Encountering Europe on British Stages - Marilena Zaroulia - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Forty years after Britain's entry to the European Economic Community, the country's political and cultural landscapes are still marked by scepticism or resistance to 'continental' Europe. Encountering Europe on British Stages is the first book-length study of the ways in which British theatre and performance have engaged with Europe and European identities since the end of the Cold War. The book explores images and ideas of Europe and Europeanness as produced on British stages and studies the reactions to works that have negotiated Europe, its past and present, its peoples and their experiences. It also investigates the determining effects of British and European cultural policies and structures. What can we learn from the British performing arts scene of the last quarter-century about what Europe, as a cultural construct and political formation, means for Britain today? It considers the work of dramatists and theatre companies which engaged with the emerging reality of the 'New' Europe in the 1990s: including Howard Barker, Howard Brenton, Caryl Churchill, David Edgar, David Greig, Sarah Kane, Harold Pinter and companies Complicite and Suspect Culture. Against a changing context that covers the narratives of expansion and utopian feelings at the turn of the millennium; the ‘failure’ of multiculturalism; the transformations precipitated by the global recession in 2008 and the ‘Eurozone crisis’; the migration crisis and the referendum on Britain’s European Union membership, the work of playwrights including Mark Ravenhill, Simon Stephens, Zinnie Harris, Tena Štivicic, Caire Bayley and Anders Lustgarten is examined.

The Future of Europe - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

This open access book takes the current state of the Union seriously. The European Union is at a crossroads. Slowly recovering from a series of financial and economic crises, with trust fundamentally shaken by processes of disaggregation and increasingly nationalist politics, it is searching for new visions that are at once inspiring and workable. In its White Paper of 1 March 2017, the Commission proposed five non-exclusive options for the Future of Europe. As put by the Commission, the five scenarios are illustrative in nature to provoke thinking. They are not detailed blueprints or policy prescriptions. Likewise, they deliberately make no mention of legal or institutional processes – the form will follow the function. This book aims to debate not only the political vision of Europe, but also the issue of legal integration beyond Brexit. Apart from addressing the institutional challenges for the EU, the contributions to this volume focus on two key areas: rule of law and security. Rule of law and security are not only paradigmatic for the future of Europe but are also closely connected to a particular vision of Europe based on ‘integration through law’; a vision that has been strongly contested in recent years. The overarching question is: how can sustainable political and legal integration be achieved in Europe? The volume builds on a conference organised by the Swedish Network for European Legal Studies in November 2017 and includes chapters by leading scholars in the field from the Nordic countries and wider Europe. The eBook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by the Swedish Studies Network.

A History of Eastern Europe 1918 to the Present - Ian D. (history Instructor Armour - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Why is Eastern Europe still different from Western Europe, nearly a quarter-century after the collapse of Communism? It is the premise of A History of Eastern Europe 1918 to the Present that the answer to this question can only be found in Eastern Europe''s tortured twentieth-century history. Eastern Europe emerged in 1918 as the ''lands between'', new states whose weakness vis-à-vis Germany and Soviet Russia soon became obvious. The region was the main killing-field of the Second World War, which visited unimaginable horrors on its inhabitants before their ''liberation'' by the Soviets in 1945. The imposition of Communist dictatorships on the region, ironically, only deepened Eastern Europe''s backwardness. Even in the post-Communist period, its problems continue to make it a fertile breeding-ground for nationalism and political extremism. A History of Eastern Europe 1918 to the Present explores the comparative backwardness of Eastern Europe and how this has driven strategies of modernisation; it looks at the ways in which the region has served as a giant test-tube for political experimentation and, in particular, at the enduring strength of nationalism, which since 1989 has re-emerged more virulent than ever. Complete with a useful chronology, maps and a helpful glossary, this book in the essential textbook for any student of twentieth-century Eastern Europe.

Race in Post-racial Europe - Stefanie C. Boulila - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Europe is witnessing a new era of racial denial. After decades of anti-racialism, post-feminism and the recognition of some queer lives, the language of equality and diversity suggests that Europe has not only overcome racism but also sexism and homophobia. Racist violence in the wake of the ''refugee crisis'', Brexit as well as the force of the extreme Right have been blamed on ''too much diversity'' and ''false tolerance'' by European leaders and commentators alike. The reiteration that racialized Others are a danger to European liberal gains has become a ''common-sense'' claim in the call for the securitization of the European borders and ''tougher rules'' for immigrants and served as the basis for the call to end multiculturalismRace in Post-racial Europe offers an analysis of the intersectional logics of post-racial formations in Europe. With the increasing significance of gender and sexual norms in debates around migration, post-racial formations have yet to be studied in conjunction with the liberal articulation of Europe as post-feminist and post-homophobic. Whether in the campaign for the minaret ban in Switzerland, in Dutch gay rights discourses or in the aftermath of the Cologne events, the New Right has successfully joined forced with some feminist and LGBT voices in the claim that women and queers need to be protected from migrants. In Europe, where race is deeply intertwined with notions of modernity, gender and sexuality have proven particularly relevant sites of racialisation.
