What impact does caring for an elderly parent have on the lives of middle-aged (and sometimes elderly) caregiving offspring? Does a relationship exist between the stress produced by dependency and the level of abuse toward a given elderly person? Reporting the long-awaited results of an extensive study by one of the leading authorities in this field, this volume examines these and other pertinent questions regarding this growing social problem. In addition, this volume addresses the intent behind so-called abuse treatment, the passive/active continuum of abuse, and the relationship between perceived success or failure of the caregiving and the amount of abuse. Elder Abuse and Family Care is must reading for both professionals and students in the areas of family violence, family studies, criminology, psychology, and aging. "This fine study by Steinmetz and her colleagues gives substance to what we were only glimpsing three or more decades ago and, further, focuses ′on the relationship between increased levels of dependency, stress, and feelings of burden and elder abuse.′ . . . There are numerous commendable features to the Steinmetz study. There are, for example, abundant, illustrative, verbatim quotes that give caretakers of elders a chance to express their feeling-states and conceptualizations about their situations. . . . In sum, there is much to be gained from [this study] for both those who are professionally concerned about gerontologic and geriatric research on support systems for elders and those who are lay persons who are in need of understanding what the passage of time does to person to whom we are closely related or care about." --International Social Science Review "The author offers valuable information to researchers, counselors, and clinicians working with ′generationally-inverse′ families or individuals responsible for elder abuse." --Family Violence Bulletin "There is much to be gained from the Steinmetz study for both those who are professionally concerned about gerontologic and geriatric research on support systems for elders and those who are lay persons who are in need of understanding what the passage of time does to a person to whom we are closely related or care about. Implicit in context are the need for larger social systems than families to offer more than lip service to elder citizens, as well as the need for individuals to anticipate inevitable aging and what strategies maximize life satisfaction for themselves and their kin." --International Social Science Review "Steinmetz′s findings provide a dynamic picture of the complexities and realities involved in families caring for frail elderly. The work is well written, and clearly addresses a topic of growing interest and awareness in the U.S. today. Highly recommended. . . for graduate and undergraduate students in human services or related programs." --Choice "The work is timely. . . and well organized. Appendices include the study questionnaire, a discussion of research design issues, additional tables and findings from the service provider component of the study. These materials may be helpful to those planning studies of elder abuse in their own communities." --Contemporary Sociology "From the comments of the interviewees, which are generously sprinkled throughout the text, the reader obtains a very graphic and disturbing account of the burden and stress of caregiving." --Disability Studies Quarterly "Perhaps the most valuable information in this book is contained in the profuse citation of caregivers′ interviews, which provides a wealth of insight into their feelings, perceived burdens, and predominantly successful coping strategies. . . provide[s] valuable insight into the caregiver′s world." --CARES: Center for Aging Research and Educational Services "There is much to be gained from the Steinmetz study for both those who are professionally concerned about gerontologic and geriatric research on support systems for elders and those who are lay persons who are in need of understanding what the passage of time does to persons to whom we are closely related or care about." --International Social Science Review

Strategy as Practice - Paula Jarzabkowski - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

`An important and extremely welcome addition to the strategic management field. In this book the author builds on the work of an emerging community of scholars to lay out theoretical and methodological underpinnings of an activity-based framework for applying the practice lens to strategy′ - Academy of Management Review `Paula Jarzabkowski has astutely signaled an agenda for future scholarship that will no doubt fuel the continued growth of this subfield′ - Organization Studies `Pioneering work. Communication, Technology, and Politics in the Information Age - Gerald Sussman - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Communication, Technology, and Politics in the Information Age - Gerald Sussman - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

How do politics influence communication technology? What forces shape technological enterprise? How do politics, society, and technology intersect? To answer these questions, author Gerald Sussman looks beyond the techno-functional aspects of product and process and focuses instead on the human agents and institutions involved in the making of information technologies. Sussman begins with a look at theory and then reviews the social history of communication technology. He next examines contemporary issues in the U.S. context, from the diminishing of citizenship and work experiences to the growing use of commercial and political surveillance. In so doing, he reveals to readers "just who the heavy truckers are on the information highway and what that means for the rest of us." The author concludes by examining the global dimension of the information society, pointing out effects on developing countries and alternatives to the hegemonic tendencies of the U.S. and world economies. Through his carefully detailed and critical analysis, Sussman demystifies the political and social inner workings of communication technologies and guides readers to an understanding of the real meaning of the information revolution. Ideal as a main text or as supplement for courses in American politics, contemporary political issues, the political economy of communication, and public policy, Communication, Technology, and Politics in the Information Age will be an invaluable resource to students and academics in the fields of communication, political science, sociology, and mass communication.

Sociology and the Public Agenda - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Sociology and the Public Agenda - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Published in Cooperation with the American Sociological Society Sociology has had a long and convoluted relationship with the public policy community. While the field has historically considered its mission one of effecting social change, in recent decades this has become only a minor part of the sociological agenda. The editor of this volume, MacArthur Fellow and former ASA President William Julius Wilson, asserts that sociology′s ostrich-like stance threatens to leave the discipline in a position of irrelevance to the world at large and compromises the support of policymakers, funders, media, and the public. Wilson′s vision is of a sociology attuned to the public agenda, influencing public policy through both short and long-range analysis from a sociological perspective. Using a variety of policy issues, perspectives, methods, and cases, the distinguished contributors to this volume both demonstrate and emphasize Wilson′s ideas. Undergraduates, graduate students, professionals, and academics in sociology, political science, policy studies, and human services will find this argument for sociology′s civic duty to be both compelling and refreshing. "The eighteen chapters on issues ranging from cultural and historical definitions of citizenship to American welfare policies and American corporate mergers are strong examples of solid social research, where authors draw out policy implications and, based on their research, make policy proposals. . . . Sociology and the Public Agenda is an insightful book for scholars of social policy, and also those interested in research design issues. The book is very relevant for political scientists engaged in policy research, interested in innovative research designs, and wondering about the ′place′ of the social scientist in setting public agendas." -Policy Currents

