A Short History of Cultural Studies - John Hartley - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

` A Short Histrory of Cultural Studies will prove a seminal text for its author''s erudition, wit and unmatched ability to re-embed abstract concepts and debates where they belong - in rich historical, political and cultural contexts'' - Cultural Studies Review ''Hartley''s book is refreshing, breathtaking, and quite a lot of fun. Given its relatively small size, the book can''t do everything, but it does introduce the reader to this rich area of contemporary academic life'' - Communication Research Trends ''An entertaining and innovative approach to the history of cultural studies'' - TOPIA: Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies `Cultural studies will never be the same again. Whether you''re new to the field or a tired old jade, John Hartley''s latest will have you sitting bolt upright in your seat. Each chapter is brimming with insight and innovation. A landmark book'' - Toby Miller Professor of Cultural Studies and Cultural Policy, New York University A Short History of Cultural Studies will be devoured by students by virtue of its uncluttered and often wickedly humorous style. But it will also concentrate the minds of those who lecture and research in the subject, by offering a novel and challenging account of the rise and temper of the subject today. This is the first history of cultural studies. Other books have explored the British and North American traditions, but this is the first guide to the ideas, purposes and controversies that have shaped the subject. The author sheds new light on neglected pioneers and a clear route map through the terrain. He provides lively critical narratives on a dazzling array of key figures including, Arnold, Barrell, Bennett, Carey, Fiske, Foucault, Grossberg, Hall, Hawkes, hooks, Hoggart, Leadbeater, Lissistzky, Malevich, Marx, McLuhan, McRobbie, D Miller, T Miller, Morris, Quiller-Couch, Ross, Shaw, Urry, Williams, Wilson, Wolfe and Woolf. He also examines a host of central themes in the subject including literary and political writing, publishing, civic humanism, political economy and Marxism, sociology, feminism, anthropology and the pedagogy of cultural studies.

The Nonresponse Challenge to Surveys and Statistics - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Nonresponse Challenge to Surveys and Statistics - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Surveys are the principal source of data not only for social science, but for consumer research, political polling, and federal statistics. In response to social and technological trends, rates of survey nonresponse have risen markedly in recent years, prompting observers to worry about the continued validity of surveys as a tool for data gathering. Newspaper stories, magazine articles, radio programs, television broadcasts, and Internet blogs are filled with data derived from surveys of one sort or another. Reputable media outlets generally indicate whether a survey is representative, but much of the data routinely bandied about in the media and on the Internet are not based on representative samples and are of dubious use in making accurate statements about the populations they purport to represent. Surveys are social interactions, and like all interactions between people, they are embedded within social structures and guided by shared cultural understandings. This issue of The ANNALS examines the difficulties with finding willing respondents to these surveys and how the changing structure of society, whether it be the changing family structure, mass immigration, rising inequality, or the rise of technology, has presented new issues to conducting surveys. This volume will be of interest to faculty and students who specialize in sociological movements as well as economic and immigration movements and its effect on surveying.

Making Pre-Algebra Come Alive - Alfred S. Posamentier - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Making Pre-Algebra Come Alive - Alfred S. Posamentier - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Activities in Pre-Algebra is a set of versatile enrichment exercises that covers a very broad range of mathematical topics and applications-from the Moebius strip to the googol. Several criteria have been used in developing the activities and in selecting the topics that are included. All of them bear heavily, and equally, on our concerns for curriculum goals and classroom management. Each activity is presented as a reproducible student investigation. It is followed by guidelines and notes for the teacher. Each activity is keyed to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards, Revised. This link to the NCTM standards allows teachers to facilitate linking classroom activities to specific state and school district content standards. First and foremost, the activities are meant to be motivational. As much as possible, we want this book to achieve the goal of being attractive to people who thought they didn′t like mathematics. To accomplish this, it is necessary for the activities to be quite different from what students encounter in their basal texts-different in both substance and form. This seems especially critical; no matter how excellent a basal text is being used, nearly every class experiences the "blahs." Unfortunately, this sort of boredom is often well entrenched long before the teacher and perhaps even the students are aware of it. Presenting activities on a regular basis gives the variety and change of pace needed to sustain interest in any subject.

Challenging Learning Through Feedback - James A. Nottingham - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Using feedback to enhance learning Feedback has the potential to dramatically improve student learning – if done correctly. In fact, providing high quality feedback is one of the most critical roles of a teacher. But if feedback is not done correctly it can have a minimal – or even negative effect – on learning. Challenging Learning Through Feedback provides educators with the tools they need to establish clear learning intentions and success criteria in order to craft high quality feedback and avoid common feedback mistakes. Readers will learn - - When feedback is (and isn’t) working - - How to design feedback so that it answers three essential questions - - Strategies for crafting clear Learning Intentions and Success Criteria - - How to teach students to give high quality feedback to themselves and others Written by educational innovators James Nottingham and Jill Nottingham, this book is full of specific examples for educators who want to understand the qualities of excellent feedback and how to craft it. "Feedback – a noun or a verb? A separate practice or an integral part of the learning process? Something we do ‘to students’ or ‘with students’? The Nottinghams sort it all out for us – the ‘what,’ ‘why,’ and ‘how’ of the process and the practice of feedback." Barb Pitchford, Co-authorLeading Impact Teams: Building a Culture of Efficacy (2016) "Finally a practical book on feedback for teachers! It is written with the teacher in mind, lesson plan in hand, and relevant to all in education. The perfect school-wide study book!" Lisa Cebelak, Education ConsultantGrand Rapids, MI

Knowing Capitalism - Nigel Thrift - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Knowing Capitalism - Nigel Thrift - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

''This is an ambitious, original, and complex treatment of key aspects of contemporary capitalism. It makes a major contribution because it profoundly destabilizes the scholarship on globalization, the so-called new economy, information technology, distinct contemporary business cultures and practices'' - Saskia Sassen, author of Globalization and its Discontents ''Nigel Thrift offers us the sort of cultural analysis of global capitalism that has long been needed - one that emphasizes the innovative energy of global capitalism. The book avoids stale denouncements and offers instead a view of capitalism as a form of practice'' - Karin Knorr Cetina, Professor of Sociology, University of Konstanz, Germany Capitalism is well known for producing a form of existence where `everything solid melts into air''. But what happens when capitalism develops theories about itself? Are we moving into a condition in which capitalism can be said to possess a brain? These questions are pursued in this sparkling and thought-provoking book. Thrift looks at what he calls ''the cultural circuit of capitalism'', the mechanism for generating new theories of capitalism. The book traces the rise of this circuit back to the 1960s when a series of institutions locked together to interrogate capitalism, to the present day, when these institutions are moving out to the Pacific basin and beyond. What have these theories produced? How have they been implicated in the speculative bubbles that characterized the late twentieth century? What part have they played in developing our understanding of human relations? Building on an inter-disciplinary approach which embraces the core social sciences, Thrift outlines an exciting new theory for understanding capitalism. His book is of interest to readers in geography, social theory, anthropology and cultural economics.
