Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) and Alaskan Air Command (AAC) were Major Commands of the United States Air Force. Pacific Air Forces controlled units stationed in Hawaii, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines. PACAF was responsible for an area of over 100 million square miles; its forces primarily faced the threats posed by the Soviet Union, the People’s Republic of China and North Korea. Alaskan Air Command was responsible for providing air-defence forces, which were operationally tasked by North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), as well as other tactical units stationed within the state of Alaska. Military Airlift Command (MAC) was a United States Air Force Major Command, responsible for strategic and tactical airlift, primarily operating C-130, C-141 and C-5 transports. MAC also provided presidential and VIP transportation. MAC was organized into two geographically aligned Numbered Air Forces: 21st Air Force controlled units stationed east of the Mississippi, including those in Europe, while 22nd Air Force controlled those stationed to the west, including those in the Pacific. MAC also controlled the Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Service and the Air Weather Service. Following the failed attempt to rescue American hostages in Iran during Operation Eagle Claw, USAF special operations units were reorganized. Consequently, during 1983 United States Air Force special operations units, hitherto split between Tactical Air Command, United States Air Forces in Europe and Pacific Air Forces, were consolidated under MAC in the newly established 23nd Air Force. The Air Force Reserve was the federally organised reserve component of the United States Air Force. AFRES was organised into three Numbered Air Forces: 4th Air Force and 14th Air Force controlled units that would have been gained by Military Airlift Command if mobilised, while 10th Air Force controlled units that would have been gained by Tactical Air Command and Strategic Air Command. Consequently, AFRES operated a highly diverse fleet of aircraft types, from the AC-130 Spectre and HH-3E Jolly Green Giant, through the F-4 Phantom II and A-10 Thunderbolt II, to the KC-135 Stratotanker, C-130 Hercules and C-5 Galaxy. AFRES had traditionally been the recipient of older hand-me-down equipment. Tactical Air Command, based in the United States itself, held the majority of the USAF’s tactical air power. On the first night of the Second World War the Royal Air Force flew a mission to drop more than five million leaflets over the industrial heartland of Germany. The leaflets called upon the German people to throw out the Nazis and make peace. This was the beginning of what aircrew would know as ‘Nickel’ operations, the dropping of propaganda leaflets across Germany and Occupied Europe.These early leaflets were crude in design and naive in content but as the war progressed they developed into a sophisticated psychological warfare campaign. Germans were shown the futility of their war; they could never overwhelm the combined might of the Allies. Enemy soldiers were persuaded to surrender or desert, and the people of occupied countries were given messages of hope and a spirit of resistance was instilled.Over time the quality of the leaflets improved. They were printed in full colour and richly illustrated with photographs, maps, diagrams and cartoons. The leaflets were supplemented with miniature newspapers, pamphlets and sheets of stickers. The occupied countries also received air-dropped gifts of teabags, packs of cigarettes and sweets. Even German civilians received presents of forged ration coupons courtesy of the Royal Air Force. While the Allied air forces attacked from above with ‘paper bullets’, resistance fighters covertly distributed propaganda on ground attempting to subvert occupying German troops.

She remembers fondly the kindness of these women, as well as her other experiences as an evacuee: a new school, nits, chickens, gravy, and her first trip to the seaside.
