British Railways Freight Terminals Since 1960 - Paul Shannon - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Arguably, since the 1920s but markedly since the 1960s, the railways have been fighting a losing battle with the road transport to retain their share of freight traffic. Gone are the days when almost every British passenger station had its own goods yard, handling all kinds of freight in wagonload quantities for distribution in the local area. That network of general freight terminals was gradually reduced and, eventually, eliminated, as the railway lost out to its main competitor, the lorry, with British Rail effectively throwing in the towel in relation to wagonload traffic with the demise of the Speedlink network in the 1990s. At the same time, rail freight has developed new markets for heavy trainload operations. That growth has led to the setting up of specialised terminals for aggregates, cement, steel, deep-sea containers and other bulk cargoes. The move from traditional wagonload traffic to lengthy and heavy block trains conveying only type of freight has been fully accomplished. This book illustrates and describes the huge transition that has taken place across the British railway network over the last 60 years in relation to the handling of goods traffic. It provides views of long-forgotten operations forming a stark contrast with the streamlined facilities of today. The book also looks at the range of traction and rolling-stock which was used to handle the nation''s railway freight traffic over the decades ranging from steam-hauled pick-up goods trains to today''s uniform loads of 2,000 tonnes and more.

Military Jeep - Pat Ware - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The Jeep is among a handful of motor vehicles, along with other classics such as the VW ''Beetle'', the Mini, the E-Type Jaguar and the Citroën 2CV which are deserving of that over used adjective; iconic.During WW2, the Jeep could be found wherever the Allies were fighting and soldiers soon learned that here was a dependable, go-anywhere machine. Waterproofed Jeeps took part in the D-Day landings, before fighting their way across France and the Low Countries and into Germany. In the appalling conditions of the Eastern Front, Jeeps struggled against the odds to win the admiration of the Red Army and in the Far East where roads were non-existent, Jeeps were even adapted to travel on rails. By the time the war was over, more than 640,000 Jeeps had been built by Ford and Willys. After the end of the war another 28,000 were built in France by Hotchkiss during the 1950s.This book, now enlarged and revised with many new pictures covers the story of the development of this iconic military vehicle and the myriad post-war ''lookalikes''. It also provides insights into what is involved in finding, restoring and running a military Jeep more than 80 years since the first prototype was delivered to the US Army in July 1940. It is a reliable guide to help enthusiasts find parts and decide how a particular Jeep can be authentically restored. The book''s author, Pat Ware, is amongst the world''s foremost writers on historical military vehicles, with more than 60 titles and countless magazine articles on his credits.

British Rail Departmental Locomotives 1948-68 - Shirley Smith - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

British Rail Departmental Locomotives 1948-68 - Shirley Smith - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

This significant new book provides a single reference work to all the departmental locomotives - steam, diesel, electric and battery - both standard and narrow gauge operated by BR from 1948 to the end of steam in 1968.Although the railways employed the vast bulk of their locomotive stock on commercial passenger and freight traffic, many also employed a number for departmental duties. These may have been narrow gauge, for example, for use in the major workshops such as Crewe and Horwich or withdrawn ex-main-line locomotives that eked out their final day or months in a secondary duty at a locomotive shed. At Nationalisation in 1948 BR inherited a number of these departmental locomotives from the ''Big Four'' companies and, over the next 20 years, a number of further steam and other locomotives were transferred to departmental duties, including a significant number used as stationary boilers. The transfer of locomotives from capital to departmental stock did not cease with the end of steam and examples of diesel and electric locomotives being renumbered into the departmental series continued effectively until the end of BR in the early 1990s. The book includes information about the locations at which the locomotives worked and provides full details of each individual locomotive''s record in departmental service. The book is illustrated throughout with Ordnance Survey maps and photographs of the locomotives and locations.

Soviet and Russian Special Mission Aircraft - Yefim (author) Gordon - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Soviet and Russian Special Mission Aircraft - Yefim (author) Gordon - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

In the years after the Second World War, aircraft optimised for various kinds of special missions began assuming ever-greater importance in the inventories of the world''s leading air forces. The Soviet Union was no exception - numerous special mission versions of Soviet military fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters were developed and fielded, and the process is continuing in modern Russia. Some of them have seen action in various armed conflicts, including the Afghan War, the Chechen Wars and, most recently, the Syrian War.The need to control friendly forces on the move and manage airborne air defence assets efficiently resulted in the development of airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft. The first of these in the Soviet inventory was the early 1960s vintage Tupolev Tu-126 which was replaced in the 1980s by the Ilyushin/Beriyev A-50. The latter has been constantly upgraded but is now due for replacement by the latest A-100.An equally important role is filled by airborne command posts - mostly based on airliners, including the Ilyushin Il-22 army-level ABCP, the Tu-214PU and the Il-80 national emergency airborne command post (the Russian equivalent of the Boeing E-4 ''doomsday aircraft''). The latter may be replaced by a specialised derivative of the Il-96-400 airliner. Rotary-wing aircraft in this class were also developed, such as the Mil'' Mi-8VzPU and Mi-6VKP/Mi-22.Another important class is reconnaissance aircraft of various categories - photo reconnaissance, electronic intelligence, nuclear/biological/chemical reconnaissance, radiation intelligence (RINT). These were represented by ELINT versions of bombers (including the Tu-22 and Tu-22M), airliners and transports (ELINT versions of the Antonov An-12 and An-26 transports, the Il-20 derivative of the Il-18 airliner), RINT versions of the An-12 and the An-24 airliner etc.A separate chapter covers electronic countermeasures aircraft, such as specialised versions of the Tu-16 and Tu-22 bombers and An-12 transport, the latest Il-22PP, the Army Aviation''s many ECM versions of the Mi-8 helicopter (including the latest Mi-8MTPR) and the heavy Mi-10PP.A singularly important class is in-flight refuelling tankers supporting the operations of both heavy aircraft (notably strategic bombers) and tactical jets. These include tanker versions of the Tupolev Tu-16 and Myasishchev M-4/3MS series bombers and the Il-78, including the latest Il-78M-90.Another category which assumed considerable importance is search and rescue aircraft, such as the naval An-12PS equipped to carry a paradroppable lifeboat and the latest Beriyev Be-200PS amphibian able to pick up survivors at the scene of a maritime disaster. The book is illustrated with numerous previously unpublished photos, line drawings and many colour side views.