Lyndon Baines Johnson - Thomas Langston - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Lyndon Baines Johnson - Thomas Langston - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Each volume in the American Presidents Reference Series is organized around an individual presidency and gathers a host of biographical, analytical, and primary source historical material that will analyze the presidency and bring the president, his administration, and his times to life. The series focuses on key moments in U.S. political history as seen through the eyes of the most influential presidents to take the oath of office. Unique headnotes provide the context to data, tables and excerpted primary source documents. Lyndon Baines Johnson was born in 1908. He was first elected to Congress in 1937 and reelected twice. When he set his sights on the U.S. Senate in 1940 he was defeated. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Johnson was the first member of the House to volunteer for active military duty. In 1949 he became a U.S. Senator and was elected its majority leader in 1955. Johnson sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1960, but lost to John F. Kennedy, who would offer him the vice president spot. In a close election, the Kennedy/Johnson ticket prevailed over Nixon/Lodge. In 1963 Vice President Johnson was part of the motorcade traveling through Dallas, Texas when Lee Harvey Oswald assassinated Kennedy. Johnson, while aboard Air Force One, was sworn in as 36th president of the United States. His administration crafted and oversaw several great moments in American history, including civil rights efforts, the Great Society, and technological advances. These events were, to some degree, overshadowed by the poor economy, civil unrest, and the U.S involvement in the Vietnam War. Troubled by his rapidly declining public approval, he did not seek re-election. This new volume on the presidency of Lyndon Baines Johnson will cover: - - His political skills - - Replacing JFK - - The Vietnam War - - The Economy - - The Great Society - - Civil Rights - - Technology and Space -

The Politics of Consumption / The Consumption of Politics - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Politics of Consumption / The Consumption of Politics - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

In recent years American and European societies have confronted increasing concerns over the effects of globalization, environmental degradation, and excessive consumption, as well as questions about the ability of civic society to address these concerns. As citizens are pushed to consume more and to celebrate the individual to the detriment of civic engagement, the interplay between consumption, markets, media, politics, and the citizen-consumer remains a complex and provocative topic. Has civil society declined in favor of consumer society? Can we separate civic culture from consumer culture? Some scholars argue that the rise of political consumerism or lifestyle politics – where socially conscious consumers support or boycott products and corporations in ways that demonstrate their political views – illustrates just how tightly interwoven consumption and civic duty have become. Furthermore, political campaigns as well as social movements and initiatives have become steeped in marketing tactics using branding, staged media events, and market segmentation strategies. What are the effects of socially conscious consumerism on civil society? In October 2006, an international conference titled "The Politics of Consumption/The Consumption of Politics" drew leading scholars from Europe and North America to discuss these challenging questions and issues. Using theory and research, the conference spurred lively discussion as well as the insightful papers included in this special volume of The ANNALS . Central themes included in this volume: - The relations between consumers, citizens, and the state - Consumer and citizen responses to the market - The branding of politicians and social movements - Political consumerism as a form of activism Scholars and students will find that while these essays address crucial issues, they also shed light on the levels of complexity of this important topic, serving as a springboard for further research on the politics of consumption. Drawing from a myriad of disciplines, including political science, sociology, communication, media studies, and economics, this volume is a must-have for scholars, professionals, and policymakers who want to better understand modern consumer society and its implications for the political and civic arena.

HIV Care - Laurie J. Andrews - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

HIV Care - Laurie J. Andrews - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

The treatment of HIV is perhaps the most demanding and complex aspect of work for today′s health care provider. Often the first decision providers and patients make is whether or not to test for the virus; this is only the first in a series of involved--and often troubling--decisions confronting both provider and patient. HIV Care considers many of the diverse elements affecting and affected by this illness, from its physical and neuropsychological manifestations to its legal and financial implications. Addressing concerns about HIV testing, the authors introduce a practical risk assessment tool and discuss some of the subjects and approaches germane to pre- and posttest counseling. Medical management is surveyed, exploring not only traditional therapies but experimental and complementary ones such as acupuncture, exercise, and diet. The psychological, psychosocial, and spiritual impacts of HIV are also considered, often generating conflicting perspectives. Finally, pragmatic issues including housing and home care, financial assistance, and legal issues pertaining to the counseling of HIV-positive patients are presented. Appendixes record laws related to HIV by state, catalog available legal assistance, and list state and national resources for HIV patients. Offering a thorough look at the most recent developments in HIV treatment, this handbook will serve as a powerful reference guide for practitioners in primary care, nursing, and public health, or anyone working with HIV patients. "The authors have compiled an extremely useful and easy-to-use handbook that should be on the desk of all primary care providers who treat HIV-positive individuals. Of particular interest are the legal issues where the state laws for each state are outlined concerning reporting, informed consent, confidentiality, affirmative duty to disclose, quarantine, mandatory testing, and transmission crime. This is a highly recommended book for all medical, public, and academic libraries; but especially for the professional primary care provider. It answers many questions for those who have not had the years of experience of dealing with HIV-positive patients." --AIDS Book Review Journal
