Earthworms for Monitoring Metal Contamination - Azwady Aziz - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Earthworms are widely used to assess the bioavailability and deleterious effects of metals in contaminated soils. This book discusses some of the direct and indirect methods that have recently been used to determine the ligand-binding speciation and the extent of the toxicologically-important bio-reactive metal and metalloid fractions in the cells of earthworms as receptor organisms. It proceeds to describe suites of cell-based biomarkers (e.g. morphometrics; neutral red retention time and immuno-competence assays), and their variants, that are more-or-less widely used for reporting chemically-evoked stress in earthworms under laboratory, semi-field, and field exposure conditions. NMR-based metabonomic profiling of the tissues of stressed earthworms is reviewed, and the potential of infra-red microspectroscopy for determining the biochemical profiles of specific cells in different functional states is highlighted. The way that the rapidly expanding genomic database is beginning to inform and propel research designed to further understanding of the fundamental mechanisms underpinning metal trafficking and toxicosis at the level of cells, partly through the provision of immuno-histochemical and in situ hybridisation ''tools'', is discussed. The book concludes with the prediction that the future will see the adoption of high-throughput cellular, as well as molecular-genetic, biomarker techniques in earthworm ecotoxicology, possibly with parallel metal fractionation measurements done as a desirable component of experimental design.

Kinetics of Binary Metal Hydride Decomposition - Ilia A. Chernov - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

From the point of view of hydrogen, desorption metal hydrides are extremely complex and interesting. Various metal hydrides differ so much, range in terms of decomposition temperatures and pressures and look like materials from separate classes. Many research articles are devoted to metal hydrides; many of them study the kinetics of dehydriding. However, there is still no complete understanding of the processes that govern kinetics. The reason is for the high number of factors that influence the rate of hydride decomposition and hydrogen desorption. First of all, properties of metal hydrides are diverse. The number of hydride phases, decomposition rates and ranges of absorbed energy are very different. The rates of hydrogen desorption, diffusion and phase transition also can influence the kinetics of dehydriding. The aim of this book is to summarise the authors research of dehydriding kinetics with electronic structures of the materials taken into account, and to determine which elementary processes influence the decomposition rates. The book is not a reference guide on the dehydriding rates of constants. Even more so, in order to keep the subject as simple as possible, the authors restrict the discussion only to binary hydrides when talking about basic dehydriding laws. It is possible, however, that ternary and more complex hydrides have their own unique properties. The authors describe experimental results through physically clear and well studied processes, such as desorption, diffusion, reaction of hydride decomposition, etc. as well as by using conservation laws. On the other hand, describing the entire process in the most general way, taking into account all of the possible reactions and excluding some on the grounds of experimental results, also seems unsound. The authors believe that complexity of models must be comparable to that of experimental data; additional factors should be taken into account only in order to improve poor fitting. The following factors seem the most important: Electronic properties of the hydride (type of bonding); phase morphology; incubation and nucleation; physically reasonable elementary processes mentioned above (diffusion, adsorption and desorption, decomposition and formation of the hydride phase, etc.); and the variety of powder particles. Over recent years, much effort has been made to activate the decomposition of magnesium and aluminium hydrides with the hope of finding appropriate materials for keeping hydrogen in solids aboard a vehicle. Most of the research dealt with mechanochemical activation (ie: ball milling in the presence of catalysts, often in hydrogen). The choice of catalytic materials is not always logical; this was one more reason for systemising the dehydriding kinetics. Naturally, activated materials must follow the general pattern of decomposing metal hydrides. A separate section is devoted to the activation of magnesium and aluminium hydrides; aside from mechanochemical, we also discuss the thermal and photoactivation of these materials.

Polyhedral Boron Hybrides in Use - Igor B Sivaev - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Polyhedral Boron Hybrides in Use - Igor B Sivaev - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

This book is designed to highlight the current status and perspectives of application of polyhedral boron compounds and their metal complexes. The main attention is paid to application of polyhedral boron hydrides in medicine including boron neutron capture therapy for cancer, radionuclide diagnostics and therapy, as well as anti-tumour activity of some metal derivatives of carboranes. Boron neutron capture therapy - a binary cancer treatment based upon the interaction of two relatively harmless species, a 10B nucleus and a thermal neutron, which results in the formation of the highly energetic 4He and 7Li as products. These fission products have an effective range of ~10 ìm in tissue, thus, effectively limiting the extent of cellular damage to approximately one cell diameter. Therefore, the selective concentration of boron compounds within the tumour cells, followed by their capturing of thermal neutrons, should result in localised destruction of the malignant cells in the presence of the normal cells. Another possible medical application of polyhedral boron hydrides is radionuclide diagnostics and therapy of cancer, where these compounds can be used for attachment of radionuclide labels to various cancer-targeting biomolecules. Other fields of potential application of polyhedral boron hydrides and their metal complexes are synthesis of new materials (liquid crystals, NLO materials, magnets, semiconductors, etc.), radionuclide extraction from nuclear wastes, ion-selective electrodes, production of thermally stable polymers and high burning composite propellants, development of new catalysts for organic synthesis.
