Graphing Data - Gary T. Henry - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Graphing Data - Gary T. Henry - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Gary Henry has provided an excellent little book which discusses not only the basic ′techniques for display and analysis′ which are available, but offers some very timely hints for their effective use. His audience is the ′applied researcher′. . . anybody engaged in empirical research at all. . . . He does. . . provide empirically grounded and valuable advice throughout on how best to design effective, accurate and reliable displays. . . . he provides a theoretical framework to guide the design of competent graphical displays. . . . Graphing Data. . . is well worth a good read. --Randy Banks in ESRC Data Archive Bulletin "Graphing Data is an accurate and factual presentation of effective techniques for graphically displaying quantitative data. The ideas postulated within the book represent effective techniques for graphing quantitative data and are consistent with the ideas of contemporary authors about the visual display of quantitative information. Graphing Data provides guidelines for researchers with desktop publishing capability who desire to incorporate graphs displaying quantitative data into research and evaluation reports. . . . The book is worthy of consideration as a course text for the introduction to graphing data or as a supplementary text for an introductory course on statistics where communicating research results are discussed. . . . Graphing Data serves as a legitimate reference for selecting appropriate data displays depending on the type of data and the purpose of data. . . . I would recommend this book for researchers and scholars interested in the effective communication of quantitative data to broad audiences." --Robert C. Branch in a prepublication review for Evaluation and Program Planning How can applied researchers present and analyze their research data more effectively? By using the techniques described in this volume, social scientists will be able to make their data more accessible to nontechnical audiences. This book is packed with examples that illustrate the characteristics of effective graphical displays of data and provides solid techniques for producing graphs. Graphing Data begins with a discussion of what has been learned from the visual perception research that relates to graphing data. It then explores the analysis tasks that apply most often: the use of graphs for data summarization, the display of multiple units, ways to improve tabular displays, graphical alternatives to tables, two-variable scatterplots as graphical support for correlation and regression, how to show variation and summary statistics together, and how to create more effective legends and titles on graphical displays.

Analyzing Crime Patterns - John H. Mollenkopf - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Crime control continues to be a growth industry, despite the drop in crime indicators throughout the nation. This volume shows how state-of-the-art geographic information systems (GIS) are revolutionizing urban law enforcement, with an award-winning program in New York City leading the way. Electronic "pin mapping" is used to display the incidence of crime, to stimulate effective strategies and decision making, and to evaluate the impact of recent activity applied to hotspots. The expert information presented by 12 contributors will guide departments without such tools to understand the latest technologies and successfully employ them. Besides describing and assessing cutting-edge techniques of crime mapping, this book emphasizes: * the organizational and intellectual contexts in which spatial analysis of crime takes place, * the technical problems of defining, measuring, interpreting, and predicting spatial concentrations of crime, * the common use of New York City crime data, and * practical applications of what is known (e.g., a review of mapping and analysis software packages using the same data set). Students, academics, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers in the areas of criminal justice, corrections, geography, social problems, law and government, public administration, and public policy analysis will need to look at the interdisciplinary nature of both GIS and spatial dimensions of crime in order to 1) 1) comprehend the variety of different approaches 1) 1) address important analytic problems, 1) 1) reassess public facilities and resources, and 1) 1) prepare to respond more quickly to emerging hotspots.

Attention Deficits and Hyperactivity in Children - Stephen P. Hinshaw - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Attention Deficits and Hyperactivity in Children - Stephen P. Hinshaw - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Another winner in Sage′s Developmental Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry Series, this time by a University of California, Berkeley psychologist. . . . Stephen P. Hinshaw′s chief goals are to provide adequate background information and to evaluate certain key debates and core questions that remain unacceptably answered at the present time. . . . He has managed to convey in accurate and readable fashion a remarkable amount of information in a relatively short space. Advances, challenges, and unresolved problems in diverse but relevant areas are meticulously analyzed and placed in context. As the comprehensive and well-chosen reference list bears testimony, the book is enriched by the fact that the author′s own work plays an important role in elaborating many of the key features of this still little understood but very prevalent disorder. This book will be of value to students, trainees, and professionals in both academic disciplines and more clinical areas. --Child & Family Behavior Therapy Children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often have major difficulties with achievement in school, and they often exhibit defiance, aggression, and other antisocial behaviors. Although there is abundant literature on ADHD, misinformation abounds. Serving to synthesize findings from the vast and often confusing array of information on this subject, Attention Deficits and Hyperactivity in Children provides concrete information regarding basic clinical, conceptual, diagnostic, etiologic, and treatment-related issues on ADHD. This volume illustrates and evaluates several key debates that have confronted the field for many years: Is there a valid syndrome characterized by attention deficits and/or hyperactivity? What tools can assessors use to gain optimal information about the disorder? Has the field achieved consensus with respect to the nature or underlying mechanisms of the behavioral difficulties these children display? Which factors predict subsequent functioning in adolescence and adulthood? Due to the great diversity of characteristics and causal influences related to ADHD, the author considers many perspectives including clinical, developmental, psychodiagnostic, psychobiologic, environmental/familial, and social cognitive viewpoints.

