Klagt, Kinder, Cöthen Funeral Music, BWV 244a : Cöthen Funeral Music, BWV 244a

The so-called Köthener Trauermusik (Cöthen Funeral Music) was performed at the memorial service for Prince Leopold of Anhalt Cöthen on 24 March 1729. The history of reconstruction begins in the second half of thenineteenth century. In 1873 Wilhelm Rust, co-editor of the first Complete Bach Edition and subsequently Thomaskantor, established the fundamental relationship between the Köthener Trauermusik on the one hand andthe St. Matthew Passion and Trauerode BWV 198 on the other. In the service of concert practice, it is the intention of this attempted reconstruction to enrich the repertoire of church music for Passiontide and the period aroundtheSunday before Advent, on which the dead are commemorated. It is also hoped that it will contribute to the understanding of Bach‘s “Great Passion”, whose sister work the Köthener Trauermusik is.

Jubilate Deo

This setting was commissioned early in 2023 for the Choir of the Chapels Royal, H.M. Tower of London, as part of a service celebrating the Coronation of H.M. King Charles III. It was first performed by the Choir of the Chapels Royal conducted by its Director of Music, Colm Carey, with Christian Wilson, organist. On the day following the Coronation, the filmed service was broadcast online throughout the Commonwealth. My brief was to create something which, while outgoing and energetic, could be prepared by a professional choir in relatively short rehearsal time, therefore lending itself to regular subsequent performance at Matins services. The music offsets its simple 3/4 time signature with intermittent dancing cross-rhythms in 6/8. In the interests of brevity, most of it is chorally homophonic, moving verbally and rhythmically in lockstep and only occasionally diversifying into brief flurries of imitative counterpoint. I was, however, encouraged by Colm Carey to write with an organist of international virtuoso standing in mind. The result represents the best accommodation I could make between Christian Wilsonʼs brilliance and that aforementioned hope of regular performances. Francis Pott, 2024

St. Mark Passion BWV247 : A complete reconstruction based on the 1731 and 1744 versions of the text

In its various reconstructed and completed version, Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Mark Passion BWV 247 occupies a fixed place in the pre-Easter concert repertoire. As the third of what wereoriginally five Passions, not only was it the latest to be written, it is also the most enigmatic of the known Good Friday works composed by the Kantor of the Thomasschule. The fundamental approach behind the presentversion of the St. Mark Passion is to attempt to get as close as possible stylistically to the performed versions of 1731 and 1744. It is hoped that in the service of church music practice, thiscompletereconstruction will thus help to transform the third of Bach’s Passion works into a stylistically unified whole.

42 Studies or Caprices

Well known for his style of bowing, his splendid tone and the clearness of his execution, French violinist, teacher and composer Rodolphe Kreutzer (1766-1831) composed nineteen Violin concertos and forty operas duringhis life time, and is perhaps best known for his 42 Études or Capriccios, 1796. Born in Versailles, Kreutzer was initially taught by his German father, who was a musician in the royalchapel, with later lessons from Anton Stamitz. He quickly rose to fame as a Violinist, appearing as a soloist until 1810. In 1798, when at Vienna in the service of the French ambassador, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte (later KingofSweden and Norway), Kreutzer the made the aquaintance of Beethoven and became the dedicatee of his Violin Sonata No. 9, Op. 47 (1803). Kreutzer, however, never played the work, declaring it unplayable andincomprehensible. From 1795 until 1826 Kreutzer taught at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he became co-author of the Conservatoire's Violin method with Pierre Rode and Pierre Baillot. He was also leader of theParis Opera for a time. This volume contains Kreutzer's 42 Études, which are, to this day, considered fundamental studies for student Violinists.
