Living with HIV/AIDS - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

The opening chapter of Living with HIV/AIDS: Challenges, Perspectives and Quality of Life is concerned with exploring the implications of living with invisible conditions in both social and professional networks, and how that may impact their overall health and wellbeing. The authors use empirical examples of people living with mental illness and people living with HIV/AIDS to examine how the level of their visible or invisible symptoms played out on their experience of living with such invisible conditions. The goal of the subsequent study is to explore the process of interviewing sero-discordant couples through a participatory action research methodology, as well as the outcome of science-in-action that was developed and formed into social capital by the community of couples living with HIV. The authors also present a theoretical taxonomy on the various themes of microaggressions that people living with HIV/AIDS encounter, including stigmatized language, desexualization and dating/sex-related microaggressions, dehumanization and second-class citizenship, pathology of HIV/AIDS, romanticizing of HIV/AIDS, and criminalization of HIV/AIDS. The final section of this compilation aims to determine the reflexivity of HIV/AIDS survivors and the strategies taken to maintain a good quality of life. The data was collected from information coming from Peer Support Group, People Affected by HIV/AIDS, health workers, Local AIDS Commission and NGOs caring about AIDS using observation, in-depth interview, and documentation methods.

Manual Sign Acquisition in Children with Developmental Disabilities - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Manual signs are used worldwide to support the communication and language development of children who have developmental disabilities. This book provides an overview of forty years of research and practice by recognised experts, from a developmental perspective. Uniquely, the book includes contributions on both sign languages and sign systems, linking the two fields of Deaf studies and Augmentative and Alternative Communication which have historically been seen as separate. This text is the most authoritative single text to date on the topic, providing an invaluable resource for speech pathologists, researchers, psychologists and educators. The main sections of the book include: the typical development of sign language and of gesture; literature reviews on sign acquisition in children with disabilities such as Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, Llandau Kleffner syndrome and deaf blindness. An important chapter deals with the latest research on sign language impairments in deaf children with developmental language difficulties, or autism spectrum disorders. The third section of the book addresses assessment and intervention, covering vocabulary, sign production difficulties and intelligibility, grammar and multi-signing, and pragmatics and discourse skills. The final two sections are concerned with use of signs in context: in the home, in school, and in different cultures. Throughout, care is taken to ensure that the voices of users are present and vivid, whether these be family members, teaching staff or the children themselves, with an entire chapter given over to an interview with a young adult's reflections on her use of sign since childhood. The book concludes with a call for a multimodal perspective on augmentative communication to be adopted in the future.

The current picture of long-term services and supports (LTSS) documented by families, policymakers, researchers, and service providers is complex, confusing, and frustrating. It is a ship struggling with the weight of escalating costs and an increasing number of passengers seeking access and safe passage. Services and supports are scattered throughout numerous federal programs, with uncertain points of entry and different rules of eligibility defined by geography, income level, age, and nature and type of disability. There is no comprehensive national policy focused on LTSS that is free from the medical model and institutional bias of long-term care (LTC). However, at the state and local levels, there is a push to move forward: setting new policies, reallocating resources, testing new service delivery approaches, and engaging individuals with disabilities and families in a public dialogue to redesign the ship to support a consumer-responsive system that encourages choices, seeks flexibility in service delivery, invests in public-private colLabouration, and values the role of formal and informal caregivers. None of the highlighted activities can offer a comprehensive roadmap to reform of existing systems. However, each highlighted state or local system focuses a spotlight on innovative thinking, including policies, processes, and methods of administration to help guide the redesign efforts for the future. This book identifies and highlights selected activities at the state and local levels that are leading toward increased access to LTSS with federal and state dollars. A growing number of states are re-evaluating their current systems to identify a range of options for consumers to remain in their own homes or communities rather than be forced into more restrictive environments and skilled nursing facilities. Researchers selected five states to profile and analysed current activities that are in different stages of development toward the goal of comprehensive, person-centred service and support programs.