The Disneyization of Society - Alan Bryman - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Disneyization of Society - Alan Bryman - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

`Alan Bryman has expanded on his internationally well-known work on Disney theme parks and Disneyization to create a fascinating and highly readable book. It should prove of interest to beginning students in a number of different courses and fields, as well as to scholars interested in culture and consumption. There is no question that the model created by Disney, and emulated in whole or in part by many organizations and in many settings, will continue to influence social structure and culture well into the future. This is an important book about a significant social process. And, it manages to be a fun read, as well!′ - George Ritzer, author of McDonaldization and Professor of Sociology, University of Maryland `Bryman′s analysis of contemporay consumption is full of detail and provides a host of examples ranging from restaurants and hotels, to theme parks, zoos and sports stadia. Without doubt students will find it an accessible text, one that should allow them to think about consumption, familiar consumer products, settings and activities, sociologically′ - Barry Smart, Professor of Sociology, University of Portsmouth `Bryman′s dissection of Disneyization is a timely and significant contribution to the growing literature on Disney. In fact, his excellent analysis of the extension of Disneyization throughout society explains why we should care about the Disney phenomenon at all. This is not only an important book for Disney scholars, but for any one interested in the future of modern society′ - Janet Wasko Professor of Communication Studies, University of Oregon This is an agenda-setting new work in the sociology of culture and modern society. It argues that the contemporary world is increasingly converging towards the characteristics of the Disney theme parks. This process of convergence is revealed in: the growing influence of themed environments in settings like restaurants, shops, hotels, tourism and zoos; the growing trend towards social environments that are driven by combinations of forms of consumption: shopping, eating out, gambling, visiting the cinema, watching sports; the growth in cachet awarded to brands based on licensed merchandise; and the increased prominence of work that is a performance in which the employees have to display certain emotions and generally convey impressions as though working in a theatrical event. This insightful book demonstrates the importance of control and surveillance in consumer culture. Of interest to a wide variety of students studying in business, sociology, cultural studies, media studies and leisure studies courses this will also be of interest to anybody interested in understanding the intricacies of modern society.

