The Caucasus and Iran - Khatuna Tabagari - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

The consumption of oil and gas increases annually. In 2019 the share of oil was 33.1% and that of gas a 24.2% in the entire world energy consumption. During the first period of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, oil markets crashed and oil prices were governed by the number of world infection cases; the more people were infected, the less the oil prices were. However, after April 2020 the usual peculiarities started to restore. It is forecasted that, at least until 2040, the share of hydrocarbons in world energy consumption will remain stable, if not increase. Energy security and energy policy of any developed country represents a key issue for sustainable development. Thus, countries with a lack of hydrocarbon resources search for ensured sources of oil and gas. From this point of view, the vulnerable situation is characteristic for the EU, the energy security of which is entirely determined by Russian gas supply. However, the Ukraine-Russia "gas wars" in 2006 and 2009 have demonstrated that energy supply schedules to Europe should be diversified. From this point of view, neither the Nord Stream Pipeline nor the Southern Gas Corridor will solve the problem, mainly due to the resource deficit in Azerbaijan. In-depth analysis of Iran's economy and political structure demonstrates that: (i) the country's welfare is entirely determined by oil exports; (ii) having the second world rank in gas reserves, Iran is exporting only an insignificant amount of gas; (iii) all attempts of President Rouhani to introduce free market relations in the country and to create hope for a better future failed due to U.S. sanctions; (iv) the latter resulted in just the opposite effect they aimed to achieve: they were unable to reduce oil exports from Iran to zero but, on the contrary, created the shadow oil exports totally controlled by the Revolutionary Guard Corp; (v) the sole possibility to provoke democratic development in Iran and to cancel financing of terroristic organizations via diminishing the role of ecclesiastic leaders is the involvement of the country in international energy transit projects governed by the rule of law. The energy transit projects are unfeasible without the involvement of Georgia, which will become the Eurasian energy hub. This book describes these projects in detail. Implementation of these projects will (i) diminish the role of Russia in the EU energy market; (ii) ensure stability in the South Caucasus region, and (iii) provoke democratic reforms in Iran and this way sustainably increase world stability and security.

Gas Closed System Cycles - Chih Wu - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Gas Closed System Cycles - Chih Wu - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Heat engines that use gases as the working fluid in a closed system model were discussed in this book. Otto cycle, Diesel, Miller, and Dual cycle are internal combustion engines. Stirling cycle is an external combustion engine. The Otto cycle is a spark-ignition reciprocating engine made of an isentropic compression process, a constant volume combustion process, an isentropic expansion process, and a constant volume cooling process. The thermal efficiency of the Otto cycle depends on its compression ratio. The compression ratio is defined as r=Vmax/Vmin. The Otto cycle efficiency is limited by the compression ratio because of the engine knock problem. The Diesel cycle is a compression-ignition reciprocating engine made of an isentropic compression process, a constant pressure combustion process, an isentropic expansion process, and a constant volume cooling process. The thermal efficiency of the Otto cycle depends on its compression ratio and cut-off ratio. The compression ratio is defined as r=Vmax/Vmin. The cut-off ratio is defined as rcutoff=Vcombustion off/Vmin. The Dual cycle involves two heat addition processes, one at constant volume and one at constant pressure. It behaves more like an actual cycle than either Otto or Diesel cycle. The Lenoir cycle was the first commercially successful internal combustion engine. The Stirling cycle and Wicks cycle are attempt to achieve the Carnot efficiency. The Miller cycle uses variable valve timing for compression ratio control to improve the performance of internal combustion engines.

Ozone is a harmful gas to people''s health even at low concentrations. Thus, it has attracted much interest to develop portable energy-saving high-resolution ozone sensors. In this book, the physical principle of photon stimulated ozone sensors based on indium oxide nanostructures has been investigated. Ozone sensors have been integrated with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and the sensor performance towards real applications has been tested. To examine the mechanisms of photon stimulation (photoreduction) and oxidation effects, electrical, surface analytical and structural characterisation of ozone sensing layers were performed and analysed. Moreover, optical fibre sensor has found applications in the biomedical research, industrial process control and environmental monitoring. This book provides a review of the optical fibre sensor, especially focused on the optical fibre sensor development and its application in gas detection. In addition, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a sensitive tool providing information on various physical and chemical properties of materials, as well as on interaction processes occurring in the bulk or at the surface of these materials. In this book, the use of impedimetric transducers based on interdigitated electrode arrays (IDEA) for chemical and bio-sensors development is reviewed. Different designs of IDEA devices are presented and the effect of the transducer geometry on resulting impedance spectra is discussed. The authors also examine the development of an amperometric biosensor for phenol detection. The variables that exert influence on the performance of the biosensor response, including enzyme immobilisation procedure, laccase amounts, pH and working potential were investigated as well. Furthermore, the feasibility of the biosensor response for various phenol compounds was also investigated. Recent advances in sensor technology, signal processing and pattern recognition algorithms have led to the development of chemical sensing instruments housing one or more non-specific gas sensors. This book also reviews the recent applications of non-specific gas sensor array technologies used for environmental monitoring of odours; including a brief history on odour measurement applications; the different types of sensors utilised in gas sensor array systems and a range of pattern recognition techniques, from simple statistical analyses to artificial neural networks, used for the purpose of odour identification and quantification is also discussed.
