Iona Burnell Reilly presents a collection of autoethnographies, written by working class academics in higher education – how they got there, what their journeys were like, what their experiences were, if they faced any struggles, conflicts, prejudice and discrimination, and if they had to, or still do, negotiate their identities. Told in their own words the academics chart their journeys and explore their experiences of becoming an academic while also coming from a working class background. Although a working class heritage under-pins the autoethnography of each of the writers, the interlocking sections between class, race, gender and sexuality will also be relevant.

Acknowledging the institutional challenges that hinder the work and careers of working-class academics (WCAs), The Intersections of a Working-Class Academic Identity recognises the adverse impacts of the overrepresentation of scholars from privileged classes, including a lack of cultural wealth in teaching and research, as well as the discouragement of talented working-class individuals who might otherwise pursue prolific academic careers. Looking beyond individual struggles, author Teresa Crew presents an informed, alternative perspective to the prevailing viewpoints in research on working-class individuals in higher education, analysing statistical data and consolidating the systemic challenges encountered by WCAs within a framework of classism. The construction of the Crossrail project began at North Dock in Canary Wharf in May 2009. At the height of construction it was the biggest railway construction project in Europe and is one of the largest single infrastructure investments undertaken in the UK. It consists of 21 km of new twin-bore tunnels under central London and 10 new world-class stations across one of the largest cities in the world. Crossrail Project: Infrastructure Design and Construction Volume 6 contains a collection of 22 papers submitted to the 2021 Crossrail’s Technical Papers Competition. Contributions have come from members of the Crossrail organisation, its consultants as well as contractors involved in design and construction across the Crossrail project. The papers cover a multitude of disciplines including tunnelling, geotechnical engineering, rail signalling and control, rail systems & integration, rail telecommunications, and electrical engineering. As part of the enduring legacy of the Crossrail project, it is incumbent upon the organisation to share its experiences and best practices with the rest of the industry, to showcase the skills of the personnel involved and the successful delivery of each phase of works.
