10 - Geoff (programmer At Large For Bfi Southbank) Andrew - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

The Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami burst onto the international film scene in the early 1990s and was widely regarded as one of the most distinctive and talented modern-day directors. His major features - including Through the Olive Trees (1994), Taste of Cherry (1997) and The Wind Will Carry Us (1999) - are relatively modest in scale, contemplative and humanist in tone. In 2002, with 10, Kiarostami broke new ground, fixing one or two digital cameras on a car''s dashboard to film ten conversations between the driver (Mania Akbari) and her various passengers. The results are astonishing: though formally rigorous, even austere, and documentary-like in its style, 10 succeeds both as emotionally affecting human drama and as a critical analysis of everyday life in modern Tehran. In his study of the film, Geoff Andrew considers 10 within the context of Kiarostami''s career, of Iranian cinema''s renaissance, and of international film culture. Drawing on a number of detailed interviews he conducted with both Kiarostami and his lead actress, Andrew sheds light on the unusual methods used in making the film, on its political relevance, and on its remarkably subtle aesthetic. He also argues that 10 was an important turning-point in the career of a film-maker who was not only one of contemporary cinema''s most accomplished practitioners but also one of its most radical experimentalists.

Developments in Russian Politics 10 - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Developments in Russian Politics 10 - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine presents a major challenge for Russian studies. It has demonstrated the imperative to search for better ways to understand Russia. At the same time, the war has spotlighted Russian imperial ambitions and colonial attitudes toward countries around it and ethnic minorities within it, raising uncomfortable questions about whether our own views of these countries and peoples reflect this biased Russian gaze. Understanding Russia is more important than ever and diverse perspectives are needed. With a stronger focus on informal institutions, marginalised voices and “de-centering” of Russian studies, Developments in Russian Politics 10 brings together a diverse author team to offer fresh viewpoints on a rapidly evolving subject. Discussing established topics such as executive leadership, parties and elections as well as newer issues of national identity, protest, and Russia and Greater Eurasia, this new edition analyses the political system in which Putin’s influence can be understood and covers frequently overlooked topics like the informal economy and climate change. Breaking with the tradition of organizing Russian Politics around formal institutions and instead emphasising the societal factors and informal structures and processes that underpin support for Russia’s political regime, this new edition offers:- Topical and theoretically informed coverage of major issues from top scholars- Analysis of how Russia’s past influences its contemporary politics in counterintuitive ways- Dedicated chapters on the Russia-Ukraine war, Russian Foreign Policy and Chechnya - Chapters on all of the key topics covered by typical courses on Russian politics, including protest movement and civil society, and gender. The politics of any country, especially Russia at this moment in time, are volatile. Developments in Russian Politics 10 provides readers with a conceptual toolkit for understanding the dynamism of Russian politics, whatever the future may bring.

The Story of Life in 10½ Chapters - Marianne Taylor - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

The Story of Life in 10½ Chapters - Marianne Taylor - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

An exploration of the key aspects of life on Earth – now and in the future – through the study of 10 and a half species. ''Entertaining and intellectually stimulating... The book highlights the wonderfully interconnected nature of our fragile planet. If you want big science at an accessible scale, this is for you'' BBC Wildlife If an alien visitor were to collect ten souvenir life forms to represent life on earth, which would they be? This is the thought-provoking premise of Marianne Taylor''s The Story of Life in 10½ Chapters . Each life form explains a key aspect about life on Earth. From the sponge that seems to be a plant but is really an animal to the almost extinct soft-shelled turtle deemed extremely unique and therefore extremely precious, these examples reveal how life itself is arranged across time and space, and how humanity increasingly dominates that vision.Taylor, a prolific science writer, considers the chemistry of a green plant and ponders the possibility of life beyond our world. She investigates the virus in an attempt to determine what a life form is; and wonders if the human – ''a distinct and very dominant species with an inevitably biased view of life'' – could evolve in a new direction. She tells us that the giraffe was one species, but is now four; that the dusky seaside sparrow may be revived through ''re-evolution'', or cloning; explains the significance of Darwin''s finch to evolution; and much more. The ''half'' species is artificial intelligence. Itself an experiment to understand and model life, AI is central to our future – although from the alien visitor''s standpoint, unlikely to inherit the earth in the long run.

