcement, geopolitical changes and record-setting monetary fines have made adequate AML risk management a significant challenge for financial institutions globally. In this environment, financial institutions need to become more risk agile and move from backwards looking compliance measures to proactive risk management. This book will showcase how to transform current AML compliance efforts into more dynamic risk management solutions that help protect financial institutions against bad actors and manage regulatory risk and exposure. Based on the author’s global experience in helping financial institutions to manage their AML risks in 60+ jurisdictions, this book calls for greater urgency from boards and senior management, policymakers and AML risk practitioners to address looming risks. From corporate governance structures, tone at the top, to more efficient ways to quantify and manage risks, this book addresses key changes financial institutions must make to evolve from strict compliance to an agile risk management framework that actually addresses their AML risks in practical ways and shift the mind set from a cost center to a value creation center.