Coping with Chronic Illness - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Coping with Chronic Illness - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

The opening chapter Coping with Chronic Illness takes into account the impact of the diagnosis on the family, both at the time of the communication of the diagnosis, and in the moment of chronicity, the relationships and of the social context, the coping strategies and the representation of the disease. Pain management is a growing concern in pediatric cancer patients as pain can originate from multiple sources and negatively influence long-term children well-being. To gain a better understanding of the pain adjustment processes occurring in young patients, the authors analyze a cohort of 30 children and early adolescents with acute leukemia or lymphoma facing cancer-related pain, focusing on the various coping strategies at different stages of therapy Additionally, the authors discuss strategies for encouraging family coping efforts and resilience. Future research needs to continue to focus on helping children cope with stress and worry related to their conditions and medical procedures. Following this, the collection reviews and analyzes the relationship among sociodemographic and clinical variables, psychological morbidity, self-efficacy for coping, illness perceptions and QoL according to disease stages. The penultimate chapter describes the experience of "continuous" management of adult diabetes at the ASST Spedali Civili of Brescia. Clinical work has confirmed that an integrated approach focused on the recognition of emotions and relational support is a fundamental element in the management of chronicity. The concluding paper explores options for chronic illness management in aged care facilities while highlighting the need for more effective illness prevention and positive lifestyle management programmes in the earlier years of life.

Syngas Generation from Hydrocarbons & Oxygenates with Structured Catalysts - L Bobrova - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Syngas generation by oxidative or steam reforming of hydrocarbons and oxygenates now attracts a lot of attention of researchers in the fields of heterogeneous catalysis and chemical engineering due to its tremendous importance for energy generation and synfuels production. This book reviews results of the long-term research of the international team of scientists aimed at development of efficient processes of syngas generation in structured catalytic reactors. Multiscale integrated optimisation approach is applied throughout of this work including design of nanocomposite active components stable to coking and sintering; developing heat-conducting monolithic substrates comprised of refractory alloys and cermets (honeycomb and microchannel structures, gauzes etc) and procedures of their loading with active components; design and manufacturing of several types of pilot-scale reactors (with the radial or the axial flow direction) equipped with unique liquid fuel evaporation and mixing units and internal heat exchangers. Extended tests of these reactors fed by fuels from C1 to gasoline, mineral and sunflower oil have been carried out with a broad variation of experimental parameters including stability tests up to 1000 h. Performance analysis has been made with a due regard for equilibrium restrictions on the operational parameters. Transient behaviour of the monolith reactor during start-up (ignition) of the methane partial oxidation to synthesis gas was studied and analysed via mathematical modelling based upon detailed elementary step mechanism. This provides required bases for theoretical optimisation of the catalyst bed configuration and process parameters.

Dietary Flavonoids Interfere with Cancer Radiotherapy - Katrin Sak - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Dietary Flavonoids Interfere with Cancer Radiotherapy - Katrin Sak - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

In parallel with the continuous rise of cancer incidence, efficient treatment becomes an increasingly important public health concern. Radiotherapy has remained one of the most important anticancer approaches for clinical management of a variety of human tumours, as at least half of all oncological patients receive this therapy at some stages of their disease. With the hope to attain greater anticancer response, the interest in using natural plant-derived products as complementary treatments to conventional radiotherapy has substantially increased in the recent years. However, the interactions between phytochemicals and ionizing radiation are not always known and can be often unpredictable. Therefore, in this book, the current findings about the combined treatments of malignant cells with radiation and flavonoids, the largest group of human dietary plant polyphenols, are described. These data show that under carefully chosen dosage-schedule regimens, certain flavonoids or their natural mixtures can behave as potent radiosensitizers, augmenting radiotherapeutic efficacy in different preclinical cancer models. Such radio-sensitising action of flavonoids can be achieved through modulation of the redox status and suppression of several cellular survival pathways activated by radiotherapy, ultimately leading to the death of malignant cells. As flavonoids can concurrently protect normal healthy cells from irradiation-induced injury and thereby minimize toxic adverse reactions, use of these plant-derived agents as complementary approach to radiotherapy might open new avenues for enhancement of clinical outcome. Therefore, combining conventional anticancer modalities with conscious intake of flavonoid supplements as adjuvant agents might be an important future strategy to boost the therapeutic success in the treatment of various human malignancies.
