Warlock An Old Song For Small Orchestra F/S

An Old Song is an atmospheric piece based on a lowland Scottish folk song. Composed in 1917, it is one of the earliest works of the English composer Peter Warlock (1894-1930), who also achieved fame for his scandalous lifestyle. Scored for a Small Orchestra, it is rarely performed nowadays. Warlock was an ardent admirer of Delius throughout his career, and his influences are plain to see here – some wit was known to call it “On Hearing the Second Cuckoo in Spring”. Nonetheless, this work is often seen to mark the start of the composer's independent creative process, and as such requires great musical sensitivity when performed.

Lord Berners: Three Small Funeral Marches

These three piano pieces, entitled respectively For a Statesman, For a Canary, For a Rich Aunt, are probably the best-known of all Berners' early works, though usually more through their reputation than through the music. They were the first of his published music to be publicly performed - by Casella in March 1917 - and were first published in Italy, as well as being used in a variety of contexts later. Although the pieces are dissonant, they use extensions of a tonal musical language: at the climax of the first piece, the music is suddenly given a key-signature of E flat minor, and a short sequence form the last piece was used by Casella as an illustration in his book on the evolution of the perfect cadence. They use the same kinds of ostinato effects and have a similarly extreme dynamic range.

Joseph Horovitz (b. 1926) is a British composer and conductor, who is best known for his involvement the 1951 Festival of Britain, and for works such as Captain Noah and His Floating Zoo . His Concertante (1948) was his first published composition, written while he was still studying under Gordon Jacob at the RCM. It was modelled on the Weber’s Concertino for Clarinet , but is written in a decidedly 20th century idiom. Originally scored for Clarinet and String Quartet, this version for Clarinet and Piano was transcribed by the composer.

Peter Maxwell Davies: Three Studies For Percussion (Score)

This is effectively a work in three movements - Allegro, Andante cantabile and Presto - which Davies likens to 'three obstacle courses, bristling with technical difficulties'. However, as he goes on to say, 'young people are naturally gifted with extraordinary rhythmic skills which normally remain untapped'. Given the opportunity, older children have here the material for a highly arresting piece of music-making. Scoring also includes a small wood block, a small temple block and a small suspended cymbal. The xylophones are one each of the following: concert, soprano, alto and bass. The two glockenspiels are soprano and alto and the metallophones are bass and deep bass (a vibraphone may be used instead of the latter). These studies will provide a challenge to all percussionists, for whom there is a distinct shortage of suitable studies. Duration c. 5mins.

Walk Softly is a light floating piece with a colourful 'modal' harmonic structure. The feel throughout is in a light, loose Latin style. Edited by Scott Stroman. Jazzamatazz is an exciting series of easier music for Big Band. The instrumentation is for orthodox Big Band with optional flute/clarinet and percussion. There are several helpful features included such as optional octave doublings, practical instrument ranges and suggested chord voicings in keyboard and percussion parts. The very comprehensive performance notes are invaluable at the rehearsal stage. None of the compositions in this series are difficult to play (around Grades 3/4) and all sound impressive when performed. An excellent choice for bands in both schools and colleges. Each set contains a full score plus the following parts: 5 Saxes (2 alto, 2 tenor, 1 baritone), 4 Trumpets, 4 Trombones (Bass clef), Optional Flute & Clarinet, Guitar, Keyboard, Bass, Drums, Additional Percussion.
