In the past the aim of Structure Reports has been to present critical reports on all work of crystallographic structural interest, whether it is derived directly from X-ray, electron, or neutron diffraction, or even indirectly from other experiments. The reports were in­ tended to be critical and not mere abstracts, except in some cases when a brief indication of the content of a paper of related interest was included in the form of an abstract. In selecting topics for reporting, the criterion ''of structural interest'' was freely interpreted in terms of what was topically interesting. However, the amount of literature covering matters of structural interest became so large that this policy could no longer be followed, and from Volume 28 onwards, critical reports are given only on actual structure deter­ minations. Only in this way was it possible to keep yearly volumes to a fairly uniform and usable size. Starting with Volume 30, Structure Reports is produced in a new format by photo-offset printing from typed manuscript with unjustified lines. At the time when the decision for this change was taken, the cost of setting the manuscript in type was becoming so high as to render the cost of individual subscription prohibitive. At that time automatic typing methods giving justified lines, etc.

This volume contains the proceedings of a postgraduate course for medical practitioners of various specialties. One purpose of the course was to provide factual data on developmental aspects of the brain and behaviour, and about the possible impact of several important categories of internal and environ­ mental factors upon neural development. Another purpose was to indicate the extent and the limitations of the methodology now available for the scientific approach of the study of the development of behaviour. In general the investigator is faced with methodological problems of two types, the proper definition and scoring of behavioural items, and the isolation of the different factors that contribute to a particular behaviour. An example of the latter is given in the very last paper, which is concerned with attempts at unravelling under experimental conditions the contributions made by various influences upon a single sequence of behaviour. The course was held in Leiden in November 1970, and was the third in a series of Boerhaave Courses instigated by the Dutch Growth Foundation. Previous subjects have been ''Somatic growth of the child'' (in 1964) and ''Human body composition'' (in 1967). The programme was planned in collaboration with Prof. Dr. H. H. van Gelderen, Dr. D. G. Lawrence, Prof. Dr. F. J. Monks, Prof. Dr. H. F. R. Prechtl and Prof. Dr. H. K. A. Visser. Financial support was given by the pharmaceutical firms Philips-Duphar, Sandoz and Specia, and by the Dutch Growth Foundation. Major editorial contributions were made by Anneke Bot.

This book was composed in honour of Dr. Ir. W. G. Beeftink to commemorate his retirement as a plant ecologist at the Delta Institute for H ydrobiological Research, Yerseke, The Netherlands. The editors'' main aim has been to collect scientific papers of Wim Beeftink''s friends and colleagues. The title of the book: ''Vegetation between land and sea. Structure and processes'' was originally proposed by Prof. Dr. W. H. O. Ernst. It was amended by Prof. Dr. J. J. Barkman. In our judgement it reflects the best attempt to cover the numerous and divergent contributions under one heading. Not all papers however fit the "field" covered by the title, and we use this word both literally and metaphorically. We are glad and proud that so many authors went through the strain of the production of a paper, ill'' most cases not scheduled, with eagerness. Due to the fact that Wim Beeftink has so many close friends in the field of plant ecology, this fiber amicorum covers a wide range of disciplines covered, in turn, by a great variety of people. The papers range from taxonomy to experimental physiology, from fungi to seed plants, from autecology to synsystematics. Environmental pollution and management studies are also included. The contents of the papers depict Wim''s personal evolution as a botanist. Retired professors as well as students are amongst the authors, heads of departments as well as technicians. It proves Wim''s ability to be of one mind with all ranks.

The idea of the symposium came during the XVllth General Assembly of the IAU at Montreal. The Working Group on Be stars adopted both the proposal of holding a meeting, and of having it at the Universitats­ sternwarte Munich. The meeting was organized under the auspices of IAU Comm. 29 (Stel­ lar Spectra) and the sponsorship of Comm. 45 (Stellar Classification). The Scientific Organizing Committee was composed of Mercedes Jaschek (chairman), W. Bonsack, C. de Loore, A. Feinstein, H. G. Groth, P. Harmanec, L. Houziaux, A. M. Hubert-De1p1ace, L. S. Luud, A. Slettebak and A. Underhill. The members of this committee are to be thanked for their devotion to the organization of what turned out to be a very successful meeting. The program was organized on an observational approach, comprising sessions on photometry, polarization, spectroscopy, infrared observations, rotation and binarity, X-ray observations, UV observations and mass loss, and atmospheric models. Each session started with an invited summary paper, followed by a number of contributions. The different sessions were chaired by A. Feinstein, R. Sta1io, C. de Loore, Ch. Fehrenbach, J. P. Swings, C. Jaschek, A. Sapar, G. T. Traving, M. de Groot and H. G. Groth. Upon request of the Working Group., a special session was devoted to bibliographic problems and observing campaigns. The Dean of the Faculty for Physics 0.£ the Ludwig-Maximilians-, Universitat welcomed the participants at the beginning of the Symposium. The meeting was closed by a summary talk, delivered by ~. P. Snow.
