The Last Rose of Summer is a popular Irish folksong. The original text was written by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) and the melody is a traditional air titled The Groves of Blarney. The German composer Friedrich von Flotow (1812-1883) cleverly used this song in his opera Martha, a light-hearted, successful work that is still regularly performed. The melancholy character of The Last Rose of Summer still appeals to many people in the present day and this arrangement by Wil van der Beek certainly does justice to the beauty of the melody. This piece was composed in the summer of 2000, on commission of the Whightull Wind Ensemble. Seaside Road is a march in two-four time. The work begins with a tempestuous sound, followed by a light passage. Featuring, amongst others, your Bass Clarinet and Euphonium soloists in the trio section, the work builds towards an agile tutti before concluding with a powerful closing section. A must for all your summer season concerts.

The Hida High School is in a highland city called Takayama in Gifu Prefecture. Takayama City has some of the highest mountains in Japan, atmospheric rows of houses and streets, and a beautiful landscape. The magnificent views from these mountains can be described as a paradise above the clouds. When the composer visited there in the summer of 2001, the lovely flowers spreading through the valley and the refreshing air welcomed him. The flowers looked as if they were fashionably dressed and fully enjoying conversation and a short summer at a reunion party. The composer was inspired by this scenery to compose this piece. The musical party opens with happy greetings of a reunion andjoyful themes follow one after another. A light xylophone solo, a waltz and an adagio featuring alternate solos by alto saxophone, euphonium and trumpet lead to a brilliant finale featuring brass and percussion played in irregular time. A beautiful musical picture that your band will enjoy performing for many years.

Soon everything flowers lushly, and the music swells into the full sounding energy of summer, bringing the work to a brilliant and dynamic close. A great work for any time of year.

Studio-Pop consists of five movements. The firstmovement, entitled Marching on a String, is anenergetic rock march in a modern rhythm. Next,the charming Dreaming of Summer has beencomposed in three-four time - which is quiteunusual in modern pop music. The inspiration forthe third movement, Chicken-Charley was a youngman selling chicken legs from a stall. His supple,dancing movements can be recognised in the music.The fourth movement, Candlelight is a modern,attractive ballad. Finally, Discoteca takes us along ona night visit to a Spanish discotheque. The typicallySpanish chords and the stirring, high-spirited rhythmprovide an exuberant closing to Studio-Pop.
