Observing Development of the Young Child - Janice J. Beaty - Bog - Pearson Education (US) - Plusbog.dk

Used successfully in early childhood programs all over the country since its inception, this unique and mainstay text looks at children’s development in every domain, preparing students to become skilled observers, with concrete detail about how to record what is observed, how to interpret the data, and to become adept at using the observations to plan for learning. The new edition of Jan Beaty’s best-selling book has undergone an extensive revision. The book’s original features and organization remain, while new research, issues, and more extensive coverage of observation is included in the new edition. Chapters 1 and 2 were reorganized and expanded to include the basics of observation. The text itself has become more streamlined, more reader-friendly, with fewer chapters (12 instead of 14), yet with many more boxed ideas. Other examples of observation tools that have been added include running records, rubrics, rating scales, portfolios, documentation panels, and other forms of visual documentation. Strategies for working with dual language learners are included throughout the book. The reorganization and restructuring of the text improves on its past success; the simplification and improvements will appeal to students and instructors alike. What emerges is the most current observation text on the market, modernized to reach today’s population of early childhood education students.

A Companion to Baugh & Cable's A History of the English Language - Albert Baugh - Bog - Pearson Education (US) - Plusbog.dk

A Companion to Baugh & Cable's A History of the English Language - Albert Baugh - Bog - Pearson Education (US) - Plusbog.dk

In the spirit of the main text, the Companion pays attention to the linguistic effects of social, political, and literary events. The maps are designed to set the geographical contexts for these cultural influences during the Indo-European period, the Middle Ages, and the eras of the British Empire and of American ascendancy. The pre-chapter on “The Sounds of English” contains phonetic information and exercises that should be helpful in most of the chapters that follow. The “Questions for Review” that begin each chapter give an overview of the most important topics in each period and serve as a checklist of items that should be familiar in any discussion of the history of English. Now that we are into the second decade of the twenty-first century, a twelfth chapter has been added to the main text. Because English as a global language is a central issue in its history at this point, the questions for review in Chapter 12 raise topics for discussion concerning the major languages of the world, prospects for the future, and less obvious issues such as the relative “complexity” of languages.   The headings for most sections are followed by a corresponding section number in the History. On many topics the amount of exposition preceding the exercises varies more or less inversely with the amount in the History, the idea being to have a full discussion of important topics without a duplication between the two books.

Why Neuroscience Matters in the Classroom - Kathleen Scalise - Bog - Pearson Education (US) - Plusbog.dk

Why Neuroscience Matters in the Classroom - Kathleen Scalise - Bog - Pearson Education (US) - Plusbog.dk

Primarily for pre-service and in-service teachers in Grades K-12 What every teacher should know to bring insights from three brain sciences–neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and educational research–into instructional practice. This text provides the means for every teacher to build a base of understanding in three essential learning sciences–neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and educational research–as a foundation that they will use throughout their careers. By combining all three fields of the learning sciences, it puts the pieces together in one volume, makes them relevant to the work of every teacher and learner, and fills a gap in teacher education texts. The brain-based principles presented show how the brain and mind work in relation to what we know of behavior and learning in the classroom. The foundational information is presented in a series of key concepts the authors call The CORE. It’s based on research done expressly for this book by the University of Oregon, College of Education in collaboration with the Columbia University Department of Neuroscience. Using a technique called saturation evaluation to explore a wealth of research-based resources, these groups identified what could reasonably constitute essential understandings of brain science for teachers. The CORE fundamentals are summarized in a framework comprised of seven Guiding Principles, each amplified by a related set of Big Ideas. Concise, accessible, and structured especially for teacher education, the work is understandable and relevant to all teachers, even those who say they are science shy. Learning points introduce the reader to what’s to come and Scenarios summarize the material that’s covered, including such topics as neural plasticity and the basics of physical change; how nutrition, exercise, and sleep may affect learning; the major roles that emotion, attitude, and stress play in brain function; and more.