Robinson Eight-coupled Locomotives - Jeremy (author) Clements - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Robinson Eight-coupled Locomotives - Jeremy (author) Clements - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Starting in 1902 with three 0-8-0s for the Great Central Railway, J G Robinson''s heavy freight locomotive fleet grew rapidly as part of General Manager Sam Fay''s strategy to rescue the company from financial difficulties. At Grouping, the GCR passed on 241 well-built, powerful and efficient eight-coupled locomotives to the newly formed London & North Eastern Railway. In a parallel development, the Robinson 2-8-0 was adopted in 1917 as a standard type for the Railway Operating Division of the Royal Engineers. More than 500 were constructed by several manufacturers, over 300 being sent across the Channel to support the British forces in France. Their later story included short-term loans to nine railway companies, sales to four UK companies and operators in China and Australia. In 1941, 92 were requisitioned for military service in the Middle East for deployment in Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq and in 1952 five more were sent to Egypt. This work surveys a large, complex locomotive family that saw service on four continents between 1902 and the early 1970s. It covers the signature 2-8-0s, the original 0-8-0s, the unusual 0-8-4Ts, the 2-8-2T derivatives, Fay''s exploration of ten-coupled power, the sad story of the ''might-have-been'' Garratt, plus the various modifications and rebuildings instituted by Gresley and Thompson.Related TitlesBR Steam Locomotives Complete Allocations History 1948-19689781910809723 £35.00The Class 33s9781910809662 £25.00The LMS Turbomotive9781909328525 £27.95

Junkers Ju 88 Volume 3 - Martin Streetly - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Junkers Ju 88 Volume 3 - Martin Streetly - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Beyond its famed role as the Luftwaffe''s long-serving Schnellbomber (fast bomber), this book tells the story of the Junkers Ju 88 as a day- and nightfighter. In addition to the aircraft''s development for such roles, the authors offer an analysis of the engines, weaponry and sophisticated electronics and radar equipment carried by the Ju 88, including its airborne radars, passive homers, navigation aids, radios, and IFF sets. The Ju 88 C Zerstörer (''Destroyer'') heavy fighter, saw early operations in Poland with KG 30 and from 1942, as the C-6 with V./KG 40 and I. and III./ZG 1, operating over the Bay of Biscay. Armed with three 7.9 mm MG 17s and a single 20 mm MG FF cannon, these aircraft ranged off the west coast of France engaging aircraft of the RAF and USAAF, as well as harassing enemy shipping and offering air cover for German U-boats.From the summer of 1942, Ju 88 C-4s, R-1s and Gs equipped many of the Luftwaffe''s Nachtjagdgruppen. These were fitted with state-of-the art radar and weaponry, and waged a bitter war against RAF Bomber Command which saw the introduction of the Himmelbett, Wilde Sau and Zahme Sau methods of nightfighting as well as ground radars and communications systems used to create an advanced aerial defence control network. Also covered are the operations conducted by Ju 88 day fighters in the Mediterranean, the lesser-known ''train-busters'' and nightfighters deployed on the Eastern Front, and also an examination of the camouflage and markings applied to the various Ju 88 fighters. With an authoritative text by recognised Luftwaffe historians, accompanied by hundreds of rare photographs, plus specially commissioned colour artwork and maps, this book provides an essential and comprehensive overview of the technology of the Ju 88 fighter variants and detailed coverage of their performance as combat aircraft.

Aeronautical Knowledge Meteorology - Jeremy M Pratt - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Aeronautical Knowledge Meteorology - Jeremy M Pratt - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Many pilots consider Meteorology to be one of the most interesting, and sometimes most baffling, of the theoretical subjects they have to learn. Too often, aviation meteorology has been taught in a largely academic sense, with a heavy emphasis on physics and theory, with little attention given to the practical aspects of the weather as it relates to pilots. This shortcoming was addressed in the 2015 Private Pilot Licence (PPL) and Light Aircraft Pilot Licence (LAPL) courses, produced by a team of experienced flying instructors and examiners put together by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). This syllabus brings PPL and LAPL training in-line with the modern training environment. In particular, the new training courses are focused on providing up-to-date and practical aeronautical knowledge, rather than requiring the pilot to rote learn largely academic and irrelevant material with little application to ''real world'' flying.Aeronautical Knowledge, Meteorology is part of a new series of aviation training manuals, designed from the beginning to take full advantage of this new methodology in aviation training. It provides a deeper understanding of aviation weather and approaches the subject of meteorology on a ''step-by-step'' basis, from a starting point assuming no prior knowledge of the subject, through to a comprehensive coverage of practical aviation meteorology for Visual Flight Rules (VFR) flight. Written by a current Flight Instructor and established author of over 25 training manuals, who was closely involved in the creation of the new PPL and LAPL training syllabi, this series is now delivering the real-word aeronautical knowledge that today''s pilots need - not just to pass the relevant exams, but also to operate safely and proficiently in the modern aviation environment.
