The problem of free will arises from ordinary, commonsense reflection. Shaun Nichols examines these ordinary attitudes from a naturalistic perspective. He offers a psychological account of the origins of the problem of free will. According to his account the problem arises because of two naturally emerging ways of thinking about ourselves and the world, one of which makes determinism plausible while the other makes determinism implausible. Although contemporary cognitive science does not settle whether choices are determined, Nichols argues that our belief in indeterminist choice is grounded in faulty inference and should be regarded as unjustified. However, even if our belief in indeterminist choice is false, it''s a further substantive question whether that means that free will doesn''t exist. Nichols argues that, because of the flexibility of reference, there is no single answer to whether free will exists. In some contexts, it will be true to say ''free will exists''; in other contexts, it will be false to say that. With this substantive background in place, Bound promotes a pragmatic approach to prescriptive issues. In some contexts, the prevailing practical considerations suggest that we should deny the existence of free will and moral responsibility; in other contexts the practical considerations suggest that we should affirm free will and moral responsibility. This allows for the possibility that in some contexts, it is morally apt to exact retributive punishment; in other contexts, it can be apt to take up the exonerating attitude of hard incompatibilism.

Julia Annas presents a study of Plato''s account of the relation of virtue to law: how it developed from the Republic to the Laws, and how his ideas were taken up by Cicero and by Philo of Alexandria. Annas shows that, rather than rejecting the approach to an ideal society in the Republic (as generally thought), Plato is in both dialogues concerned with the relation of virtue to law, and obedience to law, and presents, in the Laws, a more careful and sophisticated account of that relation. His approach in the Laws differs from his earlier one, because he now tries to build from the political cultures of actual societies (and their histories) instead of producing a theoretical thought-experiment. Plato develops an original project in which obedience to law is linked with education to promote understanding of the laws and of the virtues which obedience to them promote. Annas also explores how this project appeals independently to the very different later writers Cicero and Philo of Alexandria.

This compendium contains fifty-two epistles offering synoptic accounts of the classical sciences and philosophies of the age; divided into four classificatory parts, it treats themes in mathematics, logic, natural philosophy, psychology, metaphysics, and theology, in addition to didactic fables. Epistles 39 and 40 return to the Aristotelian philosophy of certain earlier Epistles. Yet the topics taken up here are considered by the Ikhwan in light of theological issues, affording an occasion to refute eternalism. Epistle 39 explains movement and rest, the kinds of physical movement, and the species of moved beings, before introducing the divine Mover and the idea that when He ceases to move the world, it will end. The highly composite Epistle 40 addresses themes beyond the various types of causes and effects, including ''divine gifts'', God''s origination and organization of the world, emanation, and the frequently invoked analogy of numbers. Drawing heavily on al-Kindi''s risala of the same name, the main section of Epistle 41: ''On the Definitions and Descriptions'' conforms to the title, defining variously categorized phenomena; then follows a diverse range of chapters detailing colours, numbers, ratios, and geometry. The detailed survey of the world presented in these three Epistles concludes the penultimate section of the encyclopaedia, on soul and intellect.

This volume completes the publication of the ancient Greek and Etruscan vases in the collection of the Reading Museum Service, most of which are displayed at the Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology, University of Reading (39 other vases were published in Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum, Great Britain 12, University of Reading, 1954). Most of the vases are published here for the first time, with new attributions to identifiable vase painters or workshops. Painter/workshop attributions, fabric identifications, and iconographic discussions enlighten the reader with regard to new findings based on excavations and other fieldwork. The fabrics detailed in this volume range chronologically from Minoan to early Hellenistic, and include South Italian (Apulian, Campanian, Lucanian, and Sicilian), Etruscan, possibly East Greek, as well as mainland (Attic, Boeotian, and Corinthian) wares. It includes patterned, black-glazed, and unglazed wares from almost all of these fabrics, as well as those with figural decoration. The collection therefore represents all the major fabrics of ancient Greek and Etruscan ceramics. The vases, many of which have recorded proveniences, share an interesting collections history, which is documented by Jill Greenaway in the Introduction.
