Lost Nottingham - Joseph Earp - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Lost Nottingham - Joseph Earp - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The city of Nottingham has been an important centre of trade and industry in the East Midlands since the Middle Ages. Famous particularly for lace-making, centred on the preserved Lace Market area, it was also home to the household names of Boots the chemists and Raleigh bicycles. Since the Norman period the layout of Nottingham and its streets remained virtually the same until the mid-twentieth century. In the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, Nottingham began to see many historic quarters of the city disappear. Large areas were demolished; centuries-old streets disappeared, particularly around the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre where numerous ancient caves under buildings were also destroyed; and famous old buildings such as the Black Boy hotel, Holy Trinity Church and Victoria train station fell victim to the bulldozers. This book sets out to explore what has been lost in the city over the years through photographs, slides, postcards, documents and illustrations from the Paul Nix Collection, the Nottingham Hidden History Team archive and the author’s own photographs.Lost Nottingham presents a portrait of a city and a way of life that has radically changed or disappeared today, often in the name of progress and development, showing not just the industries and buildings that have gone, people and street scenes, but also many popular places of entertainment and much more. This fascinating photographic history of lost Nottingham will appeal to all those who live in the city or know it well, as well as those who remember it from previous decades.

Secret Truro - Christine Parnell - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Secret Truro - Christine Parnell - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Truro has been an important port since the Middle Ages, and its status as a stannary town, allowing it to assay and stamp copper and tin from Cornish mines, also brought prosperity to the town. Wealthy families settled in Truro, benefitting from mining and other industries such as iron-smelting, potteries and tanneries and the town was given city status by Queen Victoria and the foundations laid for a new cathedral. Today it is the administrative and commercial centre for Cornwall. This book explores Truro’s history, including personalities such as Richard Lander, the explorer, and his contemporaries in the cultural hotbed of eighteenth-and nineteenth-century Truro. The Assembly Rooms which once stood in High Cross welcomed Sarah Siddons, General Tom Thumb and regular local entertainer Joseph Emidy who was once a slave. The Truro River has stories to tell, as do the cathedral, churches and chapels, and there are tales of law and order in the city, fires and other emergencies. The authors take the reader down the ‘opes’, alleys and lanes to reveal interesting anecdotes about musical events, clubs and societies, monuments and plaques, gravestones under the pavement and the 106 public houses that once served Truro. With tales of remarkable characters, unusual events and tucked-away or disappeared historical buildings and locations, Secret Truro will appeal to all those with an interest in the history of this fascinating city in Cornwall.

Forgotten Generals - Dorian Bond - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Forgotten Generals - Dorian Bond - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The answer to the question posed on the left is Belisarius, who became known to history as ''the last of the Romans''. But how many can honestly say they know much about this man, who, as well as being the victor at the Battle of Dara that brought peace to Persia, suppressed an uprising at the hippodrome in Constantinople by massacring 30,000? The same can be said of Albrecht von Wallenstein, Supreme Commander of the Habsburg Armies during the bloody Thirty Years War - the first ''World War''; and Maurice de Saxe, Marshal of France, one of the most successful Generals of the 18th century. Author Dorian Bond''s meticulous selection of military leaders reveals what it is to be a General - and how circumstance can write even the greatest out of history. Count Suvarov, the last Generalissimus of the Russian Empire, never lost a battle. Ennobled by both Catherine the Great and the Emperor Joseph II and undoubtedly one of the greatest commanders in history, he was exiled, recalled to fight the French revolutionary forces in Italy to great effect, but died forgotten in St Petersburg in 1800.What did General Sir Richard O''Connor do in the Second World War? He took Tobruk and half of Libya, capturing 100,000 prisoners, 400 tanks and 1,000 guns. So why is he nowhere near as famous as Montgomery? The author answers this and many other questions about leadership and fame in these dozen portraits gleaned from primary sources.

Scarborough in 50 Buildings - Mike Smith - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Scarborough in 50 Buildings - Mike Smith - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

From its origins as a fishing town, Scarborough has become the largest holiday resort on the North Yorkshire coast. In this book, author Mike Smith highlights fifty of Scarborough’s architectural landmarks and notable structures, old and new. Through a fascinating and diverse selection of buildings he charts the development and changing face of the town.Scarborough’s two magnificent bays are separated by a headland bearing the remains of a Roman signal station and the gaunt ruins of a twelfth-century castle, the two oldest buildings featured in this book. The town’s spa buildings are a legacy of the discovery, in 1626, of health-giving springs that prompted the conversion of Scarborough into Britain’s first seaside resort. The Rotunda, conceived in 1829 by William ‘Strata’ Smith, the ‘Father of English Geology’, was one of the world’s first purpose-built museums, and when the Grand Hotel opened in 1867 it was Europe’s largest purpose-built hotel. Other buildings are included for their cultural associations with people such as the Sitwell family, while St Mary’s Church is the final resting place of Anne Brontë. Bringing this engaging architectural portrait of Scarborough right up to the present century, the author also highlights stylish seafront apartments and the Stephen Joseph Theatre, which is wrapped in the skin of a former art deco cinema.Illustrated throughout, Scarborough in 50 Buildings will be of interest to residents, visitors and all those with links to this favourite British holiday resort.
