New National and Post-colonial Literatures - - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

New National and Post-colonial Literatures provides a comparative and up-to-date introduction to colonial, new national and post-colonial literatures, and related criticism. While free of jargon and intended as an introduction to those new to the subject, the collection of original essays contributes to the ongoing discussion about the new literatures, and will also interest the specialist. Many of the contributors are acknowledged leaders in their fields. Besides examining the main concerns, opinions, and theories that have shaped discussion in this area, there is also a detailed bibliography of primary and secondary sources. The approach is comparative and by topic. The essays range from discussion of colonial literatures through nationalism to the internationalization of literature, multiculturalism, writing by post-colonial women, and analysis of the literature of the native peoples of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Most of the essays discuss creative writers and critics, including V. S. Naipaul, Derek Walcott, Chinua Achebe, Vikram Seth, Fred D''Aguiar, Anita Desai, and Jamaica Kincaid. Three essays discuss the history, development, and problems of theories of post-colonialism. New National and Post-colonial Literatures also centres upon the problems of categorizing literatures, and their politicization, and recognizes that in a time of massive migration, rapid international communication, and increased demands by minorities, national cultures are less stable than in the past and the very notion of national identity is changing.

New Spirits of Capitalism? - - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

New Spirits of Capitalism? - - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

After many years in which it appeared to be losing the pre-eminent position it had occupied in the lexicon of the social and human sciences, the term ''capitalism'' has once again become a matter of critical concern, both theoretically and substantively, in a range of disciplinary fields. The global financial and environmental crises, and the shifting of economic power associated with the rise of the BRICs and the sovereign debt contagion in the Eurozone, for example, have all put the norms, practices, and devices of capitalist conduct back under the spotlight. Luc Boltanski and Eve Chiapello''s The New Spirit of Capitalism has become a seminal text since its publication, sparking debate about the meaning, significance, and effects of contemporary changes in economic and organizational life, and becoming a reference point in political discussions about the welfare state, collective action in a ''networked'' world, and reconciliation of the interests of social justice with the ''laws of the markets''. This edited book offers the first comprehensive attempt to examine the power and reach of Boltanski and Chiapello''s argument, the text''s theoretical and methodological perspectives, tools, and techniques, and to do so in relation to the development of neo-liberal capitalism in the period since its original publication and in particular the culmination of these developments in the ongoing crisis since the financial collapse of 2007-8. The volume provides both a balanced critique and overview of New Spirit, but also shows how it can be used in a variety of empirical studies to develop new insights into the functioning and regulation of capitalism in the contemporary era. The volume brings together leading scholars from a range of disciplinary fields such as Sociology, Management and Organization Studies, and Geography. Luc Boltanksi and Eve Chiapello also offer their thoughts on the continuing relevance of New Spirit over a decade after its publication, and in the context of contemporary global economic and political developments.

A Mind Of Her Own - Anne Campbell - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

A Mind Of Her Own - Anne Campbell - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

When Darwin proposed that females shape evolution by being choosy in their choice of male suitors, his Victorian contemporaries were shocked that he accorded so much importance to women. But this early view of the female role was far from revolutionary: They were simply allowed to be passive ''quality controllers'' of male genes.Recent years have shown that the inert ''coy female'' is a myth. For a male, a high sex drive and a taste for variety may improve his fitness. But for a female, successful reproduction goes far beyond copulation. She bears the brunt of parental investment with each child represents years of commitment from pregnancy and breast-feeding to provisioning and guarding. For her genetic lineage to survive, she must do this better than her rivals. Each of us comes from a line of winning mothers. Women are, after all, the first and default sex. It is women who bear children. A child born with a single X chromosome can survive, but not one with a single Y. In a population crash, a female-biased population will survive far better than a male-heavy one. In this book, Anne Campbell redresses the balance of evolutionary theory in favour of women. She examines how selection pressures have shaped the female mind over thousands of generations: Their emotions, friendship, competition, aggression and mate choice. She brings together data from neuroscience, endocrinology, anthropology, primatology as well as psychology to address fundamental questions about sex differences.... Why are women less aggressive than men? Were women designed for monogamy or promiscuity? What do women compete for? Why is conflict between males and females inevitable? What makes each woman unique? Have contraception and IVF subverted the process of natural selection?
