He recounts these bands’ importance for him and other Latinx kids and discusses their frequent identification with these bands’ glamorous performance of difference. Whether it was Siouxsie Sioux drawing inspiration from Latinx contemporaries and cultural practices or how Soft Cell singer Marc Almond’s lyrics were attuned to the vibrancy of queer Latinidad, Rodríguez shows how Latinx culture helped shape British post-punk. He traces the fandom networks that link these groups across space and time to illuminate how popular music establishes and facilitates intimate relations across the Atlantic. In so doing, he demonstrates how the music and styles that have come to define the 1980s hold significant sway over younger generations equally enthused by their matchlessly pleasurable and political reverberations.

Although Vallée and other crooners reflected the gender fluidity of late-1920s popular culture, their challenge to the Depression era''s more conservative masculine norms led cultural authorities to stigmatize them as gender and sexual deviants. In Real Men Don''t Sing Allison McCracken outlines crooning''s history from its origins in minstrelsy through its development as the microphone sound most associated with white recording artists, band singers, and radio stars. She charts early crooners’ rise and fall between 1925 and 1934, contrasting Rudy Vallée with Bing Crosby to demonstrate how attempts to contain crooners created and dictated standards of white masculinity for male singers. Unlike Vallée, Crosby survived the crooner backlash by adapting his voice and persona to adhere to white middle-class masculine norms. The effects of these norms are felt to this day, as critics continue to question the masculinity of youthful, romantic white male singers. After punk’s arrival in 1976, many art students in the northern English city of Leeds traded their paintbrushes for guitars and synthesizers. In bands ranging from Gang of Four, Soft Cell, and Delta 5 to the Mekons, Scritti Politti, and Fad Gadget, these artists-turned-musicians challenged the limits of what was deemed possible in rock and pop music. Maine is known for its rockbound coast and pristine shoreline. Yet there is more to this shore than rocky cliffs. This book describes the origin of the more common "soft coast" of eroding bluffs, sand beaches, and salt marshes. A central theme is the formation of the present shoreline during the current ongoing rise in sea level and the ways in which coastal residents can best cope with the changes to come. Although it is not widely known, Maine is experiencing a rapid, uneven drowning of its shore at the same time that coastal development is at an all-time high. The authors explain how the shoreline is changing and provide a series of highly detailed maps that show the relative safety of particular locations on the coast. Specific guidelines for recognizing various safe and unsafe coastal settings are presented, as are recommendations for sound construction techniques in hazardous coastal areas. Photographs and drawings illustrate the danger of living too near the shoreline, and an up-to-date review of Maine''s regulations governing coastal construction is simply and readably described. A bibliography of important coastal literature is also included, as well as a guide to federal, state, and local sources of information.

Leonid Tishkov has been an important figure on the contemporary Moscow arts scene for the past twenty years. Creatures brings Tishkov’s surreal universe to an American audience for the first time. Published in conjunction with an exhibition "Dabloids and Elephants" that originated at the Duke University Museum of Art and that will travel internationally throughout 1994, the book features brilliant color images of the artist’s drawings, paintings, soft sculpture, books, and prints, as well as a play. The work in Creatures is centered on the imaginative and playful idea of the Dabloids, foot-shaped creatures of all sizes and colors who emerge magically from the Dablus, a sausage-like object that appears one misty morning in the fields of a collective farm. Tishkov’s drawings, paintings, and sculptures recount the history of the Dablus and the Dabloids. These mystical creatures are at once pets and gods, beings immensely wise and yet foolish. They are surreal manifestations of the artistic consciousness even as they are symbols of human isolation. In this sense, Tishkov’s roots in surrealism are charged with humorous social commentary often reminiscent of Hogarth, Red Grooms, and Robert Crumb. Tishkov explores other mythological and absurdist themes in a series of elephant watercolors in which people live within an elephant trunk. The book also features a translation of the text of Tishkov’s play "Dabloids—A Fantasy," as well as brief essays that provide an introduction to the artist and his work, his mythology, and his roots in Russian folk culture. Creatures introduces a major contemporary Russian artist to the western world. It should delight all who enter its world and should expand the horizons of all who delight in its artistic merits.

In her pioneering book Hard Core, Linda Williams put moving-image pornography on the map of contemporary scholarship with her analysis of the most popular and enduring of all film and video genres. Now, fifteen years later, she showcases the next generation of critical thinking about pornography and signals new directions for study and teaching. Porn Studies resists the tendency to situate pornography as the outer limit of what can be studied and discussed. With revenues totaling between ten and fourteen billion dollars annually—more than the combined revenues of professional football, basketball, and baseball—visual, hard-core pornography is a central feature of American popular culture. It is time, Williams contends, for scholars to recognize this and give pornography a serious and extended analysis. The essays in this volume move beyond feminist debates and distinctions between a “good” erotica and a “bad” hard core. Contributors examine varieties of pornography from the tradition of the soft-core pin-up through the contemporary hard-core tradition of straight, gay, and lesbian videos and dvds to the burgeoning phenomenon of pornography on the Internet. They explore, as examples of the genre, individual works as divergent as The Starr Report, the pirated Tommy Lee/Pamela Anderson honeymoon video, and explicit Japanese “ladies’ comics” consumed by women.