Bond Plays: 10 - Edward Bond - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Bond Plays: 10 - Edward Bond - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Bond Plays: 10 brings together recent work by the writer of the classic stage plays Saved , Lear, The Pope''s Wedding and Early Morning . The volume comprises four previously unpublished plays, one previously published play and a comprehensive introduction by the author. Dea , a heroine, has committed a terrible act and has been exiled. When she meets someone from her past, she is forcefully confronted by the broken society that drove her to commit her crimes. In this play, Edward Bond takes from the Greek and Jacobean drama the fundamental classical problems of the family and war to vividly picture our collapsing society. Dea received its premiere at Sutton Theatre in 2016. The Testament of this Day is Edward Bond''s third original radio drama. A young man embarks on two journeys, though he is in control of only one. He soon discovers there is no going back, from either. The play is an arresting drama about the world today and was first produced by BBC Radio 4 in 2016. The Price of One is set in among city ruins in a war zone. An occupying soldier carries a baby he has rescued from the rubble and dust. He meets a woman carrying a baby of her own. What ensues is a struggle between two enemies demanding justice in the midst of war. A modern tragedy, this play is an exploration of eternity and madness and the supermarket culture. It received its premiere in 2016. The Angry Roads considers how young people today grow up in a world that their parents never knew. In a flat a teenage boy is sorting through play things from his childhood; he is sorting through his past in search of the truth about an accident that destroyed his family. The Angry Roads was commissioned by Big Brum Theatre Company and premiered in 2015. The Hungry Bowl is a portrait of a a ghost town. Outside a harsh wind rattles the windows. Inside, people go hungry and start boarding up their homes. When a young girl insists on feeding her imaginary friend, a bitter struggle for a future ensues for the power of the imagination to transform lives. The play is a moving and audacious modern fable that explores the impact of hard times on family life, commissioned by Big Brum and premiered in 2012.The volume features an introduction by the author that looks at theatre and culture in a post-Brexit referendum, post-truth and post-Trump era.

10 Marchfield Square - Nicola Whyte - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

‘Cosy and classy in equal measure’ JANICE HALLETT‘Beautifully unguessable ... bursting with life ... brilliant!’ ALEX HAY The Maid meets Only Murders in the Building in this twist-packed cosy mystery set in the smallest residential square in London. Marchfield Square was meant to be a haven from the outside world. A place for those who need somewhere safe from their pasts, or who could otherwise not afford to stay in the city they call home. That was Celeste Van Duren''s plan. One of her tenants being murdered in his own kitchen, and the police trying to pin it on his long-suffering wife, was not.So Celeste does what anyone with a lot of money, a strong sense of justice and a bad hip would do: she recruits some help to track down the real murderer. Her cleaner, Audrey, knows everyone in the square and is liked by all, while failed crime writer, Lewis, is known by no one. He hates his job, hates his life, and he’s not that fond of Audrey either, but Celeste is persuasive. In theory his knowledge of police procedure and her way with people should help them find the killer - if they don''t kill each other first...Despite their differences the two soon discover the victim’s dodgy art deals may hold the key to the mystery – but have they missed something closer to home? After all, how well do you really know your neighbours? The perfect summer read for fans of Tom Hindle, Janice Hallett and Kristen Perrin. ‘A hugely impressive debut that’s cosy and classy in equal measure. F3D/EF-10 Skyknight Units of the Korean and Vietnam Wars - Joe Copalman - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

F3D/EF-10 Skyknight Units of the Korean and Vietnam Wars - Joe Copalman - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

The Douglas F3D Skyknight was an early but effective attempt at combining new technologies together in a lethal package capable of shipboard operation. Whereas most fighters relied on speed and maneuverability, the portly, straight-winged F3D relied on three radars, four 20mm cannon, and – most importantly – darkness. Having first flown in March 1948, the Skyknight’s first taste of war came in September 1952, when Marine Night Fighter Squadron 513 [VMF(N)-513] deployed to Korea. The most important job assigned to VMF(N)-513 was the escorting of USAF B-29 bombers over northern Korea. Whereas Chinese and North Korean MiG-15s relied on ground-controlled intercept radar for steering guidance into firing positions, the F3D, with its own onboard radars, was autonomously lethal – it could detect, track and target MiGs all on its own. Skyknight crews ended the Korean War with six nocturnal kills in exchange for one combat loss. After the war, 35 Skyknights were converted into electronic warfare (EW) aircraft. As US air operations over North Vietnam intensified in early 1965, the need for a tactical EW jet to provide electronic countermeasures (ECM) protection to accompany strike packages north became apparent. For all of its early effectiveness over North Vietnam, the proliferation of radar-guided guns and missiles began to erode the advantage created by EF-10 escort support, which flew its last combat mission in October 1969.This highly illustrated volume explores the F3D Skynights and their deployment during the Korean and Vietnam wars, using first-hand accounts from aircrew, original photographs and 30 profile artworks to explore their key roles as an escort aircraft and electronic warfare aircraft.