"There can be no doubt that book like this is needed. The idea that the author has to provide information beyond the SPSS tutorials is invaluable. Great conversational style and good examples! I like the idea of inputting data and working through the procedures in real life. The exercises are great practice for learning and sharpening the skills described."--Geni Cowan, Educational Administration, California State University, Sacramento --Geni Cowan, Written in an easy-to-read, straightforward manner, Next Steps With SPSS introduces readers to intermediate and advanced SPSS skills. These skills are introduced and illustrated with sample programs designed to apply powerful techniques in data handling and analysis, with the output from these programs presented and interpreted. The book is organized so that it builds increasingly advanced syntax coding skills, starting with the handling of complex data files and then moving to coverage of looping and macro skills. The book then switches to more windows-oriented skills suitable for working with SPSS output (as in pivot tables and interactive graphics) and for running SPSS in an alternative mode (as in a production facility). The book returns to coding skills by introducing the more advanced topics of the scripting facility (which has broad application to handling data and creating output) and the matrix command language. Throughout the book, Einspruch provides pedagogical aids for the reader, such as: - Detailed examples provide step-by-step illustrations of each step in a procedure - End-of-chapter exercises (with solutions provided in the Appendix) - Boldface text indicates operations or choices that the reader will need to make when running SPSS - Opening chapter "alerts" give readers a quick synopsis of what they will learn as well as the recommended SPSS skill level - Chapter glossaries provide readers with a list and definition of command words covered in the chapter After reading this book, readers will be able to perform: looping functions that can be used to repeatedly perform a set of commands; the macro facility that efficiently performs complex and repetitive tasks; pivot tables that can be manipulated to display results in different ways; interactive graphics can be used to modify charts without re-running an entire procedure; the production facility that can run routine, time consuming analyses unattended; and, the matrix command language which handles matrix algebra computations and allows you to write statistical routines. Enhancing Evaluation Use - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Enhancing Evaluation Use - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Enhancing Evaluation Use: Insights from Internal Evaluation Units offers invaluable insights from real evaluators who share strategies they have adopted through their own experiences in evaluation. Readers will learn about the challenges, solutions, and lessons drawn from the experience of evaluators working in a wide range of organizations. Referencing the latest literature, contributors discuss factors that help or undermine attempts to foster an evaluative thinking and learning culture within an organization. Applicable in a wide range of situations, their accounts demonstrate the initiative and innovative thinking they use to address challenges in various, sometimes complex, evaluation settings. Questions at the end of each chapter stimulate thought and discussions about the issues raised and allow readers to apply their findings to their own situations. "This book speaks to a cutting-edge topic, that is, the potential to generalize program evaluation expertise to larger organizational questions, and the cases from multiple international contexts represent a unique feature." —John Clayton Thomas, Georgia State University "The use of actual cases to highlight major concepts in evaluation in the public sector is a great feature." —Danica G. Hays, Old Dominion University "The text provides practical information from a variety of organizational contexts and the integration of international experiences provides for expanded discussion of evaluation theory and practice." —Kathleen Norris, Plymouth State University "The key strengths of this book lie in its national, supra-national and international organizational contexts, its consistency in insider perspectives, and the detailed examples provided." —Donna Haig Friedman, University of Massachusetts, Boston "The book of essays reviewed here was edited by two eminent evaluators. It fills an important gap in the literature: in pursuit of improved quality of evaluation products, evaluation thinkers have lavished attention on evaluation methods, ethics and use but they have sorely neglected evaluation governance issues and have largely failed to probe the workings of evaluation within organizations. Yet, most evaluations are commissioned by (or undertaken within) organizations. The choices organizations make in structuring evaluation functions and designing evaluation processes have a major bearing on the relevance, validity and usefulness of evaluations. Refreshingly, the book offers fresh mental models and practical lessons about evaluation systems and practices adopted in diverse organizational settings. All contributors to the book are seasoned practitioners. They hail from national, supranational and international organizations and many of them have trespassed across these thematic and organizational boundaries. They all are equipped to draw on a vast reservoir of hands---on experience as evaluation commissioners, managers, internal evaluators or external practitioners. Remarkably, they also display considerable familiarity with relevant themes treated by the organization management and evaluation literature. Given its pragmatic focus the book is bound to elicit broad based interest among evaluation practitioners. While it addresses familiar dilemmas and challenges (evaluation independence, evaluation utilization, organizational learning, nurturing of an evaluation culture, etc.) it does so from the distinctive perspective of "insiders" who have had to contend with a variety of organizational constraints and management pressures. Revealingly most contributors find good reasons to be optimistic about the possibility of positive change. The stage is set by John Mayne whose introductory and authoritative chapter identifies the critical importance of organizational factors in the utilization of evaluation results. This is followed by Bastiaan de Laat’s chapter which puts forward an ingenious analytical construct: the "tricky triangle" of relationships that links commissioners, evaluators and evaluands. Specifically De Laat unmasks and assesses the different and complex configurations that result from this triangular interplay. Penny Hawkins’ elegant contribution underlines the importance of evaluation independence. It highlights the considerable impact that the electoral cycle may have on evaluation approaches. It also reveals that indigenous cultures may present formidable obstacles to the very notion of external evaluative oversight. The next chapter penned by Marlene Laubli’s is equally perceptive in tracing the creative adaptation that the evaluation function underwent in response to changes in the organizational force field of the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health’s Evaluation Unit. In a similar vein Erica Wimbush provides a lucid exposition of the strategies used to bridge evaluative knowledge and management action in Scotland’s public health agency. Still with
