Tundragobelin for clarinet, violin, cello and pi

The title refers to image-patterns of summer flowers and vegetation of the Northern Canadian tundra when viewed from a low-flying aircraft. Some characteristic titles among the eleven movements include two fast yet softly scurrying Notturnos, a Funeral-banal, a Gigue, a Metagigue, a Sarabande and even a Gigue-bande!

Duets for treble recorders : from the Children's and Female Choruses

The Children’s and Female Choruses were composed in a single burst of creative activity at the zenith of Bartók’s career, in the summer of 1935, between such masterpieces as the String Quartet No. 5 and the Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta. These short choral pieces are based on folk texts that Bartók further polished and stylized. The music, however, is wholly the composer’s own, although it frequently includes motifs, rhythmic formulas and line structures reminiscent of Hungarian folk songs. Both editions contain nine of the two-part pieces of the set, transcribed idiomatically but faithfully for descant and treble recorders, respectively.

Fiatal asszonyok éneke : Young Wive's Song

The Young Wives' Song, written in 1925 by Attila Jozsef (1905-1937) is a poem I found accidentally in the summer of 2010. It struck me on reading it that it can have two different meanings: a positive and a tragic resonance. By employing different singing techniques, I compiled and set to music the lines of verse, so that sometimes one meaning, sometimes the other comes to the fore. I was just 20 when I wrote the piece, just as Attila Jozsef was when he wrote the poem.(Mate Balogh).The full duration of the song is approximately 5 minutes. It was premiered by Boglárka Terray on 2 October 2010, in Budapest.

Two Children's Songs

József Karai (1927-2013) studied composition under Ferenc Farkas and János Viski, and studied conducting under János Ferencsik, András Kórodi, and László Somogyi. His oeuvre includes instrumental works, songs and cantatas, but he became best known for his choral works. This is certainly conditioned by his professional career between 1948 and 1969 he conducted several choirs in Budapest. His works have been published in several countries. His composition entitled Two Children's Songs was written in 1956-1957 with text from the poems by Sándor Weöres (Spring Greeting, Summer Evening), and it was first published in April 1961 by the Hungarian State Music Publisher. This three-partwork is recommended for more advanced ensembles.

Marche Funebre

'The Marche funebre is a piano transcription of the concluding part of the symphonic poem Kossuth composed in summer 1903. The snappy rhythmic motif of the dramatic introduction bore the inscription 'Danger threatens the fatherland' in the score. After it, we hear the tragic funeral-verbunk form of the Kossuth theme, over a heroic ostinato accompaniment reminiscent of late Liszt. Contrasting with this, there follows an exciting sequential treatment of the 'valiant heroes' theme, and this peters out to the Hungarian-style runs that had previously appeared in the 'Danger threatens the fatherland' motivic group. Finally, during the resigned conclusion of the piece (X.'A hopeless silence reigns'), the Kossuth theme disintegrates into its various motifs, as if 'dying'.' Chamber Music for/ Kammermusik für Violoncelli 14 : for 3 violoncellos

This volume contains romantic works arranged for three cellos. The 'Ungarische Melodie' and 'Ungarischer Marsch' were originally piano pieces. Their composer, Franz Schubert, in the summer of 1824 was music teacher to Count Esterházy's family in Zseliz on the Garam. Here from a peasant girl he heard the Hungarian songs that he incorporated in these two works. From Brahms's series of '16 Walzer', Op.39, likewise written for piano, the arranger of the volume paired together two pieces in a ternary form. Debussy's well-known work 'The little Nigar' with its syncopated rhythm evokes the black folk music of New Orleans. The less well-known 'Gavotte' by Dvo ák was originallywritten for three violins. The pieces in the volume provide parts of varying degrees of difficulty for the three cellos, so that less experienced players can also take part in the shared musicmaking.

Jam Quartet : for Flute, 3 Triangles, piano and Cello

Jam Quartet was written in the summer of 2016.The macroform and declamation of the piece are reflected to improvising jazz-musicians, however it remains a reflection instead of imitation of the so-called jam session. Every musician is equally able to represent both the melodical and accompagnement-like musical materials, even the triangle-player has its own solo. The piece was dedicated to the THReNSeMBle. It was premiered by that ensemble on 16 November 2016 in Budapest at the closing concert of the international masterclass for composers led by Toshio Hosokawa and Péter Eötvös. The composition was awarded a special price by the GENERACE competition in Ostrava. MátéBalogh (born 1990) studied with Zoltán Jeney at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, and later he attended the master classes of Fabio Nieder, Péter Eötvös, Christian Wolff, and Louis Andriessen. His compositions have featured in the programs of prestigious festivals (ManiFeste - IRCAM, Paris Milano Musica, ECSA - Bruxelles Kurtág & Ungarn - Bern Café Budapest). In 2013 he was one of the winners of the chamber opera workshop organized by the Peter Eötvös Contemporary Music Foundation and, in addition, has been awarded prizes by the European Composer and Songwriter Alliance, the Fondazione Spinola Banna per l Arte, and the New Hungarian Musical Forum.
